Major Fate Cycles govern the fluctuations of fortune over ten-year periods 🌊, while Minor Fate Cycles dominate the auspiciousness or misfortune of a single year ⏳. The establishment of Minor Fate Cycles precisely aims to compensate for the shortcomings of Major Fate Cycles. The ancients stipulated: for males, the Minor Fate Cycle begins from Bingyin and proceeds in forward order; for females, it begins from Renshen and proceeds in reverse order. This rule is immutable. The explanation is: males belong to Yang Fire 🔥, with primordial energy starting from Wuzi, passing through thirty years to Dingsi, and reaching Bingyin in the tenth month (symbolizing Wood generating Fire 🌱→🔥); females belong to Yin Water 💧, with primordial energy starting from Gengzi, passing through twenty years to Xinsi, and reaching Renshen in the tenth month (symbolizing Metal generating Water ⚪→💧). This is a numerical principle.
Zui Xingzi proposed a new viewpoint: Minor Fate Cycles should be calculated from the hour of birth, with forward or reverse progression determined by the Yin-Yang attribute of the Year Pillar. For example: a male born in a Yang Year and Yang hour (e.g., Jiazi hour) begins the Yichou cycle immediately at birth, enters the Bingyin cycle at age two, changing cycles yearly in a recurring pattern; one born in a Yin Year and Yang hour proceeds in reverse order. This method has proven quite accurate through verification, but assessing fortune requires comprehensive judgment combining Major Fate Cycles, the Useful God of the Eight Characters, and the strength of the Day Master. Before children enter their Major Fate Cycle, the Minor Fate Cycle is the primary basis for judgment; if the cycle reaches positions of Death, Exhaustion, or flourishing Sha (negative energy), crises are inevitable. One must first analyze the prosperity/decline and favorable/unfavorable elements of the Eight Characters, then reference the Minor Fate Cycle to make precise predictions.
Today, many fortune-tellers neglect Minor Fate Cycles, which is a significant error! Even if the Major Fate Cycle is auspicious, obstruction in the Minor Fate Cycle can still hinder smooth progress; if the Major Fate Cycle is inauspicious, an auspicious Minor Fate Cycle can mitigate the crisis. The Minor Fate Cycle is also known as the "Yearly Progression," and its importance should not be overlooked.
| Traditional Concept | Contemporary Significance |
|---|---|
| Minor Cycle changes yearly | Short-term trend indicator (e.g., reference for annual plan adjustments) |
| Positions of Death/Exhaustion/Sha flourishing | Periods of low energy / high-risk phases |
| Combined with Eight Characters' favorable/unfavorable elements | Requires alignment with analysis of personal strengths and weaknesses |
"Major Fate Cycles are like major rivers, Minor Fate Cycles are like tributaries."
The fate analysis system, through the nesting of Major and Minor Cycles, reveals the dialectical relationship between long-term trends and short-term fluctuations in destiny. Contemporaries can understand it as: while grasping the general direction (Major Cycles), one needs to flexibly adjust strategies according to annual variables (Minor Cycles). This embodies the wisdom of "acting in harmony with the times" from the I Ching.
⚠️ Scientific Caution: The auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of Minor Fate Cycles should be viewed rationally. They can serve as risk indicators but cannot replace professional judgments in medicine, law, etc.
