If the Four Pillars of the Bazi originally lack Wealth Stars, Official Stars, or Seal Stars, but there are earthly branch combinations that can "break out" Official Stars—for example, the Gui-Mao (癸卯) day pillar can break out the Ji Earth (己土) from the Wu (午) as an Official Star 🌱; the Gui-You (癸酉) day pillar can break out the Wu Earth (戊土) from the Chen (辰) as an Official Star ⛰; the Jia-Wu (甲午) day pillar can break out the Xin Metal (辛金) from the You (酉) as an Official Star ⚔️. In this case, there must be a character in the pillars that can form a Three Harmony combination to lock in this noble energy, making it a marvelous configuration. The Treatise on Fundamental Principles points out: Combinations like Mao breaking Wu and Wu breaking You can bring the dual blessings of Wealth Stars and Official Stars 💰⚔️. It also states: When the earthly branches of the Year Pillar and Day Pillar lack breaking-to-obtain-official combinations, but the earthly branches of the Month Pillar and Hour Pillar have breaking-to-obtain-official and combining-with-official combinations, the individual often attains wealth and prominence. For example, the Jia-Yin (甲寅) day pillar itself has no breaking to obtain an official, but if the Month Pillar encounters Bing-Wu (丙午) 🔥 and the Hour Pillar is Ji-Si (己巳) 🌋, here, Wu breaks the Xin Metal Official Star from You, which is then combined by Si; simultaneously, the Bing Fire and Wu Earth within Si can also combine with Xin Metal, thus forming a noble pattern. A supplementary verse adds: Mao breaking Wu may not necessarily lead to high official positions 🌱🔥, and Wu breaking You or Wei should be viewed similarly 🔥⚔️; Chou breaking Si or Wu are not standard examples 🐄🌋, while Zi breaking Mao or Chen are easier to apply 💧🌳.
Core Concept 💡
The essence of "breaking to obtain an official" lies in using the "breaking/harming" relationships between earthly branches (e.g., Mao breaks Wu) to draw out hidden Official Stars (representing career, authority). This requires a Three Harmony combination (e.g., Si-You-Chou forming a Metal combination) to "combine and lock in" this noble energy, preventing its dissipation. This embodies the wisdom of "creating something from nothing" in destiny analysis—transforming potential opportunities into advantages when resources seem scarce.
Modern Interpretation 🌟
In contemporary workplaces and society, this is equivalent to identifying and activating "hidden resources." For instance, when an individual's Four Pillars lack direct Official Stars, using earthly branch breaking (e.g., Mao Wood breaking Wu Fire) symbolizes uncovering hidden talent (like the Official Star within Wu Fire), then combining it with a Three Harmony (like cooperation, team integration) for stability and enhancement. The modern context emphasizes:

Philosophical Reflection 🤔
This reveals the dialectic between destiny and autonomy: "Breaking to obtain an official" symbolizes "opportunity," but it requires human effort to "combine and lock it in" to manifest, echoing the concept of "favorable timing, geographical advantage, and human harmony." The deeper contemplation lies in the idea that life's shortcomings (lacking Wealth, Official, or Seal Stars) are not endpoints but starting points for transformation, encouraging innovation within limitations rather than blind faith in fate.

Modern Research
Contemporary scholars like Li Juming, in Modern Destiny Analysis, empirically analyze: Cases of "breaking to obtain an official" show high verification rates among people in transition periods (e.g., mid-life entrepreneurs). It is suggested to combine data tools (e.g., Bazi apps) to simulate the effects of "breaking and combining," emphasizing logical verification over blind belief.
