Yang Blade represents the "Yang" within Yin and Yang, symbolizing the sharpness and danger of a blade's edge. It refers to the position immediately preceding the Heavenly Stem's (Day Master's) Lu (Prosperity) position. It is considered extremely inauspicious due to excessive prosperity crossing a boundary. For example, for a Day Master of Jia Wood (甲), encountering Mao Wood (卯) (which contains Yi Wood 乙) is considered a Yang Blade. Yi Wood, acting as Jia's "younger brother," will plunder its wealth 💰, clash with the Xin Metal (辛) Official Star hidden within You (酉), and combine away the Geng Metal (庚) spouse star (Geng is Jia's Seven Killings). The combination of Rob Wealth, Clash Official, and Combine Killing leads to great misfortune. Only the five Yang Heavenly Stems (Jia 甲, Bing 丙, Wu 戊, Geng 庚, Ren 壬) have a Yang Blade. The five Yin Heavenly Stems (Yi 乙, Ding 丁, Ji 己, Xin 辛, Gui 癸) do not have a Blade, hence the name "Yang Blade." However, when a Yin Stem encounters its Hurting Officer, the resulting calamity is similar. For instance, Yi (乙) encountering Bing (丙) is also considered a Blade, as Bing (Hurting Officer) harms the Geng (庚) Official, combines with the Xin (辛) Killing, and overcomes Yi Wood, with inauspiciousness equal to a Yang Blade. Yang Blades are divided into three categories:
The Xiji Pian (Essays on Auspicious and Inauspicious) points out: The Rob Wealth Yang Blade is most feared when appearing in the Hour Pillar; when the Annual and Luck Pillars coincide with it (Bing Lin), disaster strikes immediately. A Yang Blade in the Hour Pillar is more severe than in the Year, Month, or Day Pillars. For example, a person born on a Jia day with Yi Mao (乙卯) in the Hour Pillar (True Blade) already indicates a destiny prone to injuring the wife and breaking wealth. If the Annual/Luck Pillars encounter the Yang Blade again (Bing Lin), misfortune is compounded. If encountering Si-You (巳酉) clashing with the Year Lord (Tai Sui), or Hai-Wei-Xu (亥未戌) combining with the Year Lord, the Yang Blade (evil spirit) and the Year Lord (inauspicious god) superimpose, making calamity unavoidable 🔥. However, if the Day Master has a deep foundation (e.g., Day Master is strong, or has Tianyue Virtue or Pardon Star), disasters can be mitigated. If the Day Pillar originally has a Blade, and the Annual/Luck Pillars clash or combine with it again, it is extremely inauspicious; if the Annual/Luck Pillars only unilaterally clash or combine, the misfortune is halved. When the Day Master is weak and lacks Qi, encountering a Yang Blade can conversely be auspicious, as the Yang Blade can share the pressure from wealth and killing stars, similar to brothers helping 🤝. A weak body favors the Yang Blade supporting wealth/killing, while a strong body dislikes it plundering. Those with a Yang Blade pattern often have large eyes, yellow-ish beard, a rigid and ruthless nature, lacking compassion; they are prone to chronic illnesses, overcoming the father and harming the wife; if combined with Three Penalties or Kui Gang, they may rise to prominence in border regions 🌄, but if encountering flourishing wealth or full penalties/harms, it becomes inauspicious.
The Yang Blade pattern generally dislikes entering the "wealth territory" and fears being "stirred" by clash, for example:
The wealth that the Yang Blade dislikes is mostly "clashing wealth" (e.g., Wu-Wu 戊午 Blade seeing Zi 子 wealth). However, Jia-Mao (甲卯) Blade does not dislike Wu-Ji-Si-Wu (戊己巳午) wealth, but dislikes You (酉) official; Bing-Wu (丙午) Blade does not dislike Geng-Xin-Shen-You (庚辛申酉) wealth, but dislikes Zi (子) official. If wealth gives birth to the Official Star which serves as the Useful God, then wealth is favored 💰. The Xin Jing states: "Heavy Yang Blades meeting wealth again, riches and honor come with gold and silk," confirming this principle. For Jia (甲), taking Ji (己) as wife, if the pillars see Mao (卯) or Yi (乙), the Ji Earth is injured, indicating overcoming the wife; but encountering Geng (庚) or Xin (辛) can control the Yi (乙) killing, turning bad to good. For the six Jia days, encountering Yi Mao (乙卯) is inauspicious, Xin Mao (辛卯) is auspicious; Jia Shen (甲申) Ding Mao (丁卯) is not a Blade (Shen contains Geng which combines with Yi as wealth), but Ding Fire Hurting Officer and Yi Wood robbing wealth means Annual/Luck Bing Lin is still inauspicious. Other non-Blade day pillars, like Yi You (乙酉) seeing Geng Chen (庚辰) in the hour, etc., without penalties or clashes, indicate a good fate.
The Yang Blade is an inauspicious star and evil spirit 🌪️. It favors Partial Official (Seven Killings) and Seal Ribbon to control/transform it. It dislikes Fan Yin (reverse吟), Fu Yin (hidden吟), Kui Gang, and Three Combinations. The Yang Blade and Seven Killings control each other, e.g., "Killing without Blade is not prominent, Blade without Killing is not powerful." Having both Blade and Killing brings nobility. A fate carrying Killing and Blade, encountering them in Annual/Luck brings fortune; lacking Killing and Blade but encountering Blade luck leads to overcoming the wife or disputing wealth. Day Blades only occur on three days: Wu Wu (戊午), Bing Wu (丙午), Ren Zi (壬子). For men, it obstructs the wife; for women, it obstructs the husband. It requires the Seven Killings to control it, and then entering Official/Seal territory makes for a good fate. Yang Blade in the Year Pillar is most severe (breaks ancestral foundation), next in the Hour Pillar (overcomes wife and children), slightly lighter in the Month Pillar. For men, Rob Wealth plus Hurting Officer inevitably overcomes the wife; for women, it overcomes the husband. The Xiang Xin Fu describes those with Rob Wealth Yang Blade as outwardly modest but inwardly vicious; the Xin Jing says heavy Yang Blades meeting Killing brings great honor; the Qian Li Ma points out that controlled Killing and Blade can wield military authority ⚔️. However, excessive Yang Blades mainly indicate disability, blindness, or deafness, as in example fates like Gui You (癸酉), Wu Wu (戊午), Wu Yin (戊寅), Gui Chou (癸丑), etc., which are all blind.
Ancient songs emphasize: Yang Blade in the Hour favors Partial Official, dislikes Wealth Stars; Blade and Killing controlling each other can ensure auspiciousness and prosperity, but dislikes penalties/clashes and flourishing wealth; a weak body encountering the Blade can conversely form an extraordinary pattern.
Example 1: Ren Shen (壬申), Ren Zi (壬子), Wu Wu (戊午), Yi Mao (乙卯). Self-sitting on Wu Fire Yang Blade 🔥, two Ren and Shen-Zi combination makes wealth flourishing 🌊. The Zi-Wu clash is resolved by the Shen-Zi combination. The Hour Pillar Yi Mao (乙卯) Official Star controls the Blade, forming a Wealth-Official pattern and achieving great honor.
Example 2: Bing Xu (丙戌), Gui Si (癸巳), Wu Wu (戊午), Ding Si (丁巳). Wu returns to prosperity at Si (巳). Wu, although a Yang Blade, obtains prosperity. The Seal Ribbon transforms the Blade, leading to honor.
Other examples of blindness due to Yang Blade:
Gui You (癸酉), Wu Wu (戊午), Wu Yin (戊寅), Gui Chou (癸丑)
Bing Yin (丙寅), Geng Yin (庚寅), Bing Wu (丙午), Yi Wei (乙未)
Ding Mao (丁卯), Gui Mao (癸卯), Jia Zi (甲子), Yi Hai (乙亥)
Yang Blade symbolizes extreme prosperity of the Five Elements leading to danger. Its essence is Rob Wealth and Seize Official, governing inauspiciousness and calamity 🌪️. The core lies in "balance and control": the Yang Blade requires the Seven Killings or Seal Ribbon to restrain it to turn auspicious, embodying the philosophy of "evil spirits controlling each other" for balance. Those with a Yang Blade pattern have a rigid and ruthless nature, reflecting a deep connection between personality and destiny, as ancient texts say "large eyes, yellow-ish beard, no heart of compassion." In classification, the Rob Wealth Blade, Protect Prosperity Blade, and Turn Back on Prosperity Blade correspond to different pattern needs, highlighting the wisdom of "guiding according to the situation."
In contemporary society, Yang Blade can be interpreted as extreme personality or high-risk traits:
Yang Blade reveals the cosmic principle of excess leading to reversal: extreme prosperity inevitably turns, requiring "evil spirits controlling each other" to achieve order. From a modern perspective, this is not fatalism but a metaphor for dynamic balance – human nature's rigidity and softness need harmonizing, societal strength and weakness need mutual support. Ancient texts' assertions of "overcoming wife and breaking wealth" should be reinterpreted under egalitarian values as "relational tension," encouraging communication rather than passive resignation to fate.
