Flatland Wood symbolizes a newly sprouted sapling 🌱, just emerging with tender buds and extending its branches. It most needs the nourishment of rain and dew 🌧️ to grow, but dislikes the accumulation of frost and snow, as this represents the abundant timber on the ground, often used as pillars and beams for building houses. The Wu Xu day pillar is like the main pillar of a house, while the Ji Hai day pillar resembles a crossbeam; the combination of the two is ideal. It must be rooted in earth, with Roadside Earth being the best choice, forming a standard pattern; if it also encounters Zi or Wu (symbolizing pillars of heaven and earth), it becomes even more noble. House Roof Earth, Wall Earth, and City Wall Earth can all nourish this wood, and if there is transformation or elevation in between, it is especially auspicious 🌬️; however, Sand Earth and Great Station Earth are useless, and if they appear in the day or hour pillar, they may even bring misfortune. Sun Fire and Thunderbolt Fire 🔥 can make it illustrious and radiant; Stove Fire meeting Water brings blessings; Lamp Fire is stable without wind; other types of Fire 🔥 are dangerous without Water to balance them. This is already mature wood and should not be damaged by Sword Tip Metal; if there is other wood to assist, it may still be acceptable. Lake Gold can enhance its brilliance, and if the heavenly stems are harmonious, the earthly branches are prosperous, and there is additional earth as a foundation, it indicates great nobility. Other types of Metal are useless. Regarding Water, the moisture of Heavenly River Water 🌊 brings auspiciousness; Stream Water and Sea Water are dangerous without mountain formations to support them; Well Spring Water and Gully Water are auspicious, but when Jia Shen combines with Ding Chou to form a mountain formation, it is even more favorable. Encountering Great Forest Wood 🌳 may shorten lifespan due to wind shaking; among Mulberry Wood, Gui Chou is the most auspicious; those born on Ren Zi or Ji Hai days may achieve nobility upon encountering it, but those born on Wu Xu days should avoid it; Pine and Cypress Wood 🌲 leaning on flatland can become pillars and beams, and with the help of earth, it indicates nobility. In summary, this wood dislikes Metal and favors Water and Earth 🌊⛰️. If born in the cold winter season and obtaining Yin or Mao (symbolizing the return of spring to a cold valley), it is also considered a noble pattern.
The essence of Flatland Wood is growth and balance: it represents potential in the early stages, emphasizing that nourishment from the external environment (such as rain, dew, water, and earth) is more important than internal strength. Among the Five Elements, it favors Water and Earth 🌊⛰️ and dislikes Metal, reflecting the wisdom of "going with the flow"—relying on favorable factors (such as an earth foundation, and the harmony of water and fire) while avoiding destructive forces (such as frost, snow, and the destructive nature of Metal). This mirrors the concept of "pattern construction" in destiny analysis, which optimizes life's direction through the combination of elements.
In contemporary society, this can be understood as personal development requiring a supportive environment rather than relying solely on individual effort. For example:
This reveals a view of dynamic harmony: life is like the growth of a tree, requiring alignment with nature (the flow of the Five Elements) rather than resistance. In a modern context, it critiques mechanical success theories—emphasizing the dialectical unity of external conditions (social support) and internal resilience (such as spring returning to a cold valley), advocating for a balance between foundation (Earth) and flow (Water) amidst rapid change.
