In astrological fate analysis, the core of predicting fortune transitions lies in the strength and state of the ruling planet of the current transit. For instance, when the life palace is in the sign of Zi (aligned with Saturn), it is favorable to see Saturn ⛰ bright and strong; when the life palace is in the sign of Yin (aligned with Jupiter), it is favorable to see Jupiter 🌳 bright and strong. If the ruling planet of the palace is weakened or afflicted by malefic stars, misfortunes are likely during this transit; if the ruling planet is in its domicile or exalted (in an advantageous position), blessings will flourish during this period. Even if malefic stars appear in the transit, they will only bring brief troubles around the time of their exact influence. However, certain specific configurations, such as Jupiter in Hai, Venus in Chen, Mercury in Si, or Saturn in Zi, may lead to bankruptcy, family separation, or even death during the transit, despite the ruling planet being in its domicile. For example, when Saturn transits the Zi and Chou signs for nearly five years, not everyone born during this period will experience fortune in the Zi-Chou transit—this reveals a key insight: while the Dongwei school emphasizes the ruling planet of the transit, a detailed analysis of degree positions and interactions of celestial longitudes and latitudes is also necessary. For instance, favorable degrees (degrees of mutual generation) bring luck, while adverse degrees (degrees of mutual conflict) bring misfortune. One must first assess the strength of the transit and then observe the waxing and waning of the monthly influence: if the ruling planet is strong, the degree is strong; if the ruling planet is weak, the degree is weak. This is a critical principle.
Specific example: For a life palace in Zi (ruled by Saturn), transiting the Chou sign and the Ox degree (associated with Metal) requires a smooth transition; the Dipper degree (associated with Wood) is challenging and depends on the interference of Jupiter and the Benevolent Star—if Jupiter and the Benevolent Star form a trine or direct aspect, or are in domicile or exaltation, it indicates multiple dangers; if Mercury 🌊 and the Ketu star assist Jupiter, and Jupiter is in season, life may end during the Dipper degree; if Jupiter and the Benevolent Star are weakened and suppressed, the Dipper degree may instead bring peace and success. When transiting the Yin sign (a difficult palace), Jupiter must be weakened and suppressed; the Ji degree is associated with Water, which generates Wood, so even seemingly favorable conditions may turn unfavorable; the Wei degree, however, turns favorable. If Jupiter is in its temple, joyful, and in a cardinal position, and the major transit encounters Water and Ketu supporting Jupiter while Jupiter is in season, death is certain during the Yin transit; but if Jupiter is strong and supported by Mars and Rahu 🔥, or Venus and Ketu 💎 forming aspects to counterbalance, life may be preserved but fortune may not flourish. When transiting the Mao sign (ruled by Mars), observe the state of Mars: if Jupiter and the Benevolent Star are in Mao, they transform difficulty into favor, leading to fortune; if Mars and Rahu are in trine or direct aspect, great wealth is indicated, but if Mars is imprisoned, fortune is slight; if Jupiter and the Benevolent Star are in Mao but Water and Ketu damage the favor in trine aspects, poverty and premature death are certain.
The three degrees of Xin, Fang, and Di require separate analysis: the Xin degree governs matters of spouse or hidden nobility, the Fang degree governs children and joyful events, and the Di degree is neutral for Jupiter and Saturn. When transiting the Chen sign, if Venus is in the same palace as Jupiter and the Benevolent Star or resides in a Wood degree, it turns adversity into favor; transiting the Jiao Wood degree brings repeated disasters or even death; if Venus is in a Fire degree and conjunct with Mars and Rahu, fortune flourishes. The Zhen Water degree: if Water is weak, it is favorable; if Water is strong and near Jupiter and the Benevolent Star, great fortune is interrupted. The Yi degree: if Jupiter and the Benevolent Star are alone with Water and Ketu assisting, death may occur, but if Venus, Ketu, Mars, or Rahu counterbalance, death may be avoided. In summary, favorable palace degrees bring luck, while difficult palace degrees bring misfortune. This example can be extrapolated.
To determine rise and fall, one must examine the intricate details of celestial longitudes and latitudes. The essence of transits is fully captured in this text.
Examples of transit degrees:
The above discussions on stellar degrees and their effects on success, failure, longevity, and premature death are based on the principles of mutual generation and conflict. These are illustrative examples and should not be generalized. If the ruling planet transits its own degree, there may still be both disaster and fortune; for example, Water transiting Water degrees or Fire transiting Fire degrees requires observing the seasonal climate and timing—excessive brightness of Fire leads to extinction 🔥, excessive abundance of Water leads to flooding 🌊. A comprehensive judgment must be made by examining the aspects of auspicious and inauspicious stars. The key saying: "Palace and degree must be analyzed together—this is the wondrous technique of humanity." If the palace ruler is supported but the degree ruler is harmed, there will be disaster but not death; if the degree ruler is favorable but the palace ruler is harmed, even with favorable stars in aspect, death may occur. The theory of reverse transits must be referenced for detailed accuracy.
Previous discussions on the mutual conflicts and fortunes of transits and life palaces do not fully capture the essence of dynamic transits. For example, transiting a generating degree (Metal) requires Metal to be strong for luck, but if Fire is weak, misfortune follows; conflicting degrees (e.g., Saturn absent) require Saturn to be strong for fortune, but if Saturn is weak, disaster follows. If the ruling planets of transits mutually conflict and damage each other, it reduces strength; if they mutually generate other elements, it drains energy—transiting these two types of degrees is unbeneficial; if the ruling planet is in its domicile or exaltation, nothing is unfavorable.
