The Canons of Treading the Heavens is a classic astrological text authored by Academician Yelü, exploring the auspicious and inauspicious influences of planets within the twelve celestial palaces. Below is a modern vernacular translation of each palace:
Zi and Chou Palaces 🌊🐂
Among the twelve palaces, caution and avoidance are necessary, requiring detailed analysis based on the fundamental stars (元宿). Aquarius (Zi Palace) particularly fears the arrival of Jupiter, but the influence of Ziqi (Jupiter's remnant energy) brings no harm. The fifth palace delights in Venus's radiance, while Jupiter and Qi are its adversaries. Huoluo (Mars and Rahu) are stars of fortune, bringing joy, whereas Shuibei (Mercury and Ketu) turn into sources of harm.
Explanation: The Zi Palace fears Jupiter but not Ziqi. Many individuals with their life palace (命宫) in Zi, where Ziqi transforms imprisonment (化解凶象), can still prosper and accumulate wealth. The Chou Palace favors Venus but fears Jupiter and Ziqi, as Chou belongs to the metal element, differing from Zi. It welcomes Huoluo but avoids Shuibei. It benefits from the energy of Venus and Ziqi, which steal Jupiter's influence, making it difficult for Jupiter to cause harm. The overall stellar configuration (全星) regards Venus as beneficial, Mercury as adversarial, and Rahu (大罗) as favorable.
Yin and Hai Palaces 🌳🐯
Both Yin and Hai Palaces belong to the wood element, and only Shuibei can bring fortune. Encountering Venus leads to withering (焦枯), while meeting Mars brings malice. The Yin Palace does not fear Huoluo entangled in the Ji water degree (特定度位), as Rahu can "boil the belly of the twin fish" (a metaphor for harm). However, it particularly dislikes the forceful intrusion of Tuji (Saturn and Ketu), as such invasions often lead to insufficiency.
Explanation: Both palaces belong to wood, favoring Shuibei and avoiding Huoluo. The Hai Palace represents winter wood, while the Yin Palace symbolizes spring wood. Winter wood fears being burned by fire, whereas spring wood, being vigorous, is less susceptible to burning but fears Tuji. Huoluo entangled in the Ji water degree is not feared. Shuibei is a benefic star, while Venus, as a Qi star, fears the energy drainage from Huoluo. Saturn is an adversarial star but need not always be feared
Mao and Xu Palaces 🔥🐰
Both Mao and Xu Palaces belong to the fire element, but they differ in nature. The Mao Palace does not regard Rahu as adversarial, while the Xu Palace encountering Rahu is inevitably ominous. Both palaces greatly welcome the presence of Muqi (Jupiter and Ziqi) but must avoid Shuibei. If the life ruler (大命) encounters Muqi, the annual运势 (fortune) will surely be smooth.
Explanation: The palaces belong to fire, favoring Muqi and Saturn but fearing Shuibei and Venus. The Xu Palace fears Rahu, while the Mao Palace does not, as Xu is the repository of fire (火库) and cannot pose a threat. Muqi is a benefic star, hence favored, while Rahu is adversarial. The most despised is Shuibei.
Chen and You Palaces ⚔️🐉
Both Chen and You Palaces follow Venus (太白), but their applications differ. The You Palace (西垣) particularly fears encountering Shuibei, as it drains its energy. The Chen Palace, however, welcomes Shuibei, but encountering Huoluo will lead to consumption (消烁). Tuji can act as the mother star (生助之星), while Muqi, as an idle god (闲神), is of little significance.
Explanation: Both palaces belong to metal, favoring Tuji but with different applications. Metal reaches its peak in You, fearing the energy drainage from Shuibei. The Chen Palace belongs to the water element, welcoming Shuibei for mutual nourishment but greatly fearing Huoluo. It favors Tuji. The functions of both palaces are similar: while Muqi may represent wealth, it can also harm the mother star of life, termed as the忌曜 (taboo star). Shuibei can drain energy, while Tuji acts as a benefic, hence favored.
Shen and Si Palaces 🌊🐒
Both Shen and Si Palaces belong to the water element, with Shen uniquely possessing clear water (水之清). The western region (Shen) benefits greatly from metal's energy, so why fear the intrusion of Tuji? The Si Palace, however, worries about Tuji, and those born during the day particularly fear Huoluo. Both water palaces must guard against Bei (Ketu), as encountering刑囚 (punishment and imprisonment) deepens misfortune.
Explanation: Both palaces belong to water. The Shen Palace is where metal resides, fearing the suppression from Tuji (克制). The Si Palace represents April water, most fearing Tuji. Both palaces particularly fear Bei, as Bei is the remnant of water and can drain its energy. The water of the Si Palace fears Huoluo, while the wood of the Shen Palace fears Muqi. The intense heat of Huoluo can dry up water, and Muqi, as a关神 (obstructing god), can drain water, hence they are avoided. Although the term "dislike" is used, Tuji causes the deepest harm.
Sole Discussion of the Wu Palace ☀️🐎
The Lion Palace (Wu Palace) is known as the Sun, clearly indicating that Venus and Mercury bring auspiciousness. The supreme position (至尊之位) has no taboos, only fearing Jupiter's mischief. Ziqi, as a remnant star, is not fearsome, as its intangible nature cannot obscure the sun's light. During autumn and winter, its influence declines, while in spring and summer, it suffers harm.
Explanation: The Sun's position does not fear Huoluo, Ji, or Bei but most fears Jupiter. Jupiter is the ruler of the八煞 (eight adversities) and can obscure sunlight. In autumn and winter, branches wither and leaves fall, but in spring and summer, lush foliage can block sunlight. Ziqi, as Jupiter's remnant, has no tangible form in the sky and cannot cause harm. Many individuals born in the Guichou year with Ziqi in Shen have encountered this limit and prospered, and even if they did not, no great disaster occurred. Jupiter can obscure the Sun's light, hence the great caution during spring and summer.
Sole Discussion of the Wei Palace 🌙🐑
The Wei Palace is clearly the Cancer, solely governed by the Moon. It welcomes Jupiter, Ziqi, Mars, Rahu, and Venus but fears Tuji, which causes eclipse and obscurity When entangled in specific stellar degrees (心张危毕地), those born at night are particularly favored. If the upper star (上星) is strong and Jupiter weak, life will be full of fluctuations and mixed success.
Explanation: The Moon fears Tuji. If Muqi is strong, it does not cause overall harm, but if Muqi is weak and Tuji strong, success and failure are inevitable. It favors entanglement in the four lunar positions (吉位). The Moon possesses the clear energy of water and despises the two stars, Tuji.
