This chapter, "Qin Hall General Formulas - Volume II," delves into the positions and influences of the five stars (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) and celestial bodies like the sun and moon in astrological fate studies. It emphasizes how the favorable or unfavorable positions of these stars affect an individual's fortune, covering aspects such as wealth, poverty, longevity, family, and career. Through combinations of stars, it reveals life trajectories. In a modern context, this reflects the ancient wisdom of observing celestial movements and their connection to human life, though it should be approached rationally to avoid superstition.
Favorable Positions of the Five Stars:
Metal Star 💰 in the western sector symbolizes great achievements and success; Wood Star 🌳 facing sunlight and warmth represents stable talent and reliable performance; Water Star 🌊 turning south signifies smooth and stable fortune; Fire Star 🔥 in the Mao or Xu position indicates a generous and warm personality; Earth Star ⛰️ spreading across the four directions brings endless blessings and longevity. When stars are in their proper positions, they generally bring good fortune.
Unfavorable Positions of the Five Stars:
Metal Star 💰 entering the fire sector may lead to the decline of family wealth; Wood Star 🌳 entering the metal domain often brings sorrow and sighing; Water Star 🌊 in the Zhen Di position makes it difficult to achieve fame and wealth; Fire Star 🔥 entering Si or Shen may indicate self-reliance in a foreign land; Earth Star ⛰️ in Yin or Hai causes family wealth to vanish like ice. Improper alignment of the five stars generally brings misfortune.
Five Indicators of Poverty and Hardship:
Entering a凶位 (unfavorable position) may lead to unemployment for the entire family; a weak or陷弱 (debilitated) wealth star results in lifelong poverty; the mother star in a煞宫 (malefic palace) causes lifelong stagnation; damage to the合母 (combined mother star) brings self-inflicted poverty; the metal star overcoming the mother star indicates long-term poverty.
Essential Knowledge of the Five Stars:
The five stars and six luminaries move through the palaces, and the favorable positions of the sun and moon must be clearly understood. If a star is debilitated without delay or acceleration, careful analysis is required to determine its influence.
Void Positions of the Five Stars:
Metal in void produces sound (opportunities with noise); Fire in void brings sudden opportunities; Earth in void leads to loss; Wood in void causes setbacks; Water in void may deplete resources like rivers and seas.
Sun in Zi, Moon in Wu:
The sun in Zi and moon in Wu positions indicate poverty and early death. If the sun is in Xu and the moon in Zhang positions, fortune remains stable regardless of direction.
Sun, Moon, Metal, and Water:
The sun and moon in a person's life must be clear; if malefic stars invade, misfortune is heavy. If metal and water provide support, it brings intelligence or opportunities, if not wealth.
Career and Fortune Stars with Sun and Moon:
The career star facing the sun brings nobility; the fortune star following the moon攀 (climbs) fortune. If the sun is debilitated, the person may end up in humble circumstances; if the身主 (body star) encounters刑 (conflict), life becomes difficult.
Malefic Stars Gathering:
Malefic stars gathering create郊战 (battles), bringing significant misfortune to a person's life. However, if they face the sky in the亥 (Hai) position, they transform into伏化 (hidden) auspicious stars, turning misfortune into fortune.
Multiple Stars in One Palace:
If multiple stars are in the命宫 (life palace), their strength must be assessed. Only strong stars dominate; weak or闲星 (idle stars) should not be overvalued.
One Star per Palace:
Having one star per palace with虚拱 (empty opposition) is most honorable. Meeting the moon in the命宫 is highly favorable, and achieving a favorable position makes one outstanding in the world.
Sun and Moon in the Children Palace:
The children palace holds mysteries: daytime births fear the moon's presence, while nighttime births fear the sun's presence. Even if children are born, they may not thrive.
Moon in the Spouse Palace during Limits:
For men, encountering the moon during limits may lead to frequent marriages or affairs. If metal and孛 (comet) enter together, it may indicate romantic indulgence or wastefulness.
April with Mao Hour:
Those born in April during Mao hour may have short lives or strained relationships with fathers, as fathers may not accompany them for thirty years.
October with You Hour:
Those born in October during You hour with the moon in Mao may experience marital discord or separation if born during the day and entering巳 (Si) limits.
Yang Blade with Malefic Stars:
The blade star is most dangerous with malefic stars, bringing misfortune during limits. For women, it may indicate childbirth dangers; for men, it may lead to a violent end.
Self-Blade and Misfortune:
The阳刃 (yang blade) is particularly unfavorable in the自刃宫 (self-blade palace), with戊午 (Wu Wu) and丙午 (Bing Wu) being the most凶 (malefic). Meeting壬子 (Ren Zi) and癸丑 (Gui Chou) may lead to danger and an untimely death.
Four Malefics in Yang Palaces:
Water,孛, wood, and earth in yang palaces may bring parental misfortune, physical disabilities, or lifelong illnesses.
Rahu in Life Degree:
If Rahu is in the life degree, the person may be talkative or prone to conflicts, making it hard to interact peacefully. Such individuals may struggle to learn gentleness.
Metal and Rahu with Sun:
Metal and Rahu with the sun in a yang palace may bring parental disasters or untimely deaths, possibly due to plagues, dysentery, or violence.
Metal and Rahu with Moon:
Similar to the above, it may lead to重新拜双亲 (re-parenting) or the biological mother facing separation or illness.
Metal and Moon in the Same Palace:
Metal and moon shining together at night enhance literary talent and academic success, making it easy to achieve fame through writing.
Jupiter in the Life Palace:
Jupiter entering the life palace may bring repeated disasters, such as legal issues, financial loss, or illnesses.
Double Wealth and Nobility:
Two palaces with nobility stars bring wealth; one palace with a wealth star brings vast lands. If wood and Rahu meet, it ensures honor and recognition in royal courts.
Comet in the Life Palace:
If a comet tail guards the life palace, it does not necessarily mean misfortune. Such individuals are often clever and cunning, and their loyalty cannot be trusted.
Moon in the Spouse Palace:
If the moon shines brightly in the spouse palace, it indicates a virtuous and clear-minded partner who is not only capable of managing households but also brings wealth and abundance.
Rahu in Life Limits:
Conflicts in marriage may arise due to Rahu in life limits. However, if Rahu is alone in the午 (Wu) position without malefic disturbances, it may bring a harmonious and lasting marriage.
Comet in the Wealth Palace:
If a comet guards the wealth palace, the person may be frugal or stingy, rarely strategizing for wealth accumulation.
Metal Star in Hai:
How did Peng Zu achieve longevity? The double fish and Venus were in his hall. If后人 (descendants) encounter this, they need not worry about premature death. (Peng Zu lived to 800, symbolizing longevity.)
Wealth Star Transforming into Expenditure:
If the wealth star transforms into expenditure, wealth comes and goes easily. If it meets刑囚 (conflict or imprisonment), it may lead to laughter in the forest of disputes, indicating financial instability.
Sun and Moon in Four Cardinal Directions:
The sun and moon in the same palace shining on the four cardinal directions bring unparalleled wealth and nobility. However, if malefic stars disrupt, it may lead to lifelong illnesses.
Longevity Star Robbed:
If the longevity star is robbed, longevity is hard to achieve, and the five blessings are incomplete. If further damaged or suppressed, it may lead to early death, as in the case of Li He, who was told, "The white jade tower awaits you," symbolizing premature death.
Retreating Qi Star:
If the retreating qi star is weak and unsupported, but流年 (annual) luck brings auspicious stars, it may feel like meeting an old friend in a foreign land, indicating a turnaround.
Sun and Moon in Time Palace:
The time palace is crucial as the emperor's seat. If the sun and moon are in favorable positions, it brings extraordinary fortune, either nobility or great wealth, and success in imperial exams.
Metal Star with Time and Water/Comet:
If the metal star meets water or comet during time, it may transform into expenditure or meet计都 (Ketu). For women, it may lead to becoming a charming escort; for men, it may indicate theft or servitude.
Comet in the Fifth Palace:
A comet in the fifth palace may bring unfilial children or disputes. Only after overcoming challenges can children become virtuous, indicating thin ties with offspring.
This chapter centers on how the positions of the five stars (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) and the sun and moon influence human fate, with favorable positions bringing good fortune and unfavorable ones bringing misfortune. It reflects ancient wisdom in predicting life events through celestial patterns. Key ideas include: star combinations determining personality, wealth, health, and family relationships; malefic or auspicious interactions altering fate; and the critical role of timing (e.g., birth hour).
In a modern context, these concepts can be seen as ancient empirical summaries of patterns rather than absolute predictions. For example:
This chapter explores cosmic interconnectedness and life's unpredictability: stars as cosmic symbols reflect humanity's search for order and chaos. Philosophically, it implies:
