General Interpretation
Question: The elemental force that generates the User God is the Original God, which is generally considered auspicious 🌱. But are there situations where auspiciousness turns into misfortune?
Answer: When the Original God is activated to generate the User God, if the User God appears and is strong (旺相 🔥), the auspiciousness is doubled. However, if the User God is in a state of旬空 (temporal void), weakened, or hidden and not appearing, one must wait until the User God exits the void, gains strength, or aligns with the appropriate day for the desired outcome to be achieved. If the User God is strong, but the Original God is dormant and inactive, or activated but transformed into a restraining, exhausted, or entombed state, or if it is broken by the month (月破), struck by the day (日冲), restrained by the Enemy God, impacted by the day or month, or transforms into a receding force—in these cases, the Original God cannot generate the User God and may instead harm its foundation ⚠️. This not only brings no benefit but may even cause harm!
Case 1: Heaven Fire Same Person (Tóng Rén) → Fire as Fire (Lí Wéi Huǒ) (Wife Divining About Husband’s Recent Illness)
The hexagram shows: The World Line (世爻) is亥水 (representing the husband), entombed on the辰 day, which appears ominous as it signifies "following the ghost into the tomb." Fortunately, the申金 Original God is activated to generate the User God, and it transforms into未土, which further generates the Original God. Additionally,戌土 is covertly activated to assist the Original God, indicating the husband’s foundation is stable. However,亥水 is in旬空, temporarily unable to receive generation. Recovery required waiting until the巳 day, when亥水 is stirred into action by the冲 force. The husband indeed recovered on己巳日. ✅
Case 2: Marsh Water Predicament (Kùn) → Water Marsh Moderation (Jié) (Divining About Feng Shui)
The query was about ancestral grave feng shui. The hexagram shows a six-line combination, indicating gathered energy and concealed wind—a sign of good feng shui. However,亥水 and申金 are struck by the day.申金 is the Original God of water, suggesting that the original water flow does not follow its proper course (不归漕). If the water could return to its proper channel instead of flowing astray, official reappointment would occur in the巳 year, and a child would be born in the申 year. This indeed came true. Reappointment in the巳 year was due to the World Line寅木 transforming into an official star; the birth of a child in the申 year was because亥水 (offspring) transformed into申金, which generates it in return. 🌊
Case 3: Heaven Fire Same Person (Tóng Rén) → Fire Mountain Traveler (Lǚ) (Self-Divination About Recent Illness)
In this self-divination about illness, the World Line亥水 is the User God, and the activated申金 Original God generates it, indicating a non-fatal condition. However,申金 transforms into未土, which is broken by the month and in旬空, leaving the Original God rootless. While there was no immediate danger, the risk was feared in spring. The person indeed passed away on立春 (Start of Spring). The timing aligned with the申金 Original God being struck by the month, and the spring wood’s strength overcoming未土. 🍃
Case 4: Earth Wind Rising (Shēng) → Earth Water Army (Shī) (Son Divining About Father’s Illness)
亥水, the father line, is the User God. Although in旬空, the activated酉金 Original God generates it, which should have been harmless. However,酉金 transforms into午火, which restrains it in return, injuring the Original God and leaving the User God rootless. The father indeed passed away at the卯 year,卯 month,卯 day, and卯 hour. The timing corresponded to the strengthening of午火, which restrained and struck the Original God. ⏰
The Original God generating the User God is fundamentally auspicious, but the outcome depends on the dynamic states of both the User God and the Original God. If either is impaired (e.g., void, restrained, or transformed negatively), auspiciousness may turn into misfortune. Key factors include the activation and transformation of lines, external influences (e.g., strikes by the day or month), and timing (exiting the void, aligning with the day).
The Yi Jing reveals the relativity and dynamism of auspiciousness and misfortune, reflecting the concept of "change" (变易) in Chinese philosophy—things develop through movement, with no absolute good or bad. This encourages a flexible, adaptive worldview, emphasizing observation of changes and seizing opportunities rather than fixed judgments.
