Between yin and yang, movement and stillness constantly transform. Though the phenomena of all things are complex and varied, they all require a core principle to be understood comprehensively. Human aptitude varies between the virtuous and the mediocre, just as hexagrams can be excessive or deficient. What is overly vigorous must be restrained to achieve success; what is insufficient must be supplemented to gain benefit. Nourishment and support are like timely rain moistening seedlings 🌱; overcoming, harming, punishing, and clashing are akin to autumn frost withering plants and trees. A state of Changsheng (Longevity) and Diwang (Imperial Vigor) is like a flourishing golden valley garden; falling into the realms of Si (Death), Mu (Tomb), Kong (Emptiness), or Jue (Extinction) is like being trapped in the hell of muddy plows.
The Day Branch (Ri Chen) is the master of the six lines, favored for its ability to dispel misfortune and bring peace; the Month Branch (Yue Jian) is the guiding principle of all hexagrams, which should not foster evil but rather suppress it. The most crucial to be wary of is the Year Lord (Tai Sui), which favors stillness over movement; the most critical is the Self Line (Shi Yao, representing one's own position), which welcomes support and dislikes being harmed.
The Self Line represents oneself, the Corresponding Line (Ying Yao) represents others; it is best if they harmonize with each other. The Moving Line represents the beginning, the Changing Line represents the outcome; if the self contends with other lines, it is unfavorable. If the Corresponding Line is harmed, it is unfavorable for matters concerning others; if the Self Line is restrained, one's own plans are difficult to achieve. If both Self and Corresponding Lines are empty, people's hearts are difficult to fathom; if both inner and outer trigrams are moving, affairs are bound to be changeable. If the Self Line moves frequently, it is like a horse turning its head left and right, indecisive; if the Corresponding Line moves excessively, the intention is as restless as a monkey climbing branches.
When the Useful Spirit (Yong Shen) has vitality and encounters no obstruction, all matters can succeed; when the Main Image (Zhu Xiang) is isolated and further harmed, all plans are difficult to realize. If harmed, remedy is needed; without cause, do not fall into Kong Wang (Empty and Perishing). An empty line meeting a clash becomes useful instead; a combined pattern being broken nullifies previous efforts. Self-emptiness transforming into emptiness inevitably invites misfortune. Punishment combinations and overcoming combinations ultimately reveal contradictions. A moving line meeting a combination gets entangled; a still line receiving a clash rises subtly. Entering the tomb makes overcoming difficult; carrying vigor is not truly empty. Those with support, even if weak and dormant, turn auspicious; those greedy for generation or combination can resolve punishment, clash, overcoming, and harm. It is necessary to distinguish decline and vigor to clarify overcoming and combining relationships, and to differentiate movement and stillness to determine the timing of punishment and clash.
Combining without truly combining, clashing without truly clashing is due to interference from extra characters; punishment not being true punishment, combination not being true combination is due to insufficient strength of the branch spirits. A line encountering the vigor of the Month Branch is difficult for external forces to harm; a Hidden Spirit (Fu Shen) residing in an empty position means affairs go against one's wishes. A Hidden Spirit without promotion is ultimately futile; a Flying Spirit (Fei Shen) not being pushed aside is also in vain. A Hidden Spirit under emptiness is easy to draw out; a weak ruler under restraint is difficult to sustain. The Day Branch harming a line brings real calamity; a line harming the Day Branch is but an empty name. A tomb storing a person (line) does not emerge without a clash; the body (Self Line) carrying an Official Ghost (Guan Gui) does not find peace without removal.
A Noble Person (De Shen, Virtue Spirit) entering the hexagram means all plans succeed; a Jealous Spirit (Ji Shen) approaching the body brings repeated obstacles. Encountering an inauspicious star in the hexagram, avoiding it can turn things auspicious. A line meeting a Jealous Killing Spirit (Ji Sha), if subdued, suffers no harm. The Main Image being dormant fears encountering punishment, clash, overcoming, and harm; the Useful Line moving dreads falling into death, tomb, emptiness, and extinction. Useful transforming into useful changes from useful to useless; emptiness transforming into emptiness, though empty, is not truly empty. Nourishment (Yang) indicates hesitation; tomb (Mu) signifies obscurity. Transforming into illness symbolizes damage; transforming into embryo (Tai) foretells entanglement. Inauspicious transforming into longevity means the inauspicious momentum continues unbroken; auspicious connecting to bathing (Mu Yu) means success is ruined. Beware of turning back to overcome oneself; do not assist others only to harm oneself. When an inauspicious star is isolated, fear the Day Branch aiding its inauspiciousness; when Useful Lines are numerous, welcome the tomb's containment. Affairs encounter obstacles due to the moving of intervening lines; the mind becomes unsettled due to the Self Line falling into emptiness.
When hexagram lines move, one must observe the Jiao and Chong (yin and yang moving transformations). Moving and changing in harmony, one should understand advance and retreat. A Killing Spirit generating the Self Line should not be simply judged as auspicious; a Useful Line overcoming the Self Line should not be directly deemed inauspicious. One must know that generation may hide punishment and harm requiring vigilance, and combination may contain overcoming and injury demanding caution. Punishment and harm are not suitable for the Useful Spirit; death and extinction should not be held by the Self Line body. Movement meeting clash disperses affairs; extinction meeting generation completes affairs. If encountering combination and being held, a breakthrough is needed to succeed; if encountering dormancy, vitality and vigor are necessary for completion. For urgent timing, observe movement overcoming the Self Line; for slow timing, observe stillness generating the body. The Parents Line (Fu Mu Yao) empty means affairs lack a clear head; the Offspring Line (Zi Sun Yao) hidden means affairs do not follow one's heart. Although the Official Ghost signifies calamity, if hidden and lacking qi, it is not inauspicious; although the Offspring is a blessing and virtue, if too numerous, it becomes ineffective instead.
Investigating the Parents Line can be seen as the overall situation; judging the Official Ghost Line can determine the root of misfortune. The Wealth Line (Cai Yao) is the god of salary, the Offspring is blessing and virtue. The Siblings Line (Xiong Di Yao) moving repeatedly inevitably leads to many obstacles in plans; the Hexagram Body (Gua Shen) overlapping indicates that matters are intricately connected. The White Tiger (Bai Hu) moving, even encountering an auspicious spirit, does not harm its auspiciousness; the Azure Dragon (Qing Long) soaring, even meeting an inauspicious star, cannot conceal its inauspiciousness. The Dark Warrior (Xuan Wu) governs matters of theft but requires the Official Ghost for joint reference; the Vermilion Bird (Zhu Que) is the god of disputes but needs the Siblings Line to appear together. For illness, the Heavenly Joy Star (Tian Xi Xing) shining is most suitable; if inauspicious killing spirits are added, sorrow is inevitable. For travel, the Going to Peril Killing Spirit (Wang Wang Sha) blocking the path is most feared; if auspicious spirits are encountered, benefit is ultimately obtained. From this, it can be seen that rather than obsessing over numerous auspicious and inauspicious spirits, it is better to grasp the fundamental principle of generation, overcoming, restraint, and transformation.
📜 It must be known: Those who study Yijing divination find it easy to advance by understanding the wisdom of predecessors; those who seek divination find it efficacious by drawing on historical experience. Divination must be done with sincere intention; even on an inauspicious day (ancient taboo day for divination), it is acceptable.
The opening of "The Golden Strategy" establishes the philosophical view of "one principle permeating all phenomena," emphasizing that despite myriad phenomena, the core principle of yin-yang generation and overcoming permeates all judgments. It proposes the idea of "dynamic balance": excess must be reduced, deficiency must be supplemented, pursuing the way of harmony and balance. It establishes core analytical frameworks such as Self-Corresponding, Useful Spirit, movement-stillness, Day-Month, laying the theoretical foundation for subsequent specific judgments.
This theory can be understood in modern terms as: any complex system has its core operating principle ("one principle"). In personal development, business decisions, and relationship management, it is necessary to identify key factors ("Useful Spirit"), assess the balance of forces among various parties ("generation-overcoming"), and grasp the timing of changes ("movement-stillness"). "What is overly vigorous must be restrained to achieve success" aligns with the "bottleneck theory" in modern management science, while "what is insufficient must be supplemented to gain benefit" resembles the thinking of addressing weaknesses.
The "Self-Corresponding" relationship can be analogized to the interaction patterns between self and others in modern interpersonal relationship theories; the dominance of "Day-Month" reminds us to pay attention to the influence of the macro environment (Month Branch) and specific timing (Day Branch) on affairs.
This rhyme embodies the ancient Chinese philosophical thought of the "Way of Harmony and Balance," emphasizing dynamic balance rather than absolute good or bad. Its "relativity of auspiciousness and inauspiciousness" (a Killing Spirit generating the body should not be simply judged as auspicious; a Useful Line overcoming the Self Line should not be directly deemed inauspicious) reminds us: any judgment needs to be placed in a specific context; there is no absolute auspiciousness or inauspiciousness, only relative suitability or unsuitability. This dialectical thinking is extremely valuable in modern complex decision-making.
Contemporary Yijing researchers apply these principles to:
