Overall Paraphrased Translation
When ill, few recover naturally without seeking medical help; many perish needlessly from incorrect medication. To choose a skilled doctor and heed their advice, one must inquire of heaven's will through divination 🌿. If the Yao representing the doctor (Ying Yao) is in a state of Kong Wang (emptiness and absence), it means a suitable doctor cannot be found; if the Yao representing medicine (Zi Sun Yao) is hidden, the medicine will be difficult to take effect. If the Gui Gui Yao (representing illness) moves within the hexagram, it indicates a complex condition unlikely to improve soon; if the Shi Yao (representing the patient) is in Kong Wang, it shows the patient's inner anxiety and insistence on treatment.
If the Gui Gui Yao is strong while the Zi Sun Yao is weak, the medicine's potency is too light to overcome the severe illness; if the Ying Yao is weak and the Shi Yao strong, the patient's family is wealthy but the doctor is poor. The Fu Mu Yao (representing parents/knowledge) should not hold the Shi position, and the Gui Gui Sha Xing (illness-star) must not approach the body. If Gui Gui transforms into Gui Gui, the illness fluctuates and changes unpredictably; if Zi Sun transforms into Zi Sun, the medication formula is not refined enough. If Zi Sun transforms into a Ji Shen (unfavorable deity), beware of mistakenly taking fatal, inferior medicine; if the Ying Yao is adjacent to Gui Gui, be cautious of prescriptions that may instead worsen the condition.
If Gui Gui carries the Ri Jian Shen Sha (daily stem/branch deity), it is certainly no ordinary minor illness; if the Ying Yao carries the power of Yue Jian (monthly stem/branch), it definitely indicates an officially certified skilled doctor. Even if Zi Sun moves while Gui Gui is hidden beneath the Shi Yao, the medicine may be good but the root cause of illness is hard to eliminate; if a weak Yao harbors Gui Gui which then approaches the body Yao, the illness may be mild but medicine's power finds it hard to support. If the Fu Mu Yao is hidden, the doctor is reputed but lacks real medical understanding; if Gui Gui does not appear, medication is blind without recognizing the illness source.
If the Yong Shen (useful deity) is in a Jue (cut-off) position and also injured, even the divine physician Bian Que could hardly save; if the Fu Mu Yao is strong and obtains a favorable position, even the most advanced medical skill is ineffective. Observe the Five Element attribute of Gui Gui to determine medication — Fire/Earth Gui Gui requires cold/cooling agents; examine the Zi Sun Yao's direction to welcome a doctor — Chou/Yin (Northeast) direction for a good doctor. If a Water Yao with Cai Xing (wealth star) moves, strictly avoid fish, seafood, and raw/cold foods; if a Wood Yao is assisted by Qing Long (Azure Dragon), it is suitable to soothe the mood and broaden the mind.
If the Cai Yao combines with the Yong Shen and moves in the outer trigram, vomiting therapy can lead to recovery; if the Zi Sun Yao encounters the virtue of Fire and resides in the Li (Fire) Palace, moxibustion treatment can restore health. The Zi Sun Yao in the Kan (Water) trigram necessitates sweat-inducing treatment; a Wood Gui Gui requires first dispersing wind and dispelling pathogenic factors. If the Yong Shen is strong and receives support, avoid excessive tonification; when Gui Gui is weak and belongs to Water, acupuncture therapy is not advisable.
If both Zi Sun and Gui Gui are empty, recovery occurs without treatment; if both Zi and Gui move simultaneously, internal tonification and external treatment are needed. If two Zi Sun Yao move in the hexagram, medication should be taken at intervals; if Gui Gui injures the two Jian Yao (representing the chest/diaphragm area), the prescription needs to widen the chest and regulate qi. If Fu Mu combines and transforms into Zi Sun, do not recuperate behind closed doors; if the fifth Yao transforms into Zi Sun, one may encounter a skilled roadside doctor. If Shi and Ying are in harmony (Bi He) but there is no Zi Sun Yao, the doctor must be changed; if Cai and Gui move while Zi Sun is empty, taking medicine is futile.
When divining matters of medicine and healing, one must pray sincerely and silently. Regarding which doctor to use or whether medicine will be effective, there is no need to specify surnames. The diviner judges based on this chapter, naturally avoiding the pitfalls of recommending doctors. With such sincerity, one can connect with the divine, and the hexagram's indications will be unfailingly accurate! Is this not the shared understanding between doctor and patient?
