The form of the Dao is manifested in all things, and its fundamental principles are ultimately understood through a single mind 🌌. The Book of Changes exhausts the ways of heaven, earth, and humanity; how can divination overlook the six domestic animals (such as oxen, horses, sheep, etc.)? Only through meticulous observation can clarity be achieved. Fate resides in the Fu Shen (the Yao position representing blessings). If it encounters prosperity, careful nurturing is required 🐄; benefits belong to the Cai Wei (the Yao position representing wealth). If it encounters imprisonment or decline (a weakened state), gains will certainly be slight. Both the Fu Shen and Cai Wei are indispensable and generally should appear together.
If wealth is prosperous but blessings are weak, the animal may be thin but good at running 🏃; if wealth is empty but blessings are active, it may be generally slow but still presentable. If wealth is in a state of emptiness (a void state), there may be temporary benefits but no lasting strength; if blessings face punishment or harm (affected by penal clashes or injuries), there will either be a split nose (yà bí) or scars 🩹. If positions are harmoniously generating wealth (Yao positions harmonize and generate wealth), the animal will certainly be gentle and kind; if positions clash or overcome each other (Yao positions conflict and restrain), it will surely be stubborn and untamed. To understand the hooves, feet, and body shape, one must observe the associated trigram positions (e.g., Qian represents horses, Kun represents oxen); to distinguish colors like green, yellow, white, and black, one must refer to the generating and overcoming relationships of the Six Deities (Qinglong, Zhuque, etc.) 🎨. Yin and Yang differentiate between male and female, while the fetal and nurturing positions represent foals, calves, lambs, chicks, and the like. If the body resides in the offspring or fetal position, it certainly indicates a pregnant animal; if blessings approach the ghost or tomb (Fu Shen enters the tomb or is near the Gui Yao), one should know there is illness 🤒.
If the Parent Yao moves, there will be harm; if the Offspring Yao is cut off, efforts will be in vain. If the Brother Yao is active, growth will not last; if blessings assist, there will be support instead. If the World Yao is empty, disappointment will ultimately follow ❌. Encountering Metal in a prosperous state should raise concerns about biting 🦷; encountering Earth in repeated movements indicates worries about contagious diseases 🦠. If the Official Yao is combined with the Snake or Sparrow (Gui Yao with Tengshe or Zhuque), it must be due to lawsuits or fright; if the Offspring Yao transforms into Brother or Wealth Yao, it can verify whether the animal eats coarse or fine food 🍽️. If the Wealth Yao is connected to the Brother Yao, it indicates untimely feeding; if the Offspring Yao transforms into the Parent Yao, it must be due to excessive mental strain 💆. If blessings are connected to the Gui Yao, one must guard against thieves 🚨; if the Gui Yao transforms into the Offspring Yao, the animal is likely stolen. If the Official and Brother Yao alternate and transform, disputes and gossip are unavoidable; if the Day and Month clash and punish, how can accidental death be avoided ☠️? If divining about a purchase, it is also advisable for blessings to move and generate the self; if inquiring about the timing of profit, one should most fear wealth prospering but transforming into a cut-off state. Whether gambling or fighting (e.g., horse racing or cockfighting), a prosperous World Yao and active Wealth Yao are favorable; whether hunting or fishing, one should always fear an empty Response Yao and cut-off blessings 🎯. For nursing animals (e.g., raising young), it is advisable for the fetal and blessing positions to be prosperous and unharmed; for treating illnesses, the Parent and Official Yao should be weak and cut off but restrained 💊.
The core of this ancient text lies in applying the principles of Yi Studies divination to the management of the six domestic animals. It emphasizes predicting the health, temperament, benefits, and risks of livestock through Yao position generation and overcoming (e.g., Wealth, Blessings, Official, Parent, Offspring Yao) and changes in the Five Elements and Six Deities. It embodies the idea that "all things share the same principle," applying natural laws (such as Yin-Yang and the Five Elements) to specific life practices and pursuing the harmony of the unity of heaven and humanity 🪷.
In a modern context, this can be analogized to decision-making references for pet care, animal husbandry, or animal management. For example:
Overall, this is a prediction system based on observation and logic rather than superstition, helping modern people approach animal care more rationally.
This text deeply explores the relationship between humans and nature: Through Yi Studies, livestock are viewed as part of the cosmos, their fate interconnected with the Five Elements and Yao positions. This reflects the ancient Chinese philosophy of "heaven-human resonance," emphasizing observing natural laws to guide human affairs. In modern times, this encourages us to treat ecosystems holistically, such as balancing economics and ethics in animal husbandry to avoid over-exploitation of animals 🌍. Simultaneously, it implies the idea of "mind and matter as one"—principles ultimately reside in the mind, meaning decisions stem from human insight and moral choices rather than mechanical predictions.
