This chapter explores the key principles of divination regarding officialdom and career advancement. It emphasizes that selecting the virtuous and capable to govern the people is fundamental for the state, while personal pursuit of high positions and generous salaries should prioritize official emolument as the primary means of support. 🌱 If the Wife/Wealth line is prosperous and generates support, it symbolizes abundant wealth and indicates one is sure to receive a generous official salary. If the Officer/Ghost line is vigorous and flourishing, representing an illustrious official position, one is destined to rise to the highest first-rank status. Conversely, if the Offspring line is active and moving repeatedly, one must beware of dismissal or removal from office. If the Brother line moves, one must guard against salary cuts or suspension of provisions. When the Parent line is in vain (empty), do not expect to receive the appointment document. If the Officer line is hidden and latent, do not vainly hope for promotion in rank or title.
If the Monthly Branch generates and supports the Self line, it foretells a timely opportunity, a meeting of favorable circumstances. If the Year Ruler combines with the Self line, it signifies one is sure to receive imperial favor and grace. If the Self line moves and encounters emptiness, the official position will be difficult to maintain long. If the Body line is empty and without rescue, life may encounter danger and difficulty. If the Officer/Ghost transforms into Offspring, clashing and overcoming, the current official position may be replaced. If the Wife/Wealth line approaches the White Tiger and moves, one will inevitably encounter the mourning period for a parent (Ding You). If the Daily Branch clashes with and overcomes the Self line, it will certainly invite much slander and defamation. If ghostly afflictions injure the body, disaster is unavoidable. If the Brother line transforms into an Officer/Ghost without affection, it indicates discord among colleagues. If the Year Ruler adds punishment and is unfavorable, demotion and disaster cannot be escaped. A quiet hexagram with an empty Self line is an omen of retirement. An empty Body line with moving afflictions is a sign to avoid calamity.
If an Officer/Ghost lies latent near the body and is not empty, the official's black gauze cap (symbol of office) will ultimately not be removed. Wealth empty and Officer moving indicates fame may be resounding but the purse is empty. Officer prosperous and Parent declining means the position may be high but the yamen (office) is desolate. Holding a position as a Censor (Feng Xian) is all because the Monthly Branch holds the value of the Officer line. Serving in a deputy position (Er Si) is only because the Ghost approaches a side position. Pacifying and comforting the common people is difficult if the Brother line moves, as it hinders transforming the stubborn and ignorant. Inspecting the four quarters, if the Path is empty, there will be much worry, alarm, and strange occurrences. Going on expedition to suppress and capture rebels: if the Virtue/Fortune line flourishes, then bandits and enemies will be annihilated. Guarding the border frontiers: if the hexagram lines are quiet, then China and foreign lands will be peaceful and secure. Submitting memorials, presenting remonstrances: one cannot bear the Year Ruler's punishment and clash. For Buddhist/Taoist monks or medical officials, how can the document (Parent) line move? One only needs to deduce and examine according to the duty and rank, then one can recognize the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the official career. ⚖️
The core of this chapter lies in using Six Lines (Liu Yao) divination to predict the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of an official career. It emphasizes that a "prosperous and strong Officer/Ghost" line indicates promotion, "Wife/Wealth" indicates salary, while movement of the "Offspring" or "Brother" lines indicates unfavorable outcomes. It reflects the ancient philosophy of the interaction between heavenly mandate and human affairs within the officialdom, believing that hexagram images can reveal crucial factors such as job stability, colleague relationships, and avoidance of disasters.
In a modern context, this can be analogized to the workplace or public administration: the Officer/Ghost line represents position and power; the Wife/Wealth line symbolizes salary and benefits; the Offspring line hints at competition or subordinate issues; the Brother line points to colleague conflicts. For example, "prosperous Officer/Ghost" corresponds to obtaining promotion opportunities through hard work in the modern workplace; "Brother moving indicates discord" can be interpreted as needing to guard against internal team friction. The divination principles are based on the Five Elements' generation and overcoming cycles (e.g., Officer/Ghost belongs to Metal, Wife/Wealth belongs to Earth). Modern individuals can view it as a risk warning tool rather than superstitious prophecy. Combined with data analysis, concepts like "emptiness" (Kong Wang) or "movement" (Fa Dong) in the hexagram can be understood as timing not yet ripe or dynamic changes, encouraging comprehensive assessment of environmental factors before making decisions.
This chapter deeply explores the balance between "heavenly mandate and human effort": success or failure in an official career depends not only on personal effort ("devoting oneself to assist the ruler") but also on external opportunities ("meeting of favorable circumstances"). It implies the Daoist thought of "acting in accordance with the trend," emphasizing maintaining vigilance amidst change (line movement). From a modern perspective, this encourages a rational view of success and failure, cultivates resilience, avoids excessive attachment to position or material wealth ("fame resounding but purse empty"), and pursues the original intention of serving society.
