This chapter emphasizes the careful analysis of the combination of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches to determine a person's fortune and misfortune 🌊🔥. The original annotation states: The interaction between stems and branches requires scrutiny of their advancing and retreating mechanisms to accurately predict blessings and calamities.
Ren's commentary notes: This is the key to rectifying errors. Analyzing stems and branches must be based on correct principles—focusing on the waxing and waning of the Five Elements and their favorable or unfavorable aspects—rather than neglecting the essence of the Four Pillars in pursuit of exotic patterns or superstitious theories like "special configurations" or "divine signs," which can lead to inaccurate predictions. The core of destiny analysis lies in the Useful God (用神). Whether it is wealth, official status, seals, peers, food and injury, or killing stars, any of these can serve as the Useful God. One should not favor or reject a component simply because its name sounds "auspicious" or "inauspicious." The key is to examine the strength of the Day Master and the needs of the Useful God—suppressing what should be suppressed and supporting what should be supported—to achieve precise adjustments. This way, the fortunes and misfortunes become clear, and predictions will be consistently accurate.
First Example Analysis:
At first glance, the stem reveals the "Three Wonders" (甲甲戊庚), and the branches suggest "supporting nobility" (子辰拱申). The configuration lacks clashes, and the official star (午火) appears functional, seemingly promising fame and wealth. However, the Day Master 庚申 is born in late spring (辰月), when the Water element is weak. While the official star 午火🔥 could theoretically be used, the Water's power is strengthened by the combined Water formation (申子辰合水) 🌊, diminishing the Fire's influence and damaging the official star. If the Water God (壬水) is used instead to counter the excess, it is thwarted by the Earth's (戊土) seizure, rendering it ineffective. The Wood wealth star (甲木) could theoretically restrain the Earth and protect Water, but the Wood is in retreat while the Earth is dominant, making its influence negligible. Even if Wood is employed, it is a "false god," indicating an unremarkable fate. With fortunes moving southwest (where Wood is weak), ancestral wealth is lost, spouses suffer, children are harmed, and life remains lonely and bitter. This example proves that ignoring the Useful God and focusing solely on exotic patterns like "supporting nobility" is entirely fallacious.
Second Example Analysis:
At first glance, this chart seems entirely flawed: the stems 壬丙 clash, the branches 子午 conflict from afar, and the cold Wood (乙木) yearning for warmth faces overwhelming Water and extinguished Fire, suggesting little chance of success. However, upon closer examination: there are three Waters, two Earths, and two Fires. The Water is strong but lacks Metal to nourish it; the Fire, though weak, is protected by Earth (child saving mother). The stems show 壬水生 乙木 and 丙火生 己土, each establishing its own domain without conflict. Though the branches are Water-dominated 🌊, the presence of 己土 with roots suffices to restrain Water and protect Fire 🔥, embodying the principle of "curing illness with the right remedy." Born at the turn of winter to spring, Wood and Fire are gaining strength, making the artistic talent (壬水) the Useful God. Midlife fortunes shift southeast (where Fire and Wood thrive), empowering the Useful God, ensuring success in imperial examinations. Entering the 寅运, Fire nourishes Wood 🌱, leading to top honors in the exams and a meteoric rise in the Hanlin Academy.
These two examples demonstrate how indispensable the principles of stem-branch combination truly are.
