When auspicious signs (吉神) are too conspicuously displayed 🔥, they easily invite contention; when ominous elements (凶物) are overly concealed 🌑, they breed hidden dangers, akin to nurturing a tiger that eventually turns on its master.
Original Annotation Supplement: If favored auspicious signs in a destiny chart appear prominently in the heavenly stems (天干), the arrival of unfavorable annual cycles (岁运) will inevitably provoke contention. Thus, it is safer for auspicious signs to remain hidden within the earthly branches (地支). Conversely, when inauspicious elements lurk in the earthly branches, their activation or collision during annual cycles can lead to significant calamity. Therefore, if inauspicious elements are revealed in the heavenly stems and promptly neutralized or transformed, the outcome may instead be favorable.
Ren's Commentary: The qi of the heavenly stems is singular—when auspicious signs are exposed, they are easily plundered, much like leaving valuables unlocked for anyone to seize. For instance, if the heavenly stems reveal Jia (甲) or Yi (乙) as wealth signs (财星) 🔥, the Geng (庚) or Xin (辛) annual cycles will trigger competition unless preemptively countered by controlling elements like Bing (丙) or Ding (丁) (官星) 🔥, or harmonized via Ren (壬) or Gui (癸) (食伤) 🌊. The qi of the earthly branches is complex—ominous elements buried deep are harder to control, like internal threats that elude detection. For example, if Bing fire (劫财) 🔥 hides within the Yin (寅) branch, the clash with Shen (申) during annual cycles may suppress the wood but fail to eradicate the fire; encounters with Hai (亥) or Zi (子) 🌊 might even fuel it. Hence, concealed auspicious signs confer lifelong blessings, while exposed inauspicious elements are more manageable. The crux lies in their "seasonal strength" (当令): auspicious signs rooted in their dominant season remain unharmed even when revealed; inauspicious elements weakened by seasonal decay pose no threat when hidden. Guiguzi’s teachings on yin-yang harmony with the sun and moon 🌞🌙, heaven and earth ⛰️🌊, and the four seasons 🍂🌱 encapsulate this essence—without deep reflection and discernment, how can one grasp its principles?
A Bing Fire (丙) daymaster born in the Wei (未) month 🔥, when fire is at its zenith. The Zi (子) water (官星) 🌊 beneath is exhausted by the Wei earth, leaving only the heavenly stem Xin metal (辛) ⚔️ as wealth. However, the parched Wei earth cannot nurture metal and harbors hidden blades (劫刃); the Ji earth (己) in the year pillar could theoretically foster metal but sits atop the Mao (卯) wood, forming a "revealed auspicious sign (Xin metal), concealed ominous element (blades)" pattern.
A Ding Fire (丁) daymaster born in the Si (巳) month 🔥, with rampant robbery stars (劫财) and a skewed resource star (枭印). The Ren water (壬) 🌊 in the heavenly stems lacks roots and is abandoned, but the hidden Xin metal (辛) ⚔️ within the Chou (丑) earth serves as a treasured wealth reservoir. Chou, as moist earth 🌱, dissipates fire and nurtures metal, eliminating contention while fostering prosperity.
The principle of "Concealment and Revelation" emphasizes dynamic equilibrium: favorable factors (auspicious signs) should hide 🌑 to prevent contention; unfavorable ones (ominous elements) should surface 🔥 for control. It reflects yin-yang ⚖️ wisdom—concealment as yin, revelation as yang—requiring adaptation to seasons and elemental strength.
| Scenario | Action Plan | Review Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Strength Mgmt. | Cultivate discreetly, avoid oversharing | Did exposure trigger rivalry? |
| Risk Response | Audit hidden issues (e.g., health checks) | Was mitigation timely? |
Concealment and revelation mirror cosmic 🌌 dynamics: revelation as active yang 🌞, concealment as passive yin 🌙. Overexposure disrupts balance (e.g., ecological harm); overconcealment breeds crises (e.g., social tensions). Moderns may cultivate internally while fulfilling external duties, echoing the I Ching’s "harmony with time."
