本草纲目
本篇为《本草纲目》介部,专论有甲壳的水生动物类药物。李时珍将龟、鳖、蟹、牡蛎、蚌、蛤蜊、田螺等归为一类,认为它们禀赋水中阴气而生,性味多偏咸寒,主入肝肾二经,善于滋阴潜阳、软坚散结、清热利湿。以下按药分述,逐一意译。

蛤蜊粉:
壳味甘咸、性大寒、无毒。古代认为能安神、解药毒及虫螫毒,与玳瑁等分磨人乳服。

介部药物共同体现了中医**"取象比类"** 的思维方法。介类药物皆有坚硬外壳,古人据此认为其能收敛固涩;其生于水中,禀阴寒之性,故善清热滋阴;其质沉重,故能潜阳镇降。
以龟甲、鳖甲为代表,二者均入肝肾,善于滋阴潜阳、软坚散结,是中医"介类潜阳"法的核心药物。古人认为阴虚则阳亢,如潮热、盗汗、梦遗等症,皆属"虚阳浮动",用龟甲、鳖甲之重镇沉降,使浮阳归于下焦。李时珍在此处列举的诸多方剂,如龟甲配地黄、知母、黄柏(即大补阴丸的雏形思路),鳖甲配三棱、桃仁治癥瘕,都体现了**"滋阴不碍邪、软坚不伤正"** 的治疗思想。
牡蛎的运用则集中体现了收敛固涩与软坚散结的双向调节:煅用偏于收敛止汗、止遗、止带、止血;生用偏于软坚散结、清热化痰。同一种药物,因炮制方法不同而功效侧重有别,这正是中药炮制学的精华所在。
田螺、螺蛳一类,性味甘寒,功在清热利湿。李时珍大量记载其外用方法——敷脐、涂搽、熏洗、取汁点眼,说明古人已经充分认识到药物外治的价值,通过皮肤黏膜吸收而取效,这在当时是相当先进的给药思路。
珍珠、石决明入肝经而明目退翳,体现了中医"肝开窍于目"的藏象理论。石决明为鲍鱼壳,与珍珠同属介类,质重沉降,能平肝潜阳而明目,至今仍是眼科常用中药的组成部分。
From a modern scientific perspective, shell-based medicinals are rich in calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and various trace elements. The calcium and collagen in tortoise shell and turtle shell provide a certain degree of nutritional support for bone metabolism. Oysters contain abundant zinc and taurine, which coincide with modern nutritional understanding of the health benefits of oysters. Pearls contain calcium carbonate and multiple amino acids, and their external application may provide a certain physical protective effect on the repair of skin and mucous membranes.
However, it must be objectively pointed out that the vast majority of the formulas recorded in this chapter lack evidence from modern evidence-based medicine. Many accounts, such as "hastening childbirth," "dead fetus in the womb," and "immediate delivery," reflect the limitations of medical conditions in ancient times. Regarding the record of tortoise shell as "toxic," modern research suggests that certain inorganic components or putrefactive products contained in tortoise shell may cause adverse reactions, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. The record of cowrie shells as "toxic" should be treated with even greater caution. The claim that crab "counteracts lacquer toxicity" also lacks modern scientific verification of its mechanism.
Particularly noteworthy is the fact that hawksbill sea turtle is an endangered species, and its trade and use are now strictly prohibited; pangolin, which appears in the "sea clam" formula, is also a first-class nationally protected animal. The use of such medicinals today involves not only medical considerations but also ecological ethics and legal issues.
