Chapter 1 of 36
黄庭内景经
In the supreme pure realm, before the Void Sovereign (Xuhuang) deity surrounded by purple mists, Taishang Sorrow Jade Dawn Lord (a venerated Daoist deity symbolizing the embodiment of the Dao) resides peacefully in the Rizhu Palace, transmitting this scripture in seven-character verse. This scripture can disperse and transform the five-element energies, enabling the myriad spirits throughout the body to be activated and transformed.
This is the inner scripture known as the Huangting (Yellow Court). When chanted with a mind as harmonized as tuned strings (qin xin san die—the lotus-"threefold" meditative state of equanimity and single-pointed focus), the fetal breath’s primal spirit (tai xian—the prenatal qi nourished through inner cultivation, as pure as an unborn child) dances with joy. Nine kinds of innate true qi shine with brightness, ascending into the clouds; beneath the “spirit-covering” brow, the eye-spirit (tongzi) emanates purple haze and mist.
This “jade book” is worthy of earnest study; chanting it ten thousand times can elevate one to the Three Pure Realms (san tian—Taiqing, Shangqing, and Yuqing). A thousand calamities are thereby dissolved, and a hundred illnesses healed; one need not fear the ferocity of tigers and wolves, and can also repulse aging, prolonging life without end.
[Translator’s note: “San hua wu xing bian wan shen” (scatter transform five forms, change myriad spirits) means through cultivation, the five-element energies are transformed so that the myriad spirits within the body each settle into their proper position and come alive; “qin xin san die” is a metaphor for a mind as harmonized as tuned strings, a threefold stacked state of stillness; “shen gai””refers to the hairline between the brows; boy”refers to the spirit of the eyes.]
This chapter serves as the general outline of the entire text, establishing from the outset the purpose of the Huangting Neijing Jing:
Sacred Origin of the Scripture: The text is attributed to the teachings of the Jade Dawn Lord of the Supreme Pure Realm, endowing it with sanctity and authority. This is a common "ascription" technique in ancient intellectual history, intended to show that this scripture is not a human fabrication but a revelation from a higher dimension.
The Idea of the Myriad Spirits Within the Body: The most fundamental concept of the Huangting Jing is that "within the human body reside myriad spirits"—each organ, each part of the body corresponds to a "spirit". "Scattering and transforming the five forms, changing the myriad spirits" means that cultivators, through chanting and meditative practice, arouse and harmonize all the spirits within, enabling the body’s miniature universe to correspond with the macrocosmic heaven and earth.
The Function of Chanting: The scripture unequivocally points out the practice of "recitation" (yongzhi)—transforming body and mind through the act of reciting the scripture itself. This is not just intellectual learning; it is a method of spiritual cultivation.
The Direction of Longevity and Rejecting Aging: “Reject old age, extend life endlessly” reveals the ultimate concern of this scripture’s practices: not seeking rebirth after death, but in this very lifetime realizing the extension of life and the enhancement of its quality.
In a contemporary context, this chapter offers at least three layers of meaning worth considering:
Rediscovery of the Body as Sacred Space 🧘
Modern individuals often treat the body as a tool—a vehicle for work, consumption, and display. The Huangting Jing reminds us: the body itself is a "sanctuary" worthy of reverence. Every organ, every meridian has its own rhythm and "intention". The rise of modern mind-body medicine—such as vagus nerve theory, gut-brain axis research—corroborates the ancients’ insight in scientific language. The body is not a machine but an intelligent life system. Respecting the body and listening to it are themselves practices.
Chanting as Attunement of the Mind 🎵
“Repetitive recitation” ("yong zhi wan guo") are not superstitions of repetition but rather an intensive training of attention. It shares common psychological mechanisms with contemporary mindfulness meditation, mantra repetition, and affirmation practice: through repeated, rhythmic vocal sound and focused intention, scattered consciousness is gathered into oneness, shifting the nervous system from stress states into reparative states.
Inner Courage in the Face of"Tigers and Wolves 🐯
“Do not fear fierceness of tigers/lions” is not an absurd claim that keeps demons at bay; it points out: when a person attains inner stability and clarity through practice, they can face external threats with equanimity. Such courage does not come from an external amulet but power inside: measured by freedom, thought not fearful. In an unpredictable present, such courage is precious.
Living and Mental Attitude ⚡
A Transformation of Perspective on the Body: Suspend thoughts intermittently throughout each day; merely feel the breath becoming the aware percept. Turn inward; quiet inner-state inquiry. —A beginning inner-Gaze consistent with the "internal yang/view" of the Huangting Jing: just to feel, sustain felt senses within the body; develop meditation on sensation.
