The time of divination is the foremost element in Da Liu Ren. As the saying goes, "What is encountered in an instant is called opportunity; what conforms naturally is called the divine." This means: the hour selected at the moment of casting the chart is precisely the convergence point of heavenly mechanism and divine subtlety. The ancients called the divination time the "Gate of the Vanguard" because, without awaiting the arrangement and calculation of the chart, it already seizes the initiative and establishes the tone for the entire reading.
If the divination time is the Wealth Star of the Day Stem, and rides upon Flourishing Qi, with auspicious spirits and excellent generals generating one another above and below, it indicates matters of wealth and property. If the divination time is the Day Horse (Postal Horse), provided it does not encounter Sky Void or fall into Emptiness, it indicates comings and goings on roads, with movement and rest both appropriate. If the divination time is the Day Noble, Day Virtue, or Day Emolument, and also carries the Wealth Star, it indicates gaining wealth through official position, or profiting through reliance on persons of rank; but if it is wrapped in punishment and murder, and the Three Transmissions show ominous generals, then it instead indicates litigation over wealth. If at this time the Three Transmissions show Azure Dragon, Six Harmonies, or Grand Constancy, forming Three Harmonies or Six Harmonies with the Day Stem, and no punishment or control is seen, then for an official it means promotion and advancement, for a scholar it means passing the examinations, for a commoner it means prevailing in official matters or receiving support from a person of distinction.
If the divination time forms a Three Harmony or Six Harmony with the Day Branch, it indicates harmonious internal matters. If the chart shows the Offspring Star riding Flourishing or Ministerial Qi and bearing auspicious spirits, it corresponds to the joy of adding a child or harmonious affairs among descendants. If the harmony carries Ghost, with Vermilion Bird or Gou Chen above, and the chart yields "Chaotic Head" (four attacks on one from below) or "Severed Lineage" (four attacks on one from above), then it indicates relatives turned to enmity, internal disputes. For an official encountering this, it indicates discord among colleagues; for a government clerk, mutual harm among peers. If the divination time simultaneously harmonizes with both the Day Stem and the Day Branch, it indicates activity both internal and external, with harmonious matters of more than one kind.
If the divination time is the Six Harms of the Day Stem, it indicates external worries; if it is the Six Harms of the Day Branch, it indicates internal worries. If the divination time falls in Emptiness, it indicates deception and unreliability; for trivial divinations, there is no benefit. If the chart shows Three Harmonies or Six Harmonies, with Six Harmonies, Empress of Heaven, Azure Dragon, and Grand Constancy above, then for any divination it indicates empty joy that ultimately fails to materialize. Only for illness and litigation are Emptiness most auspicious—for new illness, encountering Emptiness means the illness disperses; for chronic illness, Emptiness means the person perishes. This distinction must be known. In all divinations, when Emptiness is seen, matters can be accomplished after the xun period ends. Visiting someone, the person will not be seen; entrusting someone, it will be ineffective. In divining lost items, if the category spirit falls in Emptiness, it is especially difficult to recover. If the Ghost falls in Emptiness, even if there are enemies, there is nothing to fear, for Emptiness means no power. If the Day Stem itself falls into Emptiness, even if the Three Transmissions are Ghosts bearing ominous spirits above, there is no harm—if I am already empty, and they cannot see me, with whom would they contend? If in Emptiness one sees Grand Yin, it indicates deception and scheming; if one sees Dark Warrior, it indicates thieves coveting wealth.
If the divination time is the Day Tomb, and it also appears in the Three Transmissions, it indicates land disputes or matters of graves and burials. If the divination time is the Stem Clash, it indicates external movement; if it is the Branch Clash, it indicates internal movement, or matters of the household's younger members and disputes with others. If the divination time is the Day Punishment or the Day Stem's Robbery Murder, it indicates matters of coming and going that arise urgently. If the divination time is the Day Break, it indicates loss of wealth and disappearance. If the Initial Transmission is also the Day Ghost, the chart is named "Celestial Guidon"—for illness and litigation, this is most inauspicious; if the Ghost appears only in the Middle or Final Transmissions, its ferocity is somewhat moderated. If the divination time is the Day Break, with auspicious spirits above, and the chart shows Dark Warrior harmonizing with the Day Stem and acting as Wealth, then lost items may be recovered. If the divination time is the Day Break, with ominous spirits above, and the chart shows Dark Warrior whose mounted spirit controls the Wealth Star, lost items will be difficult to find. If the spirit mounted by Dark Warrior is a Ghost to the Day Stem, at Flourishing or Ministerial Qi with Punishment and Harms, it indicates thieves wounding people. If Gou Chen is controlled by Dark Warrior, it indicates the one capturing thieves will be injured. There is also the distinction of day and night times: day divination obtaining a night time—matters are shrouded in darkness, illness indicates severity, litigation indicates injustice; night divination obtaining a day time—the principle may be inferred by reversal.
The Monthly General is the Gate of Direct Affairs—that is, the zodiac position of the sun after each monthly nodal pause. Where the sun is present, the auspicious become more auspicious, and the inauspicious disperse their inauspiciousness; its efficacy is the same as Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue. If the Monthly General enters the Transmissions, its blessings are not shallow—if the spirit it rides is auspicious, benefits increase; if inauspicious, harm diminishes; even if it falls in Emptiness, it is not treated as empty. For the sun is the lord of all luminaries, governing affairs of an entire month, and cannot be emptied.
The classic says: The Day Stem is the Gate of External Affairs; the Day Branch is the Gate of Internal Affairs. In all divinations, the Stem is self, the Branch is other; Stem is external, Branch internal; Stem is movement, Branch stillness; Stem is person, Branch is dwelling; Stem is male, Branch is female. If one wishes to know advance and retreat, favorable and adverse, fortune and misfortune, prosperity and decline, one cannot but pay the deepest attention here. Extending this broadly, all things and all matters are no different.

Though the substance is thus, the application may change. Students should draw inferences from one instance and never adhere rigidly to doctrine.
Within the Four Classes, the First Class is the yang spirit of the Day, the Second Class is the yin spirit of the Day, the Third Class is the yang spirit of the Branch, and the Fourth Class is the yin spirit of the Branch. The yang spirit governs manifest outward affairs; the yin spirit governs concealed and hidden affairs. In general, the two yang classes are primary, with the yin classes secondary.
If the Four Classes are complete, affairs are upright, smooth, and easy; if incomplete, affairs are not upright, adverse, and difficult. In general, where Generation, Harmony, Virtue, Emolument, Flourishing, Ministerial are seen, pronounce auspiciousness; where Control, Harms, Punishment, Clash, Emptiness, Tomb are seen, pronounce inauspiciousness.
The Three Transmissions are the latent subtleties of the chart made manifest—the nascent sprouts of the development of affairs. Thus, the chart is the substance, the Transmissions are the function: if the Transmissions are auspicious while the chart is inauspicious, affairs ultimately turn auspicious; if the Transmissions are inauspicious while the chart lies auspicious, affairs rarely succeed.
The Initial Transmission is the Gate of Origin, corresponding to the starting point of affairs. If the Initial Transmission has spirit and general in harmony, mutually generating above and below, and encounters Virtue and Emolument, then undertaking affairs brings satisfaction, and even amidst danger, one will be saved.
The Middle Transmission is the Gate of Transition, corresponding to the transformations of affairs. If the Initial is inauspicious and the Middle auspicious, misfortune transforms into fortune; if the Initial is auspicious and the Middle inauspicious, good fortune turns to misfortune. Mother transmitting to child is favorable; child transmitting to mother is adverse. Ghost indicates the ruination of affairs, Tomb indicates their cessation, Harms indicates "breaking at the waist"—many obstructions, Break indicates mid-course abandonment, Emptiness indicates a "broken bridge"—also "breaking at the waist"—all indicate the non-completion of affairs.
The Final Transmission is the Gate of Return, corresponding to the conclusion of affairs. The activation lies in the Initial, but the determination lies in the Final—this is the most crucial point. If the Initial Transmission suffers being attacked from below, but the Final Transmission can subdue that attacker, in the end, one can turn misfortune into fortune. The Final controlling the Initial is called "the end comes to control the beginning"—it indicates traveling ten thousand li without peril, entering water without drowning, entering fire without burning, illness recuperates, calamity ceases. If Break and Harms are added, there are obstructions—both auspiciousness and inauspiciousness fail to materialize; encountering Emptiness indicates affairs without conclusion.

These are the general principles of the Three Transmissions. Students must carefully discern and choose the essential points for judgment, to avoid an error of a hair's breadth leading to ten thousand li of fallacy.
Grand Duke Tai established the Three Transmissions, placing the extreme emphasis on the Origin. The Origin is the Activation—it can sway the fortune and misfortune of the Four Classes, and its power is vast. Hence, it is discussed here in detail.

Of the Day Stem, Branch, Classes, and Transmissions, fortune and difficulty are manifest on the outside; but the virtue and vice of the Xun-Ganzang (Xun-Attached) or Yuan-Attached are hidden within. What is apparent outside is easy to see; what is hidden within is hard to perceive. Hence one must consider both.
