Privately, I believe that among all the books I have read, the Great Compendium of Da Liuren and the Liuren Guide most deserve to be regarded as authoritative standards of the art. The Compendium is comprehensive in scope but complex and diffuse, not easily accessible to the reader at first encounter; the Guide, by contrast, is terse in expression yet deep in meaning, thought-provoking in its implications. It does, however, leave much implied without detailed elaboration—pointing the way without fully developing its subtleties—leaving later students without a clear gate of entry. For this reason, I have undertaken to annotate the Guide with concise explanations, humbly incorporating my own insights, citing a small number of practical examples, and and venturing a modest effort toward clarification—hoping thereby to cast a brick that may attract a jade.
I have not yet found the true gateway into the Liuren art. I am but a simple farmer of the southern fields, my language crude and unrefined, my efforts only serving to sully the eyes of connoisseurs. There are bound to be many errors and omissions, and I respectfully request correction from the masters. This, then, is my preface.

I originally studied the craft of the examination essay, and my late father once taught me that the eight-legged essay was a beautiful skill for keeping pace with the times. One day I came upon the books of the Three Modes and learned that the art of Liuren was transmitted by the Nine Heavens Mysterious Goddess to assist the Yellow Emperor in vanquishing Chi You. Among its methods, the Liuren system is particularly intricate and refined, demanding the patient labor of nine years of solitary application before one can exhaust its sources. Whoever fully absorbs its essential marrow may nourish his nature and preserve his person; whoever applies its surplus power may anticipate the enemy and know victory in advance. Traced back over six millennia, the traditions include Jiang Ziya of the Zhou, Fan Li (Shaobo) of the state of Yue, Zhang Liang (Zifang) of the Han, and in the period from the Three Kingdoms to the present, none but Zhuge Liang of Shu-Han and Liu Ji (Qingtian) of the Ming. How could this ever be within the grasp of ordinary phrase-gatherers to achieve instant distinction in any time or place?!
In the Jiashen year of Chongzhen, Grand Preceptor Shi Yuanyang summoned me with an urgent forgeded dispatch. When the second summons arrived, I answered the call and was placed in the position of honored advisor in the Hall of Rites, before being awarded the office of judicial commissioner in the prefecture of Zhongzhou. He once presented himself before the Grand Marshal Wang Jiyu, petitioning for the implementation of military colony and grain storage policies, winning recognition and weighty responsibilities by his proposals, laboring with conspicuous success. Then, suddenly blocked by slander, his accomplishment and lofty aspirations went unfulfilled, and all who knew him grieved for him.
Afterwards, he devoted himself to the study of Liuren in reclusion, undeterred by cold of winter or heat of summer. Studying in the capital of Yan, he gained renown equal to that of the two masters Tu Songting and He Bangu. From then on, high officials and nobles came to seek his divinations with not a moment's rest; he would speak freely and spontaneously, with every utterance prevailing with mysterious accuracy. Those fond of marvels, esteeming and admiring his interpretations, compiled his predictive records into one volume, some one hundred and more entries, gathering materials in an attempt to display the broad outline of his art. In addition, he provided annotations for the Xinyin Fu and Zhiyao Fu, and, having also tested the classics of the tradition, compiled the Huidi in one fascicle, presenting them together for block-printing to extend their circulation. Along with the Xinjing, Bifa, Hubian, and Zhonghuang chapters, these works are concise yet verifiable, distilled yet far-reaching. For pointing the way along the easiest path, none surpass them. This is truly a raft over the treacherous ford, a torch for the dark of night!
