Take Yang Dun Bureau 1 as an example: the Upper Prime of the Winter Solstice, the Upper Prime of the Waking of Insects, the Middle Prime of Pure Brightness, and the Middle Prime of the Beginning of Summer all share identical structures, all belonging to Yang Dun Bureau 1. These four "primes" total twenty days. When applied to the hour-based Qimen bureau arrangement, calculated as one bureau per shi-chen, the result is not 12 × 20 = 240 bureaus, but rather 12 × 20 ÷ 4 = 60 bureaus — because each bureau repeats four times. These sixty patterns correspond precisely to all sixty combinations of the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches, from Jiazi to Guihai. It is also traditionally said that at the time of Grand Duke Jiang Tai-gong (Lü Wang), these 1080 bureaus were further simplified into seventy-two bureaus. Understanding these seventy-two bureaus is not difficult: calculated by the twenty-four solar terms, each solar term spans fifteen days, and each term is further divided into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Primes, with each prime lasting five days. Each solar term has three primes, and with twenty-four solar terms in a full year, the total number of primes is 3 × 24 = 72. Although the entire year contains 1080 bureaus, there is no need to demonstrate every bureau with a separate plate. If movable plates (active plates) are used, where each movable plate can cover the patterns of sixty shi-chen from Jiazi to Guihai, then 1080 ÷ 60 = 18. Thus, only eighteen movable plates are needed to demonstrate all the regular patterns of the entire year. These eighteen bureaus are the Nine Yang Dun Bureaus and Nine Yin Dun Bureaus ☯️.
Although designated as "Shi-jia Qimen" (Hour-based Qimen), the influence of the Day Stem must not be overlooked when arranging the bureaus. Days with different Day Stems give rise to shi-chen with different Hour Stems. For example: the Zi hour on a Jia day and a Ji day is both Jiazi; but the Zi hour on a Yi day and a Geng day is Bingzi; conversely, the Wu hour on a Jia day is Gengwu, while the Wu hour on a Ji day is Jihai. Therefore, which specific bureau each shi-chen is assigned to is simultaneously governed by the dual constraints of the solar term and the Day Stem — that is, it is necessary to determine which solar term the day of the shi-chen belongs to, and whether it falls within the Upper, Middle, or Lower Prime of that solar term.

For example: the Upper Prime of the Winter Solstice is Yang Dun Bureau 1; the two solar terms that follow the Winter Solstice are Slight Cold and Great Cold, arranged continuously in the forward (Yang-oriented) order, thus the Upper Prime of Slight Cold is Yang Dun Bureau 2 and the Upper Prime of Great Cold is Yang Dun Bureau 3.
