The volume Zangfa Dao Zhang (Methods of Burial and Inverted Staff) is traditionally attributed to Yang Yunsong of the Tang dynasty. Yang Yunsong does not appear in official historical records; only Chen Zhensun's Zhizhai Shulu Jieti records his name. The Songshi Yiwenzhi (Treatise on Arts in the History of Song) merely refers to him as "Yang Jiu Pin" (Yang the Poor-Rescuer) without detailing his life. According to geomantic tradition, Yunsong's given name was "Yi," a native of Douzhou, who held the office of celestial geomancy secretary, eventually reaching the rank of Grand Master of the Golden Splendor Palace. During the Guangming era, when Huang Chao besieged the capital, he stole the secret geomantic texts from the imperial treasury and fled, later traveling between Qianzhou. This account is baseless and unworthy of belief, yet his work has flourished widely in the world.
Hangan Jing (Canon of the Dragon-Startling Scripture) exclusively discusses mountain dragon veins and their formations, classifying them into nine stars: Greedy Wolf, Giant Gate, Lu Cun, Literary Curve, Integrity, Martial Curve, Broken Army, Left Assistant, and Right Adjutant, each with its own theoretical framework. Yilong Jing (Canon of the Doubtful Dragon) — the first chapter discusses finding branches from the trunk, emphasizing pass-gates and water-mouths; the middle chapter discusses tracing the dragon to its head and methods of recognizing front, back, facing, and welcoming formations; the final chapter discusses acupoint-embedding formations, appended with "Ten Questions on the Doubtful Dragon" to illuminate its principles. Zangfa (Burial Methods) focuses exclusively on point-embedding, presenting the theories of leaning, covering, striking, and adhering, while the "inverted staff" is divided into twelve branches, all derived from these theories. The appended method of twenty-four sand burial sites also deals with the subtlest distinctions at the point of burial.
According to Chen Zhensun's Shulu Jieti, Yilong Jing and Bianlong Jing are listed in one scroll each, described as anonymous texts recorded and given by Wu Yan; this demonstrates that in the Song dynasty these works were not attributed to Yunsong. The current attribution to him is of unknown basis. Whether the Hangan corresponds to the Bianlong cannot be verified. Nevertheless, these texts have been transmitted for ages, and their discussions of mountain-river temperaments and formations capture the essence of the subject — which explains their continued circulation. The old edition contains Li Guomu's commentary with attached diagrams, which are crude, vulgar, and worthless; all of these have now been excised to prevent confusion with the main text.

Recognizing the Supreme Polarity: At the acupoint field lies the "golden-fish water boundary." The subtle circular halo between the veiled and manifest is the "Supreme Polarity" ⭕. Above, faint waters converge; below, faint waters meet. The place of convergence is the "lesser bright hall"—a space enough for one to lie on one's side — which constitutes the acupoint. Where this circular halo exists, vital energy gathers within, hence it is a true acupoint where the marker-and-pillow align accordingly. Where no such halo exists, it is not a true acupoint. If above the halo edge one or two secondary halos appear, shaped like the crescent of the third day of the lunar month, it is called the "heavenly wheel" 🌙; when three rounds of shadows appear, it is an omen of a great burial site.
Distinguishing the Two Modes: Within the halo, a depression denotes the yin acupoint, a protrusion the yang acupoint — these are the "Two Modes." When the acupoint is placed directly on the dragon body, it is a yin dragon, suited for yang-acupoints; when a separate peak arises for the acupoint, it is a yang dragon, suited for yin-acupoints — both follow the methods of "yielding and reducing." When the upper section protrudes and the lower depresses, or the lower protrudes and the upper depresses, or when the left and right alternatively depress and protrude — this is the mutual excitation of the two energies, and one should take the point where yin and yang intermingle and where ascent and descent convene, without applying yielding or reducing.
Seeking the Four Emblems: The Four Emblems are the vein, breath, hollow, and protrusion. A vein is a subtle ridge within the halo — the emblem of Lesser Yin; breath is a subtle form within the halo — the emblem of Lesser Yang; a hollow is a subtle concavity within the halo — the emblem of Greater Yin; a protrusion is a subtle bubble within the halo — the emblem of Greater Yang. These four signs serve as foundations, and the burial responds with four methods: For the vein-acupoint, establish the base at the center; for the breath-acupoint, open and separate to establish; for the hollow-acupoint, raise and mound for the base; for the protrusion-acupoint, level and flatten to establish. ☯️

For a breath that is slow and short, use the beheading method: position the coffin near the summit, signifying cutting and breaking. For a breath neither slow nor hurried yet long, use the cutting-off method: position the coffin at the waist, signifying rending and severing. For a low breath, use the dropping method: position the coffin at the very foot, tip to head, signifying falling and dropping. These four methods serve yin dragons of high mountains.
For a narrow hollow, use the upright method: position the coffin at the center, signifying centered correctness. For a wide hollow, use the seeking method: position the coffin toward the energy, signifying search and pursuit. For a deep hollow, use the shelving method: position the coffin above the energy, raising it on pillars at the four corners, signifying resting aloft. For a shallow hollow, use the folding-cutting method: measure the vein to position the coffin, half-depth, half-shallow, signifying proportion and adjustment. For a solitary protrusion, use the pressing method: position the coffin against the solid, signifying pressing and squeezing. For a doubled protrusion, use the combining method: position the coffin at the shorter one, signifying merging and uniting. For a squarely confronting protrusion, use the slanting method: position the coffin obliquely aside, signifying skew and askew. For a deviant protrusion, use the inserting method: align and set straight the coffin, signifying planting and inserting. These four methods serve yin dragons of level ground.
The Covering Method: Covering signifies sheltering — as a joined basin's form. The covering vein arises from the KUN quarter and appears in the QIAN; the covering technique in turn applies from QIAN to KUN. In this, the mystery of re-engendering is preserved, and the essence of heaven and earth is made manifest. When the crest is shallow below this method departs — never neglect. Careless application risks injury. Cover small upon great and the primordial energy suffers; cover great upon small and the living energy is sealed off; cover above what is below detaches the incoming ether; cover below what is above loses the resting ether; cover right where left is applies harm through those layers; cover left where right obtains receives the cold ether. Should all the subtleties of dragon and abode be fathomed, disaster still arrives from without. As the text says: “Crest shallow, discard the cover” — meaning abandon the method, not stand from high to low nor perch from elevated to humble. This pertains to placement-adaptation; that to site adaptation — their significance differs though technique remains congruent. Slight deviation yields no result.
The Adhering Method: Adhering means neighboring-attachment — as one cleaves to favor received. The adhering vein comes and stops at its point of rest; the adhering method moves from that rest to its extremity. Submission and reception preserve the transforming intention that converges here. A thin lower foundation cannot adhere. Divergence in principle runs as far as opposite poles. Adhere above-on-below and the influx departs; adhere below-on-high and violent energies intrude. Adhere right-when-left befits or be led toward fatigue; adhere left-when-right applies whether resting energies flow. Although both outer garb may ease, embarrassment hovers intangible. "Where thin, nothing adheres" — abandon the spot, not trade base for height nor forsake the upper for nether. If with good reason the adhesive coheres, even towering over expansive rivers and seas, no obstruction spreads. Why then contend inevitably lest thin places spurn cohesion?
The Leaning Method: Leaning suggests support and embrace — dwelling within that embrace. The leaning vein, dropping from above, imposes downward; these are applied from quirk gently alongside square-even orthodoxy; enveloping support exists whenever leaning’s form proceeds — mutation-chaos visibly recurs unforced alongside obviousness! If leaning’s weight compensates some gap and maybe also renders low aspects defective, leaning left amid others to reflect harsh or hollow degrees misconstrued — result in spiritual waste; posturing both embued even if exotic may disturb enmities betoken certain ill encounters eventually; although this resembles circumadjacent apposition closely — adjacency surfaces evenness over gaps, simple apt alignment steed the meridians themselves in evincing course — mystical systems indeed hidden under quiescence: realization thus belongs to those gowned in true perspicacity even withholding intervention elsewhere!
