Chapter 9 of 10
阳宅十书
The principles of selection in Yang dwelling construction are extremely complex. This chapter only records the parts directly related to construction. As for the chapters on Sui Xian, Shen Ji, Gui Zang, etc., these are separately found in the selection section and will not be repeated here.
If form and configuration are the "body" of a Yang dwelling, then selection is its "function." Even if both the interior and exterior forms of a dwelling are excellent and the construction methods are flawless, if the prohibitions of spirits and baleful influences are violated, misfortune will manifest immediately—this cannot be taken lightly. Therefore, "Selection" is listed as the ninth treatise.
For all selection, one must first calculate the Five Spirits Before the Life (Ming Qian Wu Shen).
| Heavenly Stem | Spirit Name | Auspicious/Inauspicious | Manifestation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia-Yi | Azure Dragon | Auspicious | Auspicious omens |
| Bing-Ding | Ming Xi (Bright Joy) | Auspicious | Festive celebrations |
| Wu-Ji | Warehouse | Auspicious | Granaries overflowing with grain |
| Ren-Gui | Thief | Inauspicious | Attracts thieves, injures livestock |
| Geng-Xin | White Tiger | Inauspicious | Mourning and funerals |
| Birth Year Branch | Five Spirit Position | Birth Year Branch | Five Spirit Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi | Si | Wu | Hai |
| Chou | Wu | Wei | Zi |
| Yin | Wei | Shen | Chou |
| Mao | Shen | You | Yin |
| Chen | You | Xu | Mao |
| Si | Xu | Hai | Chen |
Illustrative Example: When Tai Sui falls in a Jia-Yi year, the Five Tigers Method starts from Bing-Yin. If a person is born in the Zi year, the Five Spirit position is at Si. In a Jia-Yi year, the遁 (hidden stem calculation) up to the Si position yields Ji-Si, which places the Wu-Ji Warehouse Spirit in command—favorable for construction, manifesting in full granaries. If a person is born in the Chou year, the Five Spirit is at Wu. In the same year, the遁 yields Geng-Wu, which is the White Tiger Spirit, indicating mourning and funerary matters—unfavorable for construction.
When Tai Sui falls in a Geng year, the Five Tigers Method starts from Wu-Yin. For a person born in the Xu year, the Five Spirit is at Mao. The遁 yields Ji-Mao, which is the Warehouse Spirit—greatly favorable for construction.
When Tai Sui falls in a Bing-Xin year, the Five Tigers Method starts from Geng-Yin. For a person born in the Si year, the Five Spirit is at Xu. The遁 yields the Bing-Ding Ming Xi Spirit, indicating great joyful omens. Other cases follow the same pattern of inference. 🔥
In Jia-Yi years, Bing leads the sequence; in Yi-Geng years, Wu takes the head. In Bing-Xin years, seek from Geng upward; in Ding-Ren years, follow the flow forward. In Wu-Gui years, where does it begin? Above Jia-Yin, one may well discern.
Determining the Nine Palace dwelling means calculating the Fixed Life Palace (Ding Sheng Gong). Begin from the Shang, Zhong, Xia Yuan within the auspicious elements.
Case Example: In the Shang Yuan Jia-Zi year, the household head, born in Wu-Xu, belongs to the Zhen palace. Starting from Kun and retreating five palaces to Dui, this becomes the Fixed Life Palace.
In the Shang Yuan Jia-Zi year, the household matriarch, born in Bing-Wu, belongs to the Kun palace. Starting from Kan and retreating five palaces to Qian, this becomes the Fixed Life Palace. Only after determining the Fixed Life Palace can one discuss the Annual Transformation of the Wandering Year.
The method: Both male and female begin counting years from the Dui palace, starting with the number 10. Males proceed forward: Kan takes 20, Zhen takes 30, Li takes 40—each remaining individual year advances one palace. Females proceed backward: Li takes 20, Zhen takes 30, Kan takes 40—each remaining year retreats one palace per year. Counting until the age falls into its corresponding palace, then combining with the trigram received from the Fixed Life Palace of the natal chart yields the governing trigram of the Wandering Year.
Male Case: Born in the Shang Yuan Wu-Xu year, at the Ji-Chou year the person is fifty-two years old (counting age from one). Start from Dui with 10, Kan 20, Zhen 30, Li 40, return to Dui 50, Qian 51, Kan 52. The Wu-Xu male has the Fixed Life Palace at Dui, so the sequence from Dui: Dui (Fuwei/Residence), Sheng (Vitality), Huo (Harm), Yan (Extended), Jue (Severance), Liu (Six Baleful), Wu (Five Ghosts), Tian (Heavenly Physician). Since 52 falls on Kan, it is the Harm-and-Misfortune year, unfavorable for construction.
Female Case: Born in the Shang Yuan Bing-Wu year, at the Ji-Chou year while aged forty-four. Dui takes 10, Li 20, Zhen 30, Kan 40, Qian 41, Dui 42, Kun 43, Li 44. The Bing-Wu female has the Fixed Life Palace at Qian, so the sequence from Qian: Qian (Residence), Liu, Tian, Wu, Huo, Jue, Yan, Sheng. Since 44 falls on Li, it is the Severed-Life year, unfavorable for construction.
| Transformed Trigram | Auspicious/Inauspicious | Manifestation |
|---|---|---|
| Heavenly Physician | Auspicious | One year within produces accomplished scholars and those who attain official emoluments |
| Vitality | Auspicious | Flourishing population, wealth from sheep and horses |
| Extended | Auspicious | Festive joyful event within 280 days |
| Residence | Auspicious | Escaped persons return home |
| Six Baleful | Inauspicious | Brings death; all affairs unlucky after one year |
| Five Ghosts | Inauspicious | Weeping mourning matters within 200 days; greatly inauspicious |
| Severed Life | Inauspicious | After two years harms the middle son; official calamity and death |
| Harm and Misfortune | Inauspicious | Misfortunes within one year; livestock loss and wealth damage |
When the original palace transforms back upon itself, it is called Residence. The classic states: "Vitality, Extended Years, and Residence—Heavenly Physician on four directions, favorable for labor."
This method matches the Minor Cycle example. Males proceed forward, females backward in calculating annual cycles, enumerating one by one among the Twelve Spirits in successive order:
| Twelve Spirits | Inauspicious/Auspicious Fortune | Construction Guidance |

Sequence continues: Tian Guang (Chen), Tai Yi (Si), Sheng Guang (Wu), Xiao Ji (Wei), Chuan Song (Shen), Cong Kui (You), He Kui (Xu), Deng Ming (Hai), Shen Hou (Zi), Da Ji (Chou), Gong Cao (Yin), Tai Chong (Mao).
Hierarchy of Priority Principle: Large-scale renovations and structural modifications correspond to the ancient "main hall and principal chamber" and should be timed with caution; partial interior changes correspond to "minor room repairs" and may allow greater flexibility.
Avoiding Conflict Periods: The original text emphasizes "avoiding direct clashes with the household head's natal chart"—this can be modernized as: avoid undertaking major construction projects during periods when family members are at low points in life (serious illness, career crises, emotional turbulence). When people make major decisions while in poor condition, they often neglect one thing for another.
Operational Recommendations for Auspicious Day Selection: If one does not use the traditional system of stellar deities, one can establish one's own "day-selection checklist"—
Validation through the "Hypothesis–Action–Review" Method: If a particular day is chosen for groundbreaking, one can record family changes (such as finances, health, and relationships) over a period afterward, thereby building a personal "day-selection database." Through repeated validation, one gradually develops a body of time-selection experience suited to oneself.
Modern Transformation of the Yearly Shift Cycle (You Nian Bian Zhai): Judgments such as "shifting to Tian Yi governs academic attainment" can be transformed into attention to the focal points of family fortune in different years. One year may favor study and further education, another may favor consolidation and restraint—this awareness of "annual themes" still holds reference value in personal and family planning.
The Sanctification of Time and the Ordering of Space. This chapter incorporates time (year, month, day, hour) into a refined coordinate system of stellar deities, tightly coupled with the spatial system of the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams. Behind this lies a profound philosophical conviction: the universe is a continuous symbolic field saturated with meaning, and all human actions must remain in harmony with this field. Building or renovating a house is not merely a material activity but a participation in, and adjustment of, cosmic order.
The Semiotic Significance of the "Five Spirits Before the Mandate." The Five Spirits divide the Heavenly Stems into five groups, corresponding to different facets of fortune and misfortune: the Azure Dragon governs auspicious omens, the Bright Joy governs joy, the Warehouse governs wealth, the Thief governs loss, and the White Tiger governs mourning and death. These symbols are essentially a classificatory management of humanity's fundamental existential anxieties—security, wealth, emotion, life and death. The ancients used this symbolic system to convert uncontrollable fate into a procedure that could be calculated, circumvented, and selected.
The Way of Conformity and Reversal. The design whereby males go in the conforming direction and females in the reversing direction is not purely a matter of gender discrimination. In the logic of Yijing philosophy, "conforming" and "reversing" represent the different directions of movement of yin and yang qi. Yang is associated with the male, who moves in conformity with Heaven; yin is associated with the female, who moves in reversal of Heaven. Yet it is worth reflecting: does this "conforming and reversing" genuinely correspond to the different life rhythms of men and women in actual life? Or is it merely a mechanical mapping based on cultural presuppositions? A modern perspective of gender equality should maintain critical awareness of this.
Contemporary Implications of the "Substance–Function" Relationship. The proposition "configuration/situation is the substance; choice/timing is the function" remains deeply applicable today. The success of any undertaking ultimately depends on the solidity of the "substance"—construction quality, design level, functional utility. Time selection can optimize conditions but cannot substitute for substantive quality. If the "substance" is improper, no matter how refined the "function," it is but a castle in the air. This reminds us: do not fall into the formalism of day-selection while neglecting the quality of construction itself. 📐
Chapter Summary: The art of date selection for yang-residence construction begins with the household head's natal chart, determines auspicious direction-deities through the "Five Spirits Before the Mandate," defines favorable palaces through "Nine Palace House Building," derives annual fortune through "Wandering Year House Shifts," distinguishes broadly or narrowly favorable years through "Annual Travels' Building Houses," and ultimately culminates in the auspicious and taboo days for various construction stages: breaking ground for commencement, laying foundations, cutting wood, positioning plinths, erecting columns, raising ridgepoles, roofing, and plastering walls. This constitutes a complete decision-making chain from macro-level annual diagnosis to micro-level daily scheduling, embodying the traditional ideal of "the harmony of Heaven's timing, earthly advantage, and human unity" in construction practice. 🏠
