On Water 🌊
Water comes from heaven; its nature is active, belonging to the Qian trigram, and it is yang. The response of fortune and misfortune is most swift. Therefore, the ancients, when discussing burial methods, placed equal emphasis on the dragon vein and the water method.
When discussing the cuo method (temporary shallow burial), the water method is exclusively emphasized, because temporary graves do not draw upon the earth's vital energy but only the heavenly energy, and thus they respond readily and bring wealth. But the way of heaven is vigorous and ceaseless—what comes quickly also goes quickly. Therefore, in formal interment, the dragon vein is primary, though the water method remains equally crucial.
The books on water methods in this world are numerous and chaotic, with no consensus to be found. I have received the transmitted method of Master White Crane, and was further guided by the immortal master Green-Robed Disciple of Master Qiu's school. With clear instruction, the essential principles of form, direction, Najia, Former Heaven and Latter Heaven, pure yin and pure yang, and the good and ill fortune of liqi all became clear in my mind.
In all cases, form is the first principle. Should one encounter waters that fly aslant or rush directly, even if they accord with liqi and occupy auspicious directions, calamity in the end cannot be avoided. Hence one knows that the sinuous and meandering (winding and looping back) is the highest pattern.
Water and sha (surrounding ridges) are by nature inseparable. Where water meanders, the sha embrace; where water departs straight, the sha turn rigid; where water flies aslant, the sha scatter. Where water impinges upon the front, back, left, or right of the acupoint, disaster manifests immediately. Those who practice this art should first select waters of good form to receive, and avoid waters of ominous shape. Then, coordinating with liqi methods and directional discernment, they neutralize and absorb through orientation of the grave—then good fortune prevails without exception, and calamity cannot intrude.
The Water Method 💧
In geomancy, the first priority is the careful examination of the dragon body—the word "careful" is most exquisite. Distinguish meticulously the strength or weakness, deflection or correctness, and the flourishing or withering states of the dragon's momentum. Slanted and sideways protrusions are not true dragons. On refined and elegant mountain peaks, ethereal energy naturally congeals. What is refined is naturally beautiful; where energy congeals, fortune naturally follows. There are also cases of acupoints forming in flat plains, where still, deep waters shaped like moth eyebrows are most intimate and agreeable.
The mundane world wrangles endlessly in dispute, yet when traced to their roots, fortune and calamity ultimately have no reliable basis. Little do they know that beautiful water and bright ridges make good ground—who then recognizes that dissolving ridges and receiving water must be sought through method?
Water beauty means that the water either stills in pools, or embraces in curves, or pays homage in layered ranks; moreover, the incoming water is great and the outgoing water small, the incoming flow long and the outgoing flow short. Only the approach is seen, no departure visible, and there is no sign of turbidity or mixture. Bright ridges mean that the peaks open in clarity and freshness, their aspect inclining with intimacy—when the acupoint is low, the ridge-head bends down; when the acupoint is high, the ridge-head looks up in regard. The action between hole and ridge is like host and guest seated in conversation, with solicitous tone and smiling countenance.
Where ridges rise not much more than one zhang in height, and lie no more than two xun (one xun being eight chi) from the acupoint—this speaks of the blue dragon and white tiger ridges on the two flanks. If the ridge feet are upright and correct, the heads rounded and clean, the bodies moist and glossy, possessing an earnest and gentle bearing, fortune will arrive within half a cycle. The forty-two characters beginning with "where ridges..." are each one a secret. In sum, when one stands within the acupoint and can see both the heads and feet of the ridges, their power is supremely weighty.
The first, against-coming water is best of all—places that yield speedy fortune often have water arriving against the prevailing direction. Next is transverse-crossing water, where the force of the water stills and pools; with an appropriate ridge to arrest and enclose it, fortune follows. People often say great sites are mostly along-shore formations (shun ju), but if the first generation is poor, how can that rescue? If one obtains a single facing-sheet ridge tightly stretched across, that too is commendable.
Ridge and water have their orders of influence: the ridge responds slowly, while water circulates quickly. Often one sees a fine blue dragon ridge but an evil water on the right flowing languidly on—then water takes charge first (and calamity answers). Between facing mountains and the principal mountain there is no special felicity from ridges; the second son seems disadvantaged. At second generation, the second son inherits the lineage. Where the eldest son's line ends, the second son carries on.
Streams, ravines, rivers, and lakes are naturally water; but fields, ponds, and marshes also count as water. Where the hall is level and low, the ridges take effect; with slight winding turns, water acts first.
The dragon is the root; water is the functioning instrument—between the two, there is no question of greater or lesser weight. When seeking the dragon to fixed the acupoint, water comes first: the essential transmission is fully set forth here.
People all treat dragon, acupoint, ridge, and water as the four utilities of geomancy; and among the four, the dragon is singled out as first. Why? The dragon is the root. Therefore one must always observe the dragon. If there is a true dragon, there will inevitably be a true acupoint. Where the acupoint knots, the ridges must embrace. Where the ridges embrace, the waters must assemble. With a true dragon and a precise acupoint, ridge and water follow naturally. The essence of site appraisal is fully spoken in these few phrases.
Geomantic practice from ancient times distinguishes four utilities, the first being the dragon's weight. Fortune and misfortune, blessing and calamity arise from this, and true conditions demand discernment. The dragon governs only terrestrial energy—whether warm or cold—and cannot determine fortune or calamity by itself, for its nature is quiescent. Ridges and waters partake of heavenly energy. If people receive them well, good fortune results; if poorly, disaster follows—for their nature is active. Thus the Book of Changes says: "Good fortune, ill fortune, regret, and remorse arise from movement."
Someone may object: "The dragon is also perpetually moving. Of the twenty-four dragons, whatever head enters, sometimes it turns toward Qian, at others turns to Kun; sometimes entering Gen, and then suddenly facing Xun—how can it be said not to move? Ridges and waters also have their stillness: with Xun ridge serving at the flank it is eternal Xun, never seen changing into Bing; with You water arriving from the west it is eternal You—never is it observed turning into Chen. In this way ridges and waters are also still."
Elder Tuo replied: Among the twenty-four dragons, observe the dragon progressing sinuously, until its head enters at Hai, then it rests at Hai; enters at Mao, then rests at Mao—is this not stillness? As for ridges and waters, they shift and transform without bound. The very same Mao dragon will have ridges and waters presenting themselves at the Qian-Hai quarter in some cases and at the Bing-Wu quarter in others. The very same Bing dragon will in some places see ridges and waters converging at the Chou-Gen quarter—is this not movement hard to confine? Precisely because it moves and resists confinement, there arise preferences and aversions within it. What is favored yields good fortune and blessing; what is shunned brings calamity—such is the principle of things.
Terrestrial energy moves as guided by the dragon; heavenly energy moves as guided by ridges and waters. Heaven bestows and earth receives; the husband sings and the wife follows—this is the unchanging principle. Thus one knows that among the four, the dragon is the root.
But since the dragon is said the root, why is the water method set forth after dragon, acupoint, and ridge? Because water is the essential method of dragon-seeking. The ancients said: "Qi is the mother of water; water is the child of qi." Incoming water can guide the dragon's movement; boundary water can arrest the stalwart dragon. As the spring run has length or brevity, the dragon's distance or nearness can be deduced; as the water force has size or smallness, the dragon's trunk or branch may be distinguished. Watching the returning bends of the water clarifies host–guest relations between facing mountains and the acupoint. Observing the coming and going of flows reveals the compliance or opposition between dragon and ridge.
Before looking at mountains, first look at water. Where the true dragon descends, water must assemble. Where the true acupoint is formed, water simply that upon seeking land, water is chief.
Water has form and momentum, and the method of reading water follows in detail below. There are also mountain heads within water—where there is a winding stream, there are winding ridges. But only through wending channels. Thus it can be seen that water's movement is settled among those formations where mountain and water interplay. Though we stress "where the true dragon falls, waters collect; where true holes knot, waters embrace," two lines, they fully unlock the opening of the eyes.
In discerning water, one must discuss the confluence—only with both divide and confluence is the acupoint without error. When all converges—in front, in back, or at the two sides—the vital energy ceases, and bound by the crossing meridians of water, the acupoint settles.
The confluence of water has three grades:
