Chapter 1 of 3
玉尺经
When the cosmos first emerged from chaos, the Supreme Ultimate (Taiji) differentiated, establishing the foundations of the Two Appearances (Yin and Yang). The dual energies of Yin and Yang permeate heaven and earth, each following its own path of forward and reverse motion. 🌱
Yang resides on the left, Yin on the right. The mountain dragon paths diverge into two routes: the Yang dragon follows a forward course while the Yin dragon follows a reverse course. Yet tracing back to their origins, both energies arise from the same source. The Yin energy of the earth requires Yang to come forward in response; the Yang energy of heaven requires Yin to echo back. This mutual resonance mirrors the principle of husband-wife harmony and domestic concord.
Therefore, when Yin and Yang intersect, the Yang energy pours downward, bestowing vitality; when Yang and Yin intersect, the Yin energy rises upward, receiving and gathering. The Heavenly Root (the gateway of Yang energy's emergence) reveals the myriad wonders of transformation; the Lunar Cavern (the pivot of Yin energy's condensation) unlocks the mechanism of profound and subtle change.
In the operation of principle (li qi): the stems Yi and Bing converge and trend toward the Xu position; Xin and Ren converge and gather at the Chen position; Dou Niu (the Chou palace) receives the energy of Ding and Geng; Jin Yang (the Wei palace) gathers the spirit of Gui and Jia. Thus, Yi, Xin, Ding, and Gui—these Yin stems—serve as the "wife" and should be matched with Jia, Geng, Bing, and Ren—these Yang stems—as the "husband." Each Yin and Yang obtains its proper counterpart; husband and wife unite, female and male maintain order, stallion and mare rest in harmony.
If Yin encounters Yang but they are not of the same kind nor proper matches, this is called Yang Deviation. If Yang encounters Yin but it is not its rightful partner, this is termed Yin Error. This resembles a husband and wife who happen to meet on the road—even if forcibly united, harmony can never be achieved. Conversely, if they are kinsmen of the same family (of the same kind and proper pairing), even slight strength yields practical effect.
When two females dwell together (pure Yin without Yang), solitary Yin cannot give birth; when two males coexist (pure Yang without Yin), isolated Yang cannot nurture. If Yin meets Yang but their union becomes excessive and rampant, it instead becomes calamity; if Yang meets Yin but their union is deficient and weakened, it is wasted without effect.
The transformation and cultivation of all things are rooted in the Dragon System (the movement of mountain energy). Prosperity and decline depend on the resonance and coordination of circumstances. Therefore, when the left route proceeds from the Hai-Zi direction, the right route returns from the Zi-Hai direction; the energies of growth and prosperity operate in mutual alternation, and the mysterious apertures communicate with one another. Only genuine matches can achieve completion—do not delight in union with siblings (those of the same kind and close kinship).
Thus Duke Zhou established ritual laws, clarifying domestic institutions, to distinguish between male and female; marrying those of different surnames, to rectify the relationship between husband and wife. This is the natural principle of heaven and earth, and the inherent law governing the operation of principle (li qi).
As for the Heavenly Gate (the Heaven Gate direction) opening the source of wealth and fortune, and the Earthly Axis (the Earth Door direction) dredging the practical effects of transformation—its method reveals the wonder of Xuan Kong (Mysterious Emptiness), its divine functions immeasurable and unfathomable.
The energy of the Five Elements is indeed tied to the mountain dragon's course; fortune and misfortune must be discerned from the waterways. When the mountain dragon regards me favorably, encircling and embracing me again and again, it shelters like an official or elder; yet its giving and taking are inherently without intention—how could it deliberately assist? The principles of generating-entering and controlling-entering reveal that affections, once departed, seem to linger once more.
Observing heaven and earth, assisting in transformation and nurture—none of this exceeds this single principle; reversing creation, altering fate and destiny—how marvelous is its technique! The most subtle of Great Ways—only sages can attain this realm. Unless one possesses wisdom and insight, who can truly understand its mystery?
Auspicious lands are each reserved for those who accumulate virtuous deeds; inauspicious lands are often bestowed upon the wicked and depraved. When precious grounds are granted to undeserving persons, the celestial spirits are united in their wrath. ⚡
This chapter, "The Subtle Manifestation Rhapsody," is the opening summation of the Yuchi Jing (Jade Ruler Classic). Its core philosophy can be condensed into three layers:
I. Yin-Yang Intercourse as the Fundamental Principle The text follows a logical thread of "Supreme Ultimate → Two Appearances → Yin-Yang → Intercourse → Transformation," attributing the generation and transformation of all things in heaven and earth to the interaction of the two vital energies. Within the feng shui context, the relationship between mountain dragons (Yin) and water (Yang), the pairing of male and female (ci-xiong), and the matching of stems and branches must all follow the principle of resonance: "Yin uses Yang to come forward; Yang uses Yin to respond." Solitary Yin cannot generate; isolated Yang cannot nurture. Yin and Yang must be properly matched, not incorrectly paired.
II. The Three Harmonies and Four Great Bureaus as the Framework of Li Qi The passage "Yi and Bing intersect and trend toward Xu; Xin and Ren converge and gather at Chen; Dou Niu receives the energy of Ding and Geng; Jin Yang gathers the spirit of Gui and Jia" establishes the basic framework of the Four Great Water Outlets in Three Harmonies (Sanhe) feng shui: Yi-Bing meeting and trending to Xu (Fire Bureau), Xin-Ren converging at Chen (Water Bureau), Dou Niu receiving Ding-Geng energy (Metal Bureau), and Jin Yang gathering Gui-Jia spirit (Wood Bureau). These four statements unify the Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, and water outlet directions into a complete system of li qi analysis.
III. Ethical Constraints of Virtue Aiding Heaven and Earth "Fortunate lands are each reserved for those who accumulate virtue; unfortunate lands are often bestowed upon the wicked and depraved" directly links geographic fortune or misfortune to human moral character, indicating that ancient feng shui was not a purely technical system, but carried strong ethical and moral connotations. True precious grounds will only favor those of virtue. 🌱
The Essence of Yin-Yang Intercourse Is Harmonious Symbiosis From a contemporary perspective, "Yin uses Yang to come forward; Yang uses Yin to respond" describes a systemic complementary relationship. In modern terms, this can be understood as: any system—whether natural ecology, social organization, or personal life—requires forces of different natures to balance and cooperate. In home layout, the Yin quality of stillness (bedrooms, studies) and the Yang quality of activity (living rooms, activity areas) require reasonable configuration; in urban environments, the balance between mountain (Yin) and water (Yang) directly affects regional comfort and livability. 🔥🌊
The Four Great Bureaus and Correspondence to Ecological Geography The Four Great Bureaus theory, including "Yi and Bing intersect and trend toward Xu," is essentially a pattern recognition system that ancient people derived from observing the relationship between water current directions and terrain features. In contemporary terms, this resembles a kind of "environmental pattern language": the matching relationship between confluence points of different water flows (water outlets) and terrain undulations does indeed influence groundwater direction, wind patterns, solar exposure, and other practical factors. Understanding the Four Bureaus as an ancient environmental impact assessment model is far more reasonable than treating them as mysterious forces. ⛰️
The Contemporary Significance of Virtue-Aided Lands The philosophy that "fortunate lands are each reserved for those who accumulate virtue" finds its transformative meaning in contemporary society thus: the acquisition and maintenance of good environmental resources—whether residential locations, office spaces, or public places—requires a sense of responsibility from both individuals and collectives. Development activities lacking social responsibility ultimately lead to environmental degradation—is this not the modern version of "unfortunate lands bestowed upon the wicked and depraved"? 🌍
| Application Scenario | Traditional Principle | Modern Transformation |
|---|---|---|
| Residential Site Selection | Yin-Yang intercourse; mountain embracing and water encircling | Pay attention to balance of light, ventilation, humidity; avoid purely Yin (damp, sunless) or purely Yang (blazing, unshaded) environments |
| Spatial Layout | Clear distinction between female and male; proper pairing brings good fortune | Differentiate functional spaces by nature: activity zones (living rooms, kitchens) and quiet zones (bedrooms, studies) arranged reasonably, avoiding intermingling |
| Environmental Assessment | Water outlet orientation and dragon vein course | Pay attention to the relationship between local water flow, road directions, and building orientation; evaluate ventilation and sightline conditions |
| Ecological Ethics | Accumulating virtue to obtain auspicious land | Environmental choices and maintenance should incorporate social responsibility; reject overdevelopment and destructive utilization |
Actionable Recommendations:
Yin-Yang Intercourse and the Unity of Opposites The opening lines of The Subtle Manifestation Rhapsody—"When the Supreme Ultimate divided, the Two Appearances were established"—directly inherit the cosmic generative theory of the Yi Zhuan (Commentary on the I Ching). Notably, however, it does not rest at the level of "division" but emphasizes "intercourse"—Yin and Yang are not static opposites but in dynamic mutual seeking. "Yin uses Yang to come forward; Yang uses Yin to respond" reveals an existential interdependence: the meaning and function of either party depend on the response of the other. This resonates deeply with the "interdependence" principle of modern ecology and the concept of "intersubjectivity" in social philosophy.
The Orderly View of "Proper Matching" vs. "Deviation and Error" The text repeatedly emphasizes that encountering something "not of its kind" or "not its rightful match" results in "Yang Deviation" or "Yin Error." This emphasis on boundaries of order reflects the ancient mind's respect for "natural classification." Philosophically, this suggests: harmony arises not from arbitrary combination but from associations befitting each thing's essential nature. This can provoke reflection on modern society's "over-connection" — not all connections hold value; mismatched connections instead create attrition. 🤔
"Heavenly Gate and Earthly Axis" and the Awareness of Finitude The imagery of "The Heavenly Gate opens the source of wealth; the Earthly Axis dredges the rationale of transformation" suggests: intermediary gaps between heaven and earth contain certain key nodal points (apertures) that determine the operational efficiency of the entire system. Philosophically, this implies a recognition of finitude—not everything is uniformly distributed across space; rather, key nodes and pivotal junctures exist. This way of thinking offers inspiration for modern resource allocation, urban planning, and even personal energy management. 🌱
| Concept | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Three Harmonies, Four Great Bureaus | The central framework of feng shui li qi (principle-energy) theory, integrating Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, and water outlets into four Bureaus: Fire (Yi-Bing joining to Xu), Water (Xin-Ren gathering at Chen), Metal (Ding-Geng received by Dou Niu), Wood (Gui-Jia gathered by Jin Yang) |
| Xuan Kong | An advanced system in feng shui li qi theory centered on space-time transformation, emphasizing the combined effect of orientation and time |
| Heavenly Gate and Earthly Axis | The Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door—key directional nodes for incoming water and outgoing water, regarded as portals of wealth and transformation |
| Yang Deviation / Yin Error | Two types of incorrect Yin-Yang pairing: when Yin meets Yang but they are not of the same category (Yang Deviation); when Yang sees Yin but it is not its rightful match (Yin Error) |
| Ci-Xiong / Pin-Mu | Anthropomorphized expressions of Yin-Yang relations in feng shui, emphasizing natural order and principles of pairing |
| Dragon System (Long Jia) | The system of mountain range directions and terrestrial energy flow—a core subject of shi (form) feng shui |
| Water Outlet (Shui Kou) | The critical location where water departs or converges, believed to control the spreading and gathering of vital energy (qi) |
Environmental Psychology Perspective: Contemporary researchers compare the feng shui principles of "mountain enclosing, water embracing" and "Yin-Yang interaction" with the "prospect-refuge theory" in environmental psychology. They find that traditional feng shui preferences for "backed by mountains, open before the Bright Hall" closely correspond with security preferences developed during human evolution—backside sheltering provides a sense of security, while open front provides access to information.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Application: Some scholars use GIS technology to analyze distribution patterns of the traditional feng shui "Four Great Water Outlets," discovering that their site-selection principles statistically correlate with regional hydrological features, terrain gradients, solar angles, and other natural factors—demonstrating that the ancients' empirical wisdom included systematic observation of environmental elements.
Ecological Ethics Connections: The thought of "virtue enabling auspicious land," reflecting the principle of "virtue matched with environment," engages in a cross-temporal dialogue with contemporary theories of environmental justice—the distribution of environmental resources should consider ethical dimensions, and should not simply be dominated by technological or capital dictates. 🌍
