Master Xiyi (Chen Tuan) states his purpose at the outset: The inferential system of Zi Wei Dou Shu parallels the I Ching's arrangement of the eight trigrams. Just as the eight trigrams cannot be understood without the Commentary on the Judgments (Tuan Ci), how can one begin to apply the star influences without first explaining them?
Therefore, those who study Dou Shu must repeatedly examine the pivot between movement and stillness, and first and foremost distinguish the boundary between host and guest. Movement and stillness form an unbroken cycle that revolves without end; host and guest alternate without rigid constraint. 🔥
If the host star is without feeling, how can the guest star respond? If the guest star cannot respond, what is there to be gained from it?
It is lamentable that Yang (Ram) and Tuo (Blade), the two lesser aggressors, only shift according to the likes and dislikes of Lu Cun (Salary Governor). When they enter the palaces of Tai Yang (Sun) and Tai Yin (Moon), one must also weigh the rise and fall of Tian Kong (Sky Void) and Di Jie (Earth Tramp). Qi Sha (Seven Killings) carries a killing aura, but if no execution star is added, its destructive force may still be redeemed. The execution star (Yang/Tuo/or other punitive influences) standing alone without support makes it impossible to truly conquer an opponent for life. Mars (Huo Xing) dwelling in a thriving palace should be assessed as a wealth destiny; if Yang and Tuo gain seasonal advantage, how can they universally be judged inauspicious? 🌊
Harassment from the two neighboring palaces can still be withstood; scheming hidden within the same palace is the hardest to guard against. A sliver of fire can burn the Tian Ma (Heavenly Horse); a heavy ram can drive away Lu Cun. Jie Kong (Tramp and Void) make family bonds thin and comings and goings irregular; Quan Lu (Power and Salary) make conduct and concealment unpredictable, ever shifting. Tian Kui and Tian Yue may be called gentlemen; Yang (Ram) and Ling Xing (Bell) are like petty men. Not all inauspicious stars are entirely inauspicious, nor are auspicious stars purely auspicious. When the host star is strong and the guest star weak, safety is assured; when the host star is weak and the guest star strong, danger immediately manifests. The gains and losses of host and guest must be weighed mutually; the major/minor limits and the Life/Self palaces should be cross-referenced.
The Life Palace and Self Palace most resent the presence of Yang, Tuo, and Qi Sha; encountering them inevitably brings misfortune. The Major and Minor Limits extremely avoid Qi Sha, Po Jun, Ju Men, and Tan Lang; encountering them surely brings calamity. When the Life Palace meets Tian Kui and Wen Chang, one often receives support from noble persons; when the limits encounter Zi Wei and Tian Fu, wealth is surely abundant. 💰
In all examinations of women's charts, first look at the Husband Palace and Children Palace. If these hold killing stars, she may marry three times yet still be dissatisfied; if they hold Yang or Tuo, although she weeps, her tears do not always flow. In judging men's charts, first take the Wealth Palace and Virtue Palace as primary, and then examine how the Travel Palace fares. The Major and Minor Limits are mutually entwined; fortune and misfortune are judged together. When the limits encounter auspicious stars, one's lifelong actions are harmonious and smooth; when the Life sits in an inauspicious sector, a lifetime of seeking is difficult to fulfill.
Lian Zhen and Lu Cun resting on the Self Palace endow a woman with pure Yin and chaste virtue; Tian Tong and Tian Liang guarding the Life Palace endow a man with pure Yang and upright heart. Gentlemen's charts may also contain Yang, Tuo, Fire, or Bell; petty men's charts may not lack Ke, Quan, or Lu stars. The key is to examine whether they gain their palace strength or lose it, and specifically to distinguish entry into temple brilliance or loss of temple brilliance.
When judging children, one must carefully deduce the Childhood Limit. If a child's Life sits in an inauspicious sector, death by age three to five is certain; if the limit also meets malevolent stars, death will occur by age five to seven. Wen Chang, Wen Qu, and Tian Kui grant brilliance; even without studying poetry and classics, one's temperament is extraordinary. Learning much yet achieving little is due to Yang meeting Jie Sha. Stars like Wu Qu, Po Jun, Lian Zhen, and Tan Lang can indeed enable deep strategy and distant vision, bringing honor—but if Yang, Tuo, Kong, and Jie are added, they instead portend narrow ambitions, loneliness, and obscurity.
When the limits receive brilliant support from auxiliary stars, even a weak limit is not weak; when the Life Palace sits on auspicious ground, even an inauspicious life is not inauspicious. Duan Qiao and Jie Kong make both Major and Minor Limits difficult to traverse. Void in Mao and You instead indicates intelligence and abundant good fortune. The Life and Self meeting Zi Wei and Tian Fu accumulates hoards of gold and silver; when the two rulers (Life Ruler and Self Ruler) meet Jie and Kong, clothing and food prove insufficient. Plotting without accomplishment occurs when the Life/Limit encounters Yang; succeeding in the east yet completing in the west happens when the Limit/Self meets Zuo Fu and You Bi. When the Ke, Quan, Lu three excellences brighten, one is certain to be a pillar of extraordinary standing; when Kong, Jie, Yang, and Ling gather, one surely becomes a practitioner of the nine schools of lesser arts. When spirit is buoyant and free, Wen Chang and Wen Qu guard the Life and Self; toward cunning and insubstantiality, Yang and Tuo fall into deflated positions. Tian Ji, Tian Liang, and Yang meeting together brings early injury and late loneliness; Tan Lang, Wu Qu, and Lian Zhen meeting brings youthful poverty and later blessing.
These are the subtle essential secrets of Dou Shu; practitioners should savor them with care. 🌱
This Xuanwei Lun is one of the most important programmatic texts of Zi Wei Dou Shu. Its core ideas can be distilled into five pillars:

III. Mutual Reference Among Life, Self, and Limits: The Life Palace, Self Palace, and Major/Minor Limits must be viewed synthetically, never in isolation. "The gains and losses of host and guest must be weighed mutually; the limits and the Life/Self should cross-reference each other"—the fortune of the limits can amend the innate framework of the natal chart, while the foundation of the Life and Self can cushion the impact of the limits.
IV. Gender-Differentiated Perspective: Men's charts emphasize the Wealth, Virtue, and Travel palaces, focusing on social achievement and expansion of one's sphere; women's charts give priority to the Husband and Children palaces, focusing on family roles and relational bonds. This faithfully reflects social divisions of the ancient world and should be viewed with historical perspective.
V. The Special Theory of the Childhood Limit: For children, the Childhood Limit is the core focus, because children's qi and blood have not yet filled and their foundation has not yet solidified, making the impact of vicious stars especially lethal. This specialized discussion reflects ancient people's profound awareness of children's fragility.
Modernization of host-guest thinking: So-called "host-guest distinction" can be translated into the relationship between core resources and auxiliary resources in modern life. The host star is like one's core ability and main vocational direction; the guest stars are connections, opportunities, and the external environment. If core competence is weak (weak host), no amount of external opportunity will suffice; if core competence is strong (strong host), even unfavorable circumstances permit survival. The caution of "scheming within the same chamber is hardest to guard against": While harassment from noxious lands at adjacent houses is bearable, the subtlest betrayal from within — the deterioration of trust and coordination in the same team — is far more threatening.
