Chapter 13 of 14
神煞章
Heaven Virtue (Tiande) and Moon Virtue (Yuede) are the two most auspicious stars in the Bazi (Eight Characters) divine star system. The so-called "virtue" is a power that can benefit all beings, rescue others, suppress malevolent forces, and transform them into benevolent use. The ability to reverse ominous momentum into auspicious outcomes is called Heaven Virtue.
Moon Virtue, on the other hand, refers to the positions illuminated by the Three Harmony combinations and the moments of solar-lunar conjunction. Wherever the sun and moon shine, all celestial luminaries and earthly baleful stars can be subdued, thereby transforming misfortune into good fortune.
Compared with the Tianyi Nobleman, Heaven and Moon Virtue place greater emphasis on the dimension of blessed fortune. Regardless of the quality of one's Bazi configuration, encountering Heaven and Moon Virtue is always favorable. Even if one's chart contains fierce baleful spirits, one can traverse danger as if on level ground 🛡️—much like a heart patient carrying nitroglycerin tablets at all times: prepared for emergencies.
There is also a division of labor between Heaven Virtue and Moon Virtue: Heaven Virtue primarily governs wealth and honor, while Moon Virtue primarily governs the transformation of calamity into good fortune.
Those whose charts carry Heaven Virtue tend to be vegetarian-minded and compassionate🌱, kind and magnanimous, without malicious or petty intentions—tolerant and liberal rather than narrow-minded. Those with Moon Virtue are more associated with personal safety, as numerous dangers have ways of being resolved.

Yan Dongso states: "When the noble star is in place, all baleful spirits go into hiding. With the support of the Two Virtues, all misfortunes dissolve." If one's chart carries baleful stars, the support of these Two Virtues transforms and neutralizes them, and the harm is diminished. However, they must appear on the Day Pillar, and the Hour Pillar must not commit clashes, controls, punishments, or breaks—only then is it truly auspicious. For ordinary people who possess this, their entire lives are comfortable and secure: they do not violate laws, encounter no robbers, and even if they meet misfortune, it naturally dissipates. If combined with the Three Wonders or Tianyi Nobleman, it is especially celebratory. If it transforms in conjunction with Wealth Officer, Seal of Authority, or Eating God, each transformation increases blessing power twofold. In noble configurations, it indicates passing the imperial examinations and gaining monarch's favor; or receiving ancestral blessings, also achieving prominence. In humble configurations, it indicates lifelong warmth and satiety, complete fortune and longevity; even amid hardship and obstacles, one maintains integrity and finds peace in poverty, never losing the virtue of a gentleman. For women who possess it, they often become wives of nobility.
"San Ming Ling" states: Heaven Virtue is the hour of the Five Elements' fortune and virtue; if one encounters it, it indicates attaining high ministerial positions; especially good if Moon Virtue accompanies it; even with baleful stars, it still indicates pure nobility and prominence. "Zi Ping Fu" states: "When the Seal gains the same as Heaven Virtue, punishment by law never occurs, and there is no calamity even in old age." This shows that the power of Heaven Virtue surpasses that of Moon Virtue.
Heaven and Moon Virtue are the places where sun and moon converge and shine upon—what dark, murky, evil forces could dare to remain there? Thus, treachery and theft cease, evil thoughts lie hidden, divine spirits offer assistance, and evil ghosts flee into hiding. This is the virtuous and elegant qi of heaven and earth, the spirit that transforms misfortune into good fortune. When one's chart carries it, it is a great blessing. If further supported by Salary Horse, Nobleman, or Seal of Authority—or if the Two Virtues themselves constitute Wealth, Officer, Seal, or Eating God, combined with various noble configurations, and meeting the Three Wonders and Five Elements' thriving phases without harm, control, or destruction—then honor and emolument are prominent, and one never encounters violence or disaster. If violated or damaged, then endeavors are difficult to accomplish; for those with configurations that do not qualify, even if poor, humble, vicious, or evil, encountering these Two Virtues still provides redemptive and saving power.
"Mi Jue" states: "When Heaven and Moon Virtue approach the Day Pillar, the entire life has no danger or worry. If further meeting the General Star, one's name enters the Prime Minister's mansion." "Gui Gu" states: "One Virtue provides support; all misfortunes are explained away. Men rise meteoricly; women attain fortune and longevity in full." "Yu Jian" states: "When the hexagram meets Generative Vitality and Heaven Virtue unites, one lives long in the world." "San Ming Qian" states: "Heaven and Moon Virtue are the virtues of same-type yin-yang dwelling in different positions. Those who encounter them excel in literature and serve with pure distinction." "San Che" states: "With Heaven and Moon Virtue providing support, official matters go smoothly and illness is rare." "Xin Jing" states: "Heaven and Moon Virtue provide deliverance; a hundred calamities cause no harm." "Xiang Xin Fu" states: "With the Two Virtues when the Seal generates, one acts with grace and spreads virtue." "You Wei Fu" states: "Compassionate, auspicious, shrewd, and intelligent—Heaven and Moon Virtue manifest auspiciousness." "Ao Zhi Fu" states: "When destiny is deficient and the baleful star is strong, one needs the auspiciousness of Heaven's Mercy and the Two Virtues."

The essence of Heaven and Moon Virtue is the auspicious protective power of solar-lunar illumination. The ancients observed that when the sun and moon moved to specific positions, yin and yang harmonized, and righteous qi became full; all things thrived smoothly upon receiving this qi. Mapping this celestial phenomenon onto the human Bazi chart gave rise to the concept of the "Two Virtues."
The core logic operates on three levels:
In contemporary terms, Heaven and Moon Virtue can be understood as a psychological and behavioral pattern of "anti-risk constitution":
As for the notion that "Heaven Virtue surpasses Moon Virtue," it can be understood as: wealth and honor are themselves a form of protection. Those with resources and status naturally possess stronger resilience against risks—complementing the "direct resolution" represented by Moon Virtue.
In daily fortune-telling analysis, the key application points for Heaven and Moon Virtue:

| Assessing calamity resolution | ★★★ | ★★★★★ |

| Assessing wealth and rank | Direct assistance | Indirect support |
| Assessing personal safety | Moderate | Extremely strong |
Practical Judgment Principles:
Behind Heaven and Moon Virtue lies a profound proposition within traditional Chinese philosophy: the relationship between virtue and fortune.
The Book of Documents states, "Do good, and a hundred blessings will descend." The I Ching says, "Families that accumulate goodness will surely have surplus blessing." The design of Heaven and Moon Virtue essentially provides cosmological endorsement for the ethical proposition that "virtue is the foundation of fortune," using the patterns of celestial movement—virtue is not merely a social norm but a mode of existence connected to the qi of heaven and earth.
Deeper still: the Two Virtues' function of "covering malevolence and producing goodness" actually answers the question, "Why do good people also encounter adversity?" The ancients' answer: Virtue does not eliminate calamity, but it transforms the nature of calamity. The baleful star remains, yet within misfortune there is rescue; within danger there is a path forward. This resonates remarkably with modern existential psychology's insight that "suffering itself cannot be eliminated, but the way one responds to suffering can change its meaning."
Additionally, the judgment that "Heaven Virtue surpasses Moon Virtue" implies a value orientation: active creation (wealth and honor) is superior to defensive protection (calamity elimination). Heaven Virtue represents blessings accumulated through proactive virtuous conduct, while Moon Virtue leans toward passive protection. This suggests the ancients advocated "actively shaping one's destiny" through moral cultivation, rather than merely relying on external protection.
