The Earthly Branches correspond to the twelve zodiac animals, while the Heavenly Stems have no associated animals. Why is this? This is because the Heavenly Stems symbolize the dynamic and formless way of heaven, whereas the Earthly Branches represent the static and tangible phenomena of earth. The earth is thick, heavy, and turbid, capable of nurturing all things. Therefore:
The twelve zodiac animals are divided into odd/even and yang/yin:
Special Note: Why is the Snake, which has no feet, classified as Yin? Because the Si month (the fourth lunar month) is a month of pure Yang 🌞, and the Si hour (9-11 AM) is a time of rising Yang energy. While its numerical association is even, the hour itself is Yang. Therefore, the Yin creature Snake is used to symbolize the harmony of Yin and Yang. The ancients avoided directly mentioning "Yin," hence the choice of the footless snake implies duality (as evidenced by the concept of two-headed snakes).
The zodiac animals originated from a simplification of the Thirty-Six Animals. Their classification into Yin/Yang and odd/even reflects the exquisite ingenuity of creation ⛰️.
The ancients attempted to use the Five Elements to explain animal conflicts, but logical inconsistencies exist:
| Five Elements Relation | Animal Manifestation | Contradiction Point |
|---|---|---|
| Wood overcomes Earth: Tiger (Yin Wood) subdues Dog/Ox/Goat (Xu/Chou/Wei Earth) | ✅ Conforms | — |
| Water overcomes Fire: Pig (Hai Water) eats Snake (Si Fire) | ✅ Conforms | But Rat (Zi Water) does not drive away Horse (Wu Fire) ❓ |
| Metal overcomes Wood: Rooster (You Metal) does not peck Rabbit (Mao Wood) ❓ | ⚠️ Does not conform | — |
| Earth overcomes Water: Ox/Goat (Chou/Wei Earth) do not kill Pig (Hai Water) ❓ | ⚠️ Does not conform | — |
Key Conclusion: The checks and balances among animals are essentially competition based on physical strength (e.g., sharp teeth, muscular power) 🌪️, not a mechanical application of the Five Elements cycle.
When constructing the zodiac system, the ancients pursued logical consistency (e.g., odd/even classification) while candidly acknowledging contradictions (e.g., the questionable notion that "monkeys fear rats"). This attitude of coexistence of truth-seeking and tolerance is precisely the legacy traditional wisdom offers to the modern era: any theoretical model requires iteration in practice 🌱.
