The three celestial marvels in the sky refer to the sun, moon, and stars 🌞🌙⭐, corresponding to the heavenly stems: Yi (乙) as the sun marvel, Bing (丙) as the moon marvel, and Ding (丁) as the star marvel. The three terrestrial marvels are Jia (甲), Wu (戊), and Geng (庚), where Jia is the leader of yang wood (symbolizing leadership 🌳), Wu is the sovereign of yang earth (representing stability ⛰), and Geng is the essence of yang metal (signifying resilience 🔩). If a person's four pillars of birth (year, month, day, and hour) clearly display the combinations of Yi-Bing-Ding or Jia-Wu-Geng, and encounter the Six Rituals (referring to the destiny stems and branches corresponding to the birth month counted sequentially from the Zi position), it indicates a grand career and extraordinary achievements. If Jia-Wu-Geng meets the Two Auspicious Stars (Chou and Wei), it represents stable wealth and nobility. With the assistance of fortune deities and a state of vitality, the命主 is extremely noble; however, if there are no fortune deities and instead encounters death, exhaustion,冲破, or空亡, blessings will be diminished.
The ancients regarded the first month of the year as its beginning, with the sun rising in the Yi position, hence Yi is the sun marvel. The Old Man Star (symbolizing auspiciousness) often appears in the Ding position, so Ding is the star marvel. Moonlight illuminates the night up to the Bing position, making the world bright, thus Bing is the moon marvel. People with the Three Marvels destiny often possess extraordinary spirits, outstanding胸怀, curiosity, lofty ambitions, and broad knowledge and abilities. With an aura of nobility, they are elegant and wealthy; with官符劫杀, they have宏远器识; with空亡生旺, they transcend worldly concerns, remaining unswayed by wealth and unyielding to power. However, if accompanied by元辰,咸池, or death and exhaustion, they may be rendered useless.
Sequential consumption of heavenly stems (e.g., Yi-Bing-Ding or Jia-Wu-Geng appearing in order) can bring about child prodigies achieving top honors and widespread fame. If combined with日时禄马公卿杀, it enables both literary and martial prowess, assisting wise rulers. However, only when Yi people encounter Yi-Bing-Ding is it auspicious; other heavenly stems encountering it are not. Jia-Wu-Geng with sequential consumption and attaining长生 can reach high positions (e.g., officials in the two government offices). Without禄马, they are merely wealth accumulators. The Three Marvels must repeatedly encounter noble directions to manifest glory; empty marvels without nobility lead to poverty and being bullied.
The Three Marvels must enter the Three Harmonies bureau (e.g., Jia-Wu-Geng in Shen-Zi-Chen) to be considered清贵. Sequence is crucial;不顺 reduces efficacy by half, and encountering天罗地网,交伏空亡 is unfavorable. Conventional belief that seeing the Three Marvels implies nobility or that顺序 implies nobility is not entirely accurate: Yi-Bing-Ding顺生 (Yi generates Bing and Ding) represents descending秀气, an ordinary destiny;逆序 (Yi hour, Bing day, Ding year) represents ascending秀气, indicating nobility. Jia-Wu-Geng顺者 are noble,逆者 have薄福; those born at night have厚福;正得 leads to early nobility,倒乱 leads to late nobility or短寿.
Inverted Three Marvels (逆序), like Lü Wang (Jiang Ziya), the white-haired old fisherman, achieved late nobility. Each of the Five Elements has its own marvels and rituals, divided into逆顺: year,胎, month, day, hour顺; hour, day, month,胎, year逆.胎元 is established before or after the year, needing to avoid空刑败害. Three Marvels with合 (合 of the five辰 before and after) is superior, divided into逆顺喜方: Jia-Wu-Geng favor土金方, Yi-Bing-Ding favor火方, etc. Both逆顺三奇 are auspicious but忌讳不连顺,刑害空亡克倒乱.
The Taiyi Jing regards Xin-Ren-Gui as water marvels. The Four Marvels pattern, such as combinations like Jia-Wu-Geng-Ren or Yi-Bing-Ding-Geng, can lead to high official positions (e.g.,紫绯). Examples include the案例 of Weng Zhongcheng and Chen Zuosi.
The Three Marvels (Yi-Bing-Ding or Jia-Wu-Geng) and Four Marvels (e.g., Jia-Wu-Geng-Ren) are special combinations in destiny analysis, symbolizing extraordinary talent, exceptional spirit, and potential wealth and nobility. They represent the essence of the heavenly stems, and when combined with elements like the Six Rituals and Two Auspicious Stars, they can enhance the命主's abilities, social status, and life trajectory. Sequence, direction, and accompanying factors (e.g., vitality,空亡) are crucial, affecting the degree of auspiciousness or inauspiciousness.
In modern society, the concept of the Three Marvels can be interpreted as markers of innate advantages or special potential. For example:
The theory of the Three Marvels reflects the ancient idea of harmony between heaven and humanity, linking celestial phenomena (sun, moon, stars) with human nature, suggesting that destiny involves both innate determinism and后天变数. From a modern perspective, this encourages balancing "destiny" and "human effort": acknowledging innate advantages while shaping life through effort and environmental adaptation (e.g., avoiding misfortune and seeking auspiciousness). It also reflects on the limitations of superstition—the Three Marvels are not omnipotent and should be viewed rationally, avoiding destiny determinism.
