The Three Penalties are divided into four types:
Rudeness Penalty: Zi penalizes Mao, and Mao also penalizes Zi. 🌊 Zi water represents nascent yang energy, 🌅 Mao is the gateway of sunrise; both are yang, symbolizing the authority of ruler and father, making them mutually incompatible. Although water can generate wood, implying a mother-child relationship, the competition of yang energy causes harm at the point of generation. When prosperous, it indicates solemnity, sternness,暴躁 temper, and intolerance; when withered, it leads to arrogance, narrow-mindedness,大多 unfilial behavior, harming children, and alienating relatives. If entering a noble pattern, it may grant military authority but is unfavorable for close侍 positions, with unstable roles; in a base pattern, it brings violence, rebellion, and frequent legal troubles. For women, it suggests a lack of virtue.
Yuxiao Baojian states: Mao is the sun gate, Zi is where yang is born; the sun rises at Mao, and Zi and Mao oppose without hierarchy, hence the Rudeness Penalty. Sanming Tiyao adds: Though Zi and Mao generate and compare, disasters仍 occur.
Ingratitude Penalty: Yin penalizes Si, Si penalizes Shen, Shen penalizes Yin. 🔥 Yin contains Jia wood penalizing Si's Wu earth; Wu earth takes Gui water as wife (mother of Jia wood), so Jia penalizing Wu is like penalizing the father, showing ingratitude. Similarly, Si's Bing fire penalizes Shen's Geng metal, and Shen's Geng metal penalizes Yin's Jia wood. When prosperous, it indicates calmness, reticence, emotional detachment, and frequent betrayal; when withered, it brings hypocrisy and treachery. In a noble pattern, it favors杀戮 and merit-making; in a base pattern, it leads to eccentricity and greed. For women, it may cause difficult childbirth, blood loss, and harm to offspring, but possible integrity.
Yuxiao Baojian says: Yin fire penalizes Si metal, Si earth penalizes Shen water, Shen water penalizes Yin fire; remote restraint ignores generation, hence Ingratitude Penalty.
Abuse of Power Penalty: Chou penalizes Xu, Xu penalizes Wei, Wei penalizes Chou. ⛰ Chou has strong water (earth in water), abusing water to penalize Xu's tomb fire; Xu, as a noble position, abuses power to penalize Wei (low position); Wei has strong earth abusing power to penalize Chou's water. Each relies on strength to penalize. When prosperous, it indicates boldness, broad features, and direct criticism; when withered, it brings sharp eyes, thin build, eccentricity, malice, and schadenfreude. In a noble pattern, it commands respect and fairness; in a base pattern, it brings hidden disasters and penalties. For women, it causes isolation and harm.
Yuxiao Baojian states: Wei relies on Ding fire to penalize Chou metal, Chou relies on strong water to penalize Xu fire, Xu relies on Xin metal to penalize Wei wood, hence Abuse of Power Penalty.
Self-Penalty: Chen, Wu, You, Hai self-penalize. 💧 Chen is water tomb, full to disaster; 🔥 Wu is fire extreme, flourishing to extinction; ⚔️ You is metal rigid, strong to break; 🌱 Hai is wood lush, thriving to decay; each invites disaster due to excess. When prosperous, it indicates hidden toxicity and weak physique; when withered, it brings neglect, poison, over scrutiny, and limb injuries. In a noble pattern, it grants strategic power; in a base pattern, it leads to self-harm and folly. With凶杀, it may end badly. For women, it suggests promiscuity and early death.
Generally, Three Penalties: restraint brings misfortune, generation brings luck. Restraint like Jiazi penalizing Xinmao; generation excites elements, leading to intelligence and nonconformity; restraint causes madness and penalties; meeting禄 penalty indicates boldness and initiative. (From Dushen Jing)
Classic: Elements return to positions, penalizing四方. 🔹 Siyouchou metal penalizes west (Si penalizes Shen, You self-penalizes, Chou penalizes Xu); 🔹 Yinwuxu fire penalizes south (Yin penalizes Si, Wu self-penalizes, Xu penalizes Wei); 🔹 Haimaowei wood penalizes north (Hai self-penalizes, Mao penalizes Zi, Wei penalizes Chou, wood returns to root); 🔹 Shenzichen water penalizes east (Shen penalizes Yin, Zi penalizes Mao, Chen self-penalizes, water flows to end). (Yuxiao Baojian)
【Qilin Ku】: Three Penalties meeting day/night nobles and virtue indicate literary nobility. (Guigui Mingge)
【Kill to Stop Kill Pattern】: Full Three Penalties, Tai Sui penalized but restrained by other penalties, e.g., Guisi person with Wuyin month/day and Gengshen hour; originally penalized but not, often holds military or judicial roles. (Yuxiao Baojian)
【Nine Lives Determine No Penalty, First Discuss Tai Sui】: Avoid Three Penalties in elements and four pillars (Sanyuan, Sizhu, Lu Ma). Penalties in month/day/hour harmless if Tai Sui not involved; involvement brings misfortune. Distinguish penalty entry/non-entry, with year as host/guest: host penalizing guest with entry is noble, without is base; guest penalizing host without entry is noble, with is base. Details depend on stem-branch combinations, e.g., Yichou penalizing Gengxu (same type bad), penalizing Bingxu/Renxu (generation ignores penalty), penalizing Wuxu/Jiaxu (restraint, Wuxu as blessed land penalized very凶). (From Linkai Wuming)
Three Penalties with三奇, Tianyi, Tiande indicate top official rank; imbalance brings failure and exile. (Jinshu Mingjue)
Yinmi Fu: Three Penalties insufficient, hard to achieve greatness.
Three Penalties Kill: if body controls kill, holds judicial power; if kill controls body, brings humiliation and violent death. (Sanming Qian)
Penalty disasters determined by celestial palace: 🔪 metal guards against blades and heart disease; ⛰🌊 earth/water guard against falls, greed, and vitality loss; 🌳 wood guards against beatings and fractures; 🏔 Chenxuchouwei guard against consumption and spleen illness. Lower patterns guard against exile; noble patterns guard against internal illness and untimely death. Noble Lu Ma or clashes reduce disaster but shorten fortune and life. (Wuxing Yaolun)
Self-Penalty: avoid day/hour stem-branch clashes, indicating hidden toxicity, indecision, and illness. Wealth death means lack of energy, e.g., Siyouchou person with day/hour in Wuwei Shen. Classic: Self-Penalty wealth death, not fulfilling natural lifespan.
Example: Guiwei year, Xinyou month, Jiyou day, Guiyou hour; after fifty, right eye blind, lost son. (Case: Wu Erlang, Jingyi)
Cunzhu Chibi: Four pillars with Self-Penalty often mean cleft lip, six fingers, or blind eye. Self-Penalty with kill indicates不良 and hand/foot injury. Yang Shen entering yin kill brings crisis and ill repute.
Chen, Wu, You, Hai all present mean凶. Year/month yang, day/hour yin with羊刃, regardless of status, end badly. E.g., Bingwu羊刃 year, Renchen month, Guihai劫杀 day, Bingchen hour; high official executed at 43. (Jinshu Mingjue)
Three Penalties stem from conflicts and balance among elements and stems, reflecting the philosophy of "excess brings harm": Rudeness Penalty (Zi-Mao) shows hierarchy loss, Ingratitude Penalty (Yin-Si-Shen) shows betrayal, Abuse of Power Penalty (Chou-Xu-Wei) shows bullying, Self-Penalty (Chen-Wu-You-Hai) shows self-destruction. Essentially, they represent destiny fluctuations from excessive or suppressed elemental energy, emphasizing balance and harmony.
In modern context, Three Penalties metaphorically indicate character flaws or environmental conflicts:
Three Penalties root in yinyang-five element philosophy, revealing "unity of opposites": generation hides restraint, harmony contains conflict. Modern extension: contradiction drives development, key is transformation not elimination—penalty patterns controlled (e.g., kill to stop kill) become opportunities. Encourages cultivating character in adversity, turning penalty into power.
