The Wandering Soul hexagram refers to the seventh hexagram in each palace 🌪. For example, in the Qian Palace, it is the Fire over Earth (Jin) hexagram; in the Kun Palace, it is the Water over Heaven (Xu) hexagram, and so on for the other palaces.
The Returning Soul hexagram is the eighth hexagram in each palace 🔒. For instance, in the Qian Palace, it is the Fire over Heaven (Dayou) hexagram; in the Kun Palace, it is the Water over Earth (Bi) hexagram, and similarly for the other palaces.
The ancients believed: The Wandering Soul hexagram symbolizes traveling far, even a thousand miles away. If one inquires about something lasting, the Wandering Soul hexagram indicates instability, a restless mind, and frequent changes of plans. The Returning Soul hexagram signifies staying within boundaries, with matters constrained and difficult to advance. It should be interpreted oppositely to the Wandering Soul hexagram. When obtaining a Wandering Soul hexagram:
Old Man Yehe said: The ruling factor must be the "Useful God" (用神, the specific line representing the matter inquired about), and these hexagram symbols should be used as supplementary references. Discarding the Useful God and relying solely on the Wandering Soul/Returning Soul interpretation is incorrect.
[New Commentary]: Yehe’s view is correct. The Wandering Soul and Returning Soul hexagrams often prove accurate, but they do not dictate吉凶 (fortune or misfortune); they belong to the realm of symbolism. I have discussed this in detail in my book True Interpretations of Six Lines Hexagram Examples for reference.
Wandering Soul and Returning Soul hexagrams are specific classifications in Six Lines (Liù Yáo) divination. The Wandering Soul represents instability, change, and restlessness, while the Returning Soul signifies rigidity, fixation, and difficulty in movement. The key point is that these hexagram symbols are only auxiliary information. The true core of interpretation is the Useful God (the specific line representing the inquired matter). One must not prioritize the auxiliary over the core.
In contemporary society, the "instability" of the Wandering Soul hexagram can be analogized to modern phenomena such as career mobility, remote work, or frequent relocations 🌍. The "rigidity" of the Returning Soul hexagram reflects a stable life but potential lack of flexibility or falling into a routine. For example:
Wandering Soul and Returning Soul embody the ancient Chinese philosophy of "movement and stillness" and "change and constancy" in the concept of Yin and Yang ⚖️: life always seeks a balance between fluidity and stability. Modern psychology’s concepts of "adaptability" and "fixed mindset" can engage in dialogue with this—the Wandering Soul hexagram encourages a growth mindset, while the Returning Soul hexagram reminds one to value consistency but avoid rigidity. This reflects the holistic view of Yijing studies: symbols (象) must be combined with reality (理) and specific contexts (占).
