Basic Concept of the Broken Moon 📅
The Broken Moon refers to the clash between the Monthly Branch (the earthly branch of the current month) and specific days in each month. The corresponding relationships are as follows:
Traditional Yijing studies believe that if the Use God (the Yao representing the subject of inquiry in divination) encounters the Broken Moon, it is like going against the natural order 🌪️, becoming withered roots and decayed wood. Even with assistance, it is difficult to revive; if harmed, the damage worsens. Even if the Use God appears in the hexagram, it is as if it does not exist; if it is hidden (fu cang), it becomes even harder to manifest. Even if the Daily Branch assists, it cannot revive; if a moving Yao acts as a Harmful God (a damaging Yao), it cannot cause actual harm; as a changing Yao, it cannot harm the moving Yao.
Ye He’s Practical Perspective 🔥
Through actual divination experiences, Ye He refuted the traditional view: moving Yaos can harm other Yaos, and changing Yaos can harm moving Yaos. This is because divine signs manifest in "movement"—if there is no fortune or misfortune, nothing moves; once movement occurs, there is a basis for fortune or misfortune. Although it may be broken in the current month, it will no longer be broken once the month passes; if broken today, it will no longer be broken on the day of actual breaking (the day of the Broken Moon) or on a day of harmony (e.g., Shen and Si harmonize). The timing of the response can be as near as days or hours, or as far as years or months. Only static Yaos without assistance from the Daily Branch or moving Yaos remain broken indefinitely.
Divination Example 1: Inquiry About Future Official Position 🏛️
On the Chou day of the Hai month, the divination question was, "Will I hold an official position in the future?" The hexagram obtained was Dui transforming into Song:
The hexagram shows the Official Ghost Yao moving and generating the World Yao, with the World Yao transforming into an advancing spirit, clearly indicating signs of an official position. However, the Official Ghost encounters the Broken Moon (Hai month breaks Si), and the World Yao encounters a void period (Xun Kong). The void is filled due to the clash with the Daily Branch, so it is not void; but the broken Yao lacks assistance from the Daily Branch or moving Yaos. Ye He doubted the traditional interpretation and asked for another divination, obtaining the Shui Di Bi hexagram (Official Ghost Mao Wood holding the World Yao).
Interpretation: The first hexagram shows the Official moving and generating the World Yao, while the second hexagram shows the Official临近 the World Yao, indicating a destined official position. The response occurred in the year of actual breaking (Si year), and indeed, the person inherited the official position in the Si year. If the ancient method of "Broken Moon is useless" were followed, it would have been entirely incorrect.
Divination Example 2: Inquiry About Father’s Return 👨👦
On the Zi day of the Chen month, the divination question was, "When will my father return?" The hexagram obtained was Qian transforming into Guai:
The ancient method interpreted the Use God as lacking energy, meaning the father could not return. However, Ye He interpreted: The Vermilion Bird is临近 the moving Parent Yao, indicating news on the Mao day, and return必定 on the Wu or Wei day. Indeed, news was received on the Mao day, and the father returned home on the Yi Wei day. The response on the Mao day was due to the broken Yao encountering harmony (Xu and Mao harmonize), and the response on the Wei day was due to the transformation from void to non-void.
New Interpretation: When predicting return dates, the Use God transforming into retreat反而 signifies return, while transforming into advancement makes return difficult—this reflects the辩证 logic of "retreat as return, advancement as departure."
Divination Example 3: Inquiry About Emotional Reconciliation 💔
On the Mao day of the Wei month, a woman asked whether she could reconcile with her boyfriend after a quarrel and breakup. The hexagram obtained was Di Ze Lin transforming into Zhen:
The ancient method interpreted the Use God as entering the monthly tomb, transforming into retreat, and the hexagram transforming into six clashes, making reconciliation difficult. However, Ye He interpreted the transformation into retreat as a sign of return, predicting reconciliation in the Shen month. It indeed happened.
Modern Insight: In emotional conflicts, "transforming into retreat" may indicate one party主动让步 or returning, rather than fading away.
Divination Example 4: Inquiry About Official Career Prospects 🎓
On the Mao day of the Wu month, the divination question was about future official prospects. The hexagram obtained was Gen transforming into Guan:
Interpretation: The moving Shen Metal clashes with the World Yao Official Star, indicating misfortune in the seventh month due to an adversary (the Response Yao represents others). The moving Zi Water is broken in the month and transforms into void, unable to generate the Official, leading to demotion and departure. Indeed, the person was impeached in the seventh month, and the case was settled with demotion in the winter solstice month.
New Interpretation: The Offspring moving and transforming into the Official signifies "losing and regaining an official position"; the fifth Yao Zi Water broken in the month indicates lack of support from superiors; the Vermilion Bird临近 the Response Yao clashing with the World Yao signifies disputes and troubles.
A subsequent divination yielded the Di Ze Lin hexagram, interpreted as regaining the original rank in the Zi year. Indeed, the person was reappointed in the Jia Zi year but encountered misfortune in the Chen year due to entering the tomb.
Summary 📘
The key to the Broken Moon lies in whether the Yao is "moving." If moving, there is potential for transformation (after the month passes, encountering harmony, or actual breaking); if static, it remains broken indefinitely. The traditional view that "the Broken Moon is useless" is overly absolute and requires analysis结合动变.
Note: The cases in this chapter are all hexagram-based divinations, with no standard八字命例 (Qian Zao/Kun Zao), so no八字 components are included.
