The master hoped that future learners would strive diligently🌱, thus imparting these fate-telling truths that are as arduous as grinding iron.
Those blessed with both wealth and honor often succeed because the Use Star🌟 subdues the Trial Star⚠️; those who live in lifelong poverty suffer because the Enemy Star🔥 harms the Favor Star🌠. If the Favor Star resides in the four cardinal houses (Zi, Wu, Mao, You), one is destined to transcend the ordinary; if the Trial Star descends directly, calamity is self-evident. When the Enemy Star and Trial Star jointly guard the life palace, one will either be adopted away from their ancestry or cohabit with those of a different surname. If the Trial Star holds authority in the limit palace, successes and failures will fluctuate over the years; if it shatters, injures, or penalizes the wealth repository, livelihood will be arduous. When the Bane Star and Trial Star travel together, fortune is often unexpectedly gained; when the Favor Star meets the Enemy Star, nothing is achieved. Inviting a ghost into the room (malefic star intrusion), one remains unaware of their poverty; when the Trial Star serves as the Use Star, it must not be fought or overcome. Transforming trials into favors brings significant fortune; the conjunction of the Bane Star and Enemy Star inevitably leads to injury or penalty. If the Favor Star guards the limits but encounters the Enemy Star, unforeseen disasters arise; if the Trial Star is directly confronted and subdued by the Use Star, fortune is boundless.
When the Mother Star (Seal Star) contends for power, it certainly does not bring fortune; when two Ghosts (Officer and Killer) fight each other, how can disaster be avoided? Even if the Favor Star is prominent, its repeated appearance renders it ineffective; even if the Trial and Enemy Stars are mild, their recurrence ensures demise. Encountering favor without prospering is due to the Favor Star falling in the Enemy Star’s palace; facing trials without calamity occurs because the Trial Star resides in the Use Star’s position. If the Trial Star guards a trial palace, misfortune is profound; if the Favor Star occupies a favor position, fortune is immeasurable. If the Trial Star guards a favor palace, misfortune turns to fortune; if the Favor Star resides in an enemy position, even success will be modest. Who can exhaustively fathom the mechanisms of creation? It is difficult to fully articulate clear judgments.
When the Officer Star harmonizes with the Day Master, one is destined to be illustrious; when the Favor or Use Star occupies the official position, one becomes a person of prosperity. Without further complications, why entertain doubts? Observe the strength of the stars, then assess their relative weights. If the Favor Star occupies the Use position, even encountering the Enemy or Bane Star will not dim its brilliance; if the Use Star enters a trial palace, it will only shine when favor arrives. When the Bane Star oversees, the three directions (opposite, trine palaces) must be examined; when the Favor or Use Star illuminates, true conjunctions must be distinguished. Orientation requires careful consideration, and the balance of day and night demands detailed analysis.
Spouses and children are originally Trial Stars; if subdued or transformed, they can instead accompany one to old age; offspring are primarily Favor Stars, but if overly flourishing, they may bring injury or penalty. If the Favor Star guards the life palace, one enjoys fortune and prosperity; if the Bane or Trial Star approaches the body, it damages usefulness and brings ailments. If the limits encounter the Favor Star, one may buy land or sell property (signifying change and opportunity); if the palace is met with a malefic star, repeated financial losses occur, varying in severity, with alliances and rescues possible. If the Trial Star has allies and occupies a favorable position, disaster is unspeakable; if the Favor Star is solidly positioned and met with growth, fortune is truly reliable. Lifelong successes and failures stem from deficiencies in the body and life palaces; vague fortunes and misfortunes arise from the mixing of favors and enmities.
If the body and life enter favor, success comes in due time. If the life is established in Chen or You, and the Earth Star meets the Moon (Saturn conjuncts the Moon), fortune should be attained; if the life is established in Yin or Hai, and the Metal Qi approaches the body, what will become of it? Fire, Luo, and Ji (Mars, Rahu, Ketum, and other malefic spirits) are inherently ominous, but transformed into Favor Stars, they bring fortune; Wood, Qi, Metal, and Water are inherently benign stars, but as Bane or Trial Stars, they bring calamity and illness. An Earth-life person encountering a Metal limit and meeting Fire cannot overcome Metal and thus attains fortune; a superior-life person encountering a Wood limit and meeting Water will instead aid Wood and inevitably invite disaster.
If the limits encounter trials in a strong position without rescue, the limits will inevitably collapse (collapse of luck limits); if the malefic stars in the limit palace are weak but have allies, it is still inauspicious. If the youth limits reach Zhuang (possibly referring to a malefic palace), one will sigh in solitude, losing the opportunity to build a family; if the elderly limits reach the repository tomb, one will enjoy the fortune of authority and respect, as well as the joy of carefree leisure. Those who can discern the verses within the classics dare to predict the disasters and fortunes of life.
This chapter first discusses the urgency of the Trial Star, the transformation of calamity into auspiciousness through control, and the nature of the Favor Star; it then explains that harm from the Enemy Star brings misfortune. If the Trial Star guards the life palace, it must originally be non-flourishing; if further reinforced by the transiting year, how can its strength be withstood? If the Favor Star occupies the Use position while the Enemy Star is strong, the Use Star dare not harm the Favor Star, hence auspiciousness. If the Bane Star is in the life palace, it is inherently ominous, but if the three directions encounter the Use or Trial Star, the Bane Star cannot cause disaster. Those whose body and life encounter the Trial or Bane Star rarely avoid misfortune. Fortune and misfortune both exist, necessarily depending on whether the body and life encounter the Enemy or Favor Star. If the Trial Star is in the major limit, misfortune is inevitable; however, if the three directions have the Use Star, it becomes even more auspicious.
This ancient text primarily expounds on how the interactions of astrological bodies in fate determination determine life’s fortunes and misfortunes. Through the configurations and transformations of the "Favor Star"🌠 (auspicious stars, such as the Seal Star or Resource Star), "Trial Star"⚠️ (malefic stars, such as the Killer or Wealth-Competing Star), "Enemy Star"🔥 (antagonistic stars, such as the Officer Star harming the body), and "Use Star"🌟 (harmonizing stars), the rhythms of fate are revealed. It emphasizes "control and transformation" and "balance"—malefic stars, when controlled, can turn auspicious, while auspicious stars, when harmed, can turn malefic, reflecting a dynamic and dialectical philosophy of fate.
