日为根,月为苗,年为花,时为实,实者结果也, 以人一生喻之,用神月支所藏者,如子宫取癸水之类;
Major Cycles (Dayun) refer to the Heavenly Stems representing the Five Movements and the Earthly Branches representing the Six Qi, hence collectively termed "Yunqi" (Fortune Qi). In Ziping命運理 (a school of Chinese astrology), the Earthly Branches are primarily considered for Major Cycles, while the Heavenly Stems are considered for the flowing year's Year Guardian (Taisui). The so-called "Jiao Yun Tong Jie Mu" (Fortune connecting like grafting wood) is a metaphor: the Stems and Branches are like trees, with the sixty Jiazi cycle represented by flower characters; if the Stems and Branches are in their proper season and command, it is like a tree naturally flowering and bearing fruit 🌱. The Month Command (Yueling) is the Celestial Yuan (source), and Major Cycles are calculated starting from the month. It is akin to a sapling—seeing the sprout reveals the tree's name. The Month Command's Useful Spirit (Yongshen) determines the pattern (Geju). Thus, Major Cycles are like grafting wood (Jie Mu). Destiny has root, sprout, flower, and fruit, which perfectly corresponds to this idea.
Exiting Gui (癸) and entering Jia (甲) is like a person changing clothes after sweating; Jiaxu (甲戌) connecting to Guihai (癸亥) is the grafting of Stems and Branches. Chou (丑) cycle connecting to Yin (寅), Chen (辰) connecting to Si (巳), Wei (未) connecting to Shen (申), Xu (戌) connecting to Hai (亥)—this is called corner-turn grafting (Zhuanjiao Jiemu, grafting at the four corners). For those with inauspicious patterns, it means death; for those with good patterns, it means disaster. Continuous Qi like Yīn-Mǎo-Chén (寅卯辰) as one breath or Shēn-Yǒu-Xū (申酉戌) as one breath does not count as grafting. For example, for a Day Master of Jia (甲) or Yi (乙) getting Yīn (寅) or Mǎo (卯) cycle, it is called the Rob Wealth (Jiecai) and Failing Wealth (Bai Cai) cycle, indicating overcoming parents, wife, wealth loss, and conflicts; undergoing Bǐng (丙), Dīng (丁), Sì (巳), or Wǔ (午) cycles is called the Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) cycle, indicating overcoming children, lawsuits, or imprisonment; undergoing Gēng (庚), Xīn (辛), Shēn (申), or Yǒu (酉) cycles is called the Officer's Homeland (Guan Xiang) cycle, indicating gaining fame but excess leading to disaster or illness; undergoing Rén (壬), Guǐ (癸), Hài (亥), or Zǐ (子) cycles is called the Seal Ribbon (Yin Shou) cycle, indicating auspicious celebrations and increased production; undergoing Chén (辰), Xū (戌), Chǒu (丑), Wèi (未), Wù (戊), or Jǐ (己) cycles is called the Wealth (Cai) cycle, indicating success in fame and wealth. But these are just rigid metaphorical rules; one must deduce based on the pattern's likes and dislikes, not be stubborn—the wonder lies in flexible adaptation 🔥. For example, if the Officer Star is in a declining cycle, a weak Stem (Gan) needs a prosperous cycle; this is precisely the principle of a weak Stem seeking prosperous Qi. Excess and deficiency require flexible handling. It must also be combined with the verification of mystical stars such as Loneliness and Harm (Guhai), Empty Death (Kongwang), Entanglement (Goujiao), Bereavement Gate (Sangmen), Funeral Guest (Diaoke), Tomb (Mu), Illness (Bing), Death (Si), Official Seal (Guanfu), White Tiger (Baihu), etc.—their verification is spirit-like. Another method: encountering Blade of Wealth (Yangren), Peach Blossom (Taohua), Repeating Verse (Fuyin), Opposing Verse (Fanyin), Rest (Xiuyin), Death, Exhaustion, or Decay is inauspicious; encountering Emperor's Prosperity (Diwang), Approaching Officer (Linguan), Salary Horse (Luma), Nobleman (Guiren), Growth (Yang), Crown and Belt (Guandai), or Repository (Ku) is auspicious; Empty Death (Kongwang) is inauspicious, but if the inauspicious is empty, it is conversely auspicious, and if the auspicious is empty, it is conversely inauspicious. Major Cycles should not conflict with or clash with the Year Guardian (Taisui)—this is inauspicious; even more taboo are mutual penalties, clashes, or conflicts. The year clashing with or overcoming the cycle is auspicious; the cycle overcoming the year is inauspicious. For those with inauspicious patterns, it means death; if the year and cycle mutually generate, it is auspicious. Combinations of Salary Horse, Nobleman, and mutual interactions (Jiao Hu) are also auspicious. Examine the year and deduce—there is no lack of verification.
The Day Pillar is the root, the Month Pillar is the sprout, the Year Pillar is the flower, and the Hour Pillar is the fruit (result), using a human life as a metaphor. The Useful Spirit (Yongshen) lies within what is stored in the Month Branch, like taking Gui Water (癸水) from the Zǐ (子) palace; transitioning to use Jiao Yun (Fortune) is like changing wood,忌讳大风摇动折损 (taboo strong wind shaking and breaking). Applying the cycle analogy, encountering a malicious killing flowing year that overcomes will certainly be inauspicious. Yīn (寅) connecting to Mǎo (卯) connecting to Chén (辰), the eastern one-breath is called moving flowers (Yi Hua); although there are taboo stars, there is no damage. In this destiny analogy, although encountering evil stars, it does not harm life; if the fortune is good, it is auspicious; if not good, it is inauspicious.
The Year Guardian (Taisui) is the Son of Heaven within the year and must not be offended; offending it brings inauspiciousness. Destiny texts say: The day offends the year ruler, disaster and calamity will surely be heavy. For example, a Jia (甲) day seeing an Earthly Taisui of Wù (戊土), if the overcoming is heavy, it means death. For those born on Jiǎ (甲) or Yǐ (乙) days at Yīn (寅), Mǎo (卯), Hài (亥), or Wèi (未) day or hour, offending and overcoming the Taisui means certain death without doubt; if there is rescue, it is auspicious, such as if the Eight Characters have a metal formation of Gēng (庚), Xīn (辛), Yǒu (酉), or Sì (巳). The texts say: Wù and Jǐ (戊己) worry upon meeting Jiǎ and Yǐ (甲乙); on the stem heads, there must be Gēng or Xīn (庚辛). Or a fire formation of Bǐng or Dīng (丙丁) burning wood—there will be disaster, but do not blame. Or obtaining Jǐ (己) combining with Jiǎ (甲) also resolves it. Generally, the Taisui must not be injured; mutual generation is auspicious. If the Five Elements have rescue, that year反而为财 (conversely becomes wealth). Those who offend the Taisui will experience凶丧 (inauspicious bereavement), overcome concubines, wealth loss, and conflicts with superiors in that year. Adding Entanglement (Goujiao), Empty Death (Kongwang), Wanton Pool (Xianchi), House Tomb (Zhai Mu), Illness Talisman (Bingfu), Death Talisman (Sifu), White Tiger (Baihu), Blade of Wealth (Yangren), and other killing stars arriving, calamities emerge endlessly. The arrival of mystical stars should be deduced for severity. If the Stem does not overcome the year, one should still be cautious of the cycle overcoming the year; adding year-cycle clash and penalty, Blade of Wealth clash and combination, indicates loss, consumption, and funeral matters; encountering Nobleman, Salary Horse is slightly auspicious. If the Eight Characters have rescue, there is no danger. The texts say: The Taisui is the master of all killing stars; entering destiny未必为灾 (may not necessarily be a disaster); but if it encounters a land of battle, it will surely penalize the original destiny.
For example, born on a Jiǎ (甲) day, flowing year Wù Earth (戊土)—Wood overcoming Earth is called the day offending the year ruler, indicating inauspiciousness. However, if the pillar has Gēng Metal (庚金) controlling Jiǎ (甲), and Jiǎ is controlled and thus does not overcome Wù, it is called the Five Elements having rescue. Wù is the partial wealth of Jiǎ,反而招财 (conversely attracting wealth), hence auspicious. The rest仿此 (follow this example).
