Overall Meaning
This chapter systematically elaborates on three core concepts in Eight Characters (Bazi) astrology: the conflicting relationship of Conflict with the Grand Duke Jupiter (征太岁), the analytical system centered on the Day Master (日干), and the pivotal role of the Monthly Ordinance (月令) in pattern analysis. The concept of Conflict with the Grand Duke Jupiter emphasizes the clashing effects between the heavenly stems and earthly branches with the annual pillars; the Day Master as the Core establishes the deductive logic centered on the self; and the Monthly Ordinance reveals the dominant influence of seasonal five elements on the overall chart. Together, these three concepts form the foundational framework of Bazi analysis.
Overall Meaning
"Conflict" (征) refers to clash, conflict, and offense 🌪. It is akin to a subject provoking a ruler, representing a challenge from below to above. When the day pillar’s stems and branches clash with the Grand Duke Jupiter (流年干支), or when the great cycle (大运) stems and branches clash with the Grand Duke Jupiter, or when the Grand Duke Jupiter counter-clashes the day pillar’s stems and branches, all constitute a "Conflict." A comprehensive judgment is needed to determine whether there is a rescuing deity in the chart. If the day stem or the stems and branches of the annual cycle form a harmonious combination with the Grand Duke Jupiter, it is termed "Day Obscuration" (日晦) or "Year Obscuration" (岁晦), indicating a year of entanglement in regrets and outcomes contrary to expectations.
In the example case, the Bazi chart is: Yi Chou (乙丑), Yi Hai (乙亥), Ren Shen (壬申), Yi Si (乙巳). 🌊 The day stem is Ren Water (壬水), and in the Liu Year of Bing Yin (丙寅流年) (Grand Duke Jupiter is Bing Fire 丙火), it forms a "day stem clashing the Grand Duke Jupiter." The day branch Shen Metal (申金) contains Geng (庚), which also clashes with the Yin Wood (寅木) of the Grand Duke Jupiter, which contains Jia (甲). Additionally, Yin, Si, and Shen form the Three Penalties (三刑). The great cycle is Xin Wei (辛未), which combines to activate the Wood formation of the Grand Duke Jupiter (hurting the officer), leading to a fierce battle between the flourishing Fire and Earth, ultimately resulting in a tragic death.

Practical Value ⚡
Philosophical Reflection 🤔
The interaction between heaven and humanity involves both constraints and opportunities for transformation. Crises often conceal the codes for breakthrough in one's life pattern.
Overall Meaning
The Bazi system uses the day stem to represent the individual self 🌱. The year pillar is like roots, carrying the legacy of ancestors; the month pillar is like stems, reflecting parents, siblings, and the early environment; the day pillar is like blossoms, showcasing personal abilities and spouse relationships; the hour pillar is like fruits, symbolizing children's achievements and later-life fortune. By analyzing the day stem's state of strength or weakness (flourishing, thriving, dying, or exhausted) in the monthly ordinance, as well as its interactions of generation, restraint, transformation, and clash with other stems and branches, one can deduce the trajectory of life.
For example, if born on a Jia Zi (甲子) day and the earthly branch Shen (申) is present, it forms the Shen-Zi-Chen Water formation 💧. Further observation is needed to determine whether the other stems and branches weaken or strengthen the energy of the Jia Wood day master—if any character damages the day master's elegance or destroys the useful deity, it is necessary to seek restraint or transformation rather than reinforcement.

Philosophical Reflection 🤔
The individual is both a product of family history and a self-shaping entity—the metaphor of roots, stems, blossoms, and fruits reveals the unity of life continuity and阶段性 growth.
Overall Meaning
The monthly ordinance (monthly branch) acts like a guiding principle 🧭, determining the strength and weakness of the five elements in the entire Bazi chart. If the year pillar's officer and seal are effective, ancestral blessings appear early; if the month pillar carries the officer and seal, the individual possesses exceptional talent and knowledge; if the hour pillar has auspicious deities returning to strength, later life will be smooth. If the monthly ordinance contains a useful deity, support from parents is easily obtained; if the year pillar has a useful deity, resources from ancestors are accessible; if the hour pillar has a useful deity, assistance from children is likely. Conversely, support will be weak.

Philosophical Reflection 🤔
The forces of heaven, earth, and humanity permeate life throughout—ancestral inheritance, self-striving, and descendant continuity form a complete energy cycle chain.
(Note: Phrases in the original text such as "年干为祖支为祖季" contain transcription errors. Based on mainstream theory, it has been corrected to "year stem for grandfather, branch for grandmother"; "兑制" is likely a mistranslation of "restraint" and is interpreted according to actual astrological logic.)
