On the General Principles of Female Fate
When analyzing a woman's fate, it differs significantly from that of a man. Scholar Ding Jinshi of the Thatched Cottage proposed the "Eight Methods of Primordial Spirit Dynamics," which include Illumination, Return, Ghost, Hidden, Belonging, Category, Following, and Transformation. The Eight Methods for female fate emphasize: a pure and harmonious fate configuration results in nobility and elegance, while a turbid and chaotic one may lead to a life of impropriety. The Official Star represents the husband and fortune; strong Wealth fosters the Official Star, bringing the husband good fortune; the Seal Ribbon and Eating God signify reputation and honor. However, an overly strong Seal Ribbon may harm offspring. A combination of Seal Ribbon, Wealth, and Official Star often indicates a noble background, with the woman being talented, beautiful, and virtuous. For example: for a Day Master Jia, encountering Xin-You signifies the rightful husband, while Ding-Wu may harm the rightful husband, and Geng-Chen represents a secondary husband. Repeated appearances of Geng-Shen or Xin-You may lead to the loss of a husband and remarriage. Excessive Wealth Stars or overly strong Official and Killing Stars suggest a mix of overt and covert relationships, leading to a chaotic life. For a woman, a thin Wealth Star is favorable, as it benefits the husband and children. An Official Star in its rightful position, a controlled Seven Killings, a strong Eating God, or a Seal Ribbon with the Virtues of Heaven and Moon indicate an honorable husband and distinguished children, possibly earning titles. The clash of the Hurting Officer and Official Star, mixed Official and Killing Stars, or a strong Eating God and Wealth with a weak self often result in jealousy, greed, and a fearsome, stubborn nature. The clash of Hurting Officer and Official Star may lead to the loss of a husband and remarriage, along with illness and toil; a Hurting Officer in the Year Pillar suggests childbirth difficulties or a short life. Those with a Hurting Officer are intelligent and beautiful; with Wealth, they prosper; without Wealth, they struggle. Those with Robbing Wealth, Hurting Officer, and a strong self are of low status and poverty. The above fifteen patterns, if clashing with the Official Star or meeting combinations, carry the risks of the Hurting Officer; even if wealthy and noble, they may not avoid a life of romantic entanglements. It is best to have only one Seven Killings or Official Star; multiple Killings indicate multiple husbands, and combined Official or Killing Stars may lead to becoming a concubine or conflicts among sisters. For example: Jia's use of the Xin Official being combined with Bing, or Yi's use of the Geng Official encountering Ding combination, suggest unstable marriages. A fate configuration with Hurting Officer and a dead or exhausted Official Star, Solitary and Widow Stars, or empty blanks in the Day and Hour Pillars indicates a lonely and restrictive fate. If the Official or Killing Stars appear in the heavenly stems but lack roots in the earthly branches and are in a state of rest or imprisonment, the woman lacks the energy of a husband and is likely to become a concubine. The Virtues of Heaven and Moon can avert childbirth difficulties and bloodshed, indicating a pure nature. A weak body in a woman's fate suggests a gentle and filial nature, while a strong body may lead to dominating the husband and causing trouble. The fate configuration should avoid the Horse of Travel and the Pool of Immortality (Xianchi), favoring purity, harmony, and softness; the same applies to annual cycles. Inauspicious days like the Mismatched and Lone Phoenix days (e.g., "Wood Tiger Widow" refers to Jia-Yin day, "Golden Pig" to Xin-Hai day, etc.) are unfavorable for marriage, often leading to twists and turns. If the Official or Killing Stars face unfavorable cycles, loneliness may ensue; with Wealth and Official Stars present but cycles encountering Hurting Officer or Robbing Wealth, marriage may be difficult until the cycle passes.
Ode of Yin Life
To analyze a woman's fate, first observe the strength of the Husband Star (Official Star), then examine her own honor or disgrace and the strength of her offspring. A prosperous husband and thriving children lead to wealth and nobility; dead children and a declining husband mean poverty and low status. Having a husband and children but living in poverty is due to the self being in a declining position; having no husband or children but thriving is due to the self residing in a prosperous position. Few Noble People may not bring wealth but still prosperity; combining with Noble Gods may easily lead to a life of entertainment. A strong Hurting Officer often indicates covert wealth but difficulties in attracting a husband; a secondary husband is revealed in the Day and Hour Pillars. A declining husband and strong self suggest integrity; strong Ghost (Killing Star) and weak self lead to loneliness and coldness. Careful observation of the Five Elements is key. The Eating God represents the Children Star (e.g., Jia person's Eating God is Bing, Yi person's Eating God is Ding); a strong and vibrant Eating God indicates honorable and blessed children.
Chapter on Wealth, Nobility, Poverty, and Humility in Yin Life
For a woman's fate, the Official Star is paramount: an Official Star with Killing leads to poverty and low status; an Official Star in command brings peace and honor. A heavy Hurting Officer harms the husband and indicates a strong nature; the Inverted Eating (Partial Seal) reduces blessings and brings loneliness and misfortune. Heavy Killing may lead to marriage into a noble family, but many combinations damage reputation. Sitting on the禄 (Lu) and riding the chariot indicates steadiness; a filled body and moving steps suggest frivolity. Peach Blossom waves rolling indicate promiscuity; the Day禄 returning to the Hour brings respect. The Virtues of Heaven and Moon as the natal fate, meeting the Seal Ribbon, may lead to titles. A羊刃 (Yang Blade) in the Hour Pillar harms the husband and damages nature; a strong Day Master meeting the Golden Spirit (e.g., hours like Xin-Chou, Xin-Si, etc.) requires examining the strength of the fate configuration. A focused Eating God (strong Eating God) brings children's honor; avoid the Partial Seal seizing the Eating God. A neutral Day Master maintains quietude in the chamber; strong yang stems and branches indicate managing and assisting the husband. Favor the proper禄, fear the Pool of Immortality (Xianchi); pure nobility gains the support of长生 (Long Life), while turbidity and defeated energy lead to failure. Many defeated elements in the Four Pillars avoid clashing with the self or meeting combinations; a life of busyness or entertainment may follow. A damaged Seal Ribbon leads to conflict with in-laws; a beneficial Eating God benefits offspring. Repeated Official and Killing Stars guard against promiscuity;透出 (revealed) sisters compete for the husband. The魁罡 (Kuigang) indicates spiritual change; the Day Noble suggests stability. Strong Official and Killing Stars without control may lead to a life of entertainment or monasticism. "Elopement" refers to unofficial marriages, like Zhuo Wenjun eloping with Sima Xiangru. The body stem is the Day Master; the Golden Spirit hour refers to hours like Xin-Chou, Xin-Si, etc., forming metal configurations; the Day Noble refers to days like Gui-Mao, Gui-Si, etc.
The analysis of a woman's fate centers on the Husband Star (Official Star) and the Children Star (Eating God), emphasizing a pure configuration and balanced Five Elements. The Official Star represents marriage and social status, while the Eating God symbolizes offspring and blessings; harmful stars like the Hurting Officer and Official/Killing Stars often indicate adversity. Traditionally, a woman's fate should favor softness over strength; a weak body is considered auspicious, while a strong body often brings misfortune, reflecting ancient gender role perspectives.
The theory of female fate reflects the constraints imposed on women in ancient patriarchal societies, such as the dependency implied in "husband's honor, wife's nobility." Modern interpretations should extract the essence—the relationship between personality and circumstances revealed by the interplay of the Five Elements—rather than fixed destiny. For example, "mixed Official and Killing Stars" can be contemplated as the challenge of balancing multiple life roles (e.g., career and family), encouraging dynamic adaptation over fatalism.
