What is movement? Its intrinsic nature belongs to Yang, and Yang energy is inherently active and ceaseless. It is like the vigorous motion of celestial bodies 🌌, revolving endlessly in cycles. Thus, in the context of the Eight Characters (BaZi), the Heavenly Stems that appear on the surface are referred to as "movement." For example, if the Heavenly Stem of the BaZi contains Jia Wood (甲木), it can restrain the Wu Earth (戊土) in the Heavenly Stem of the Major Cycle (Da Yun), but it cannot harm the Wu Earth hidden in the Earthly Branches. This is because "movement" can only attack "movement," much like a man openly challenging another man 🤺, rather than attacking a woman hidden in a secluded chamber. Although no direct physical harm is caused, there is still an intimidating effect—just as a woman might feel fear upon seeing a man approaching to attack, even if she is not struck. Similarly, the Geng Metal (庚金) in the Earthly Branches of the Major Cycle cannot harm the Jia Wood revealed in the Heavenly Stems of the BaZi. From this, it is evident: The movement of Heavenly Stems can only attack the movement of other Heavenly Stems and cannot attack the stillness of Earthly Branches.
What is stillness? Its intrinsic nature belongs to Yin, and Yin energy is inherently still and preservative. It is like the earth bearing all things ⛰️, stable, tranquil, and unchanging. Thus, in the context of the BaZi, the Earthly Branches hidden beneath are referred to as "stillness." For example, if the Earthly Branches of the BaZi contain Geng Metal (庚金), it can restrain the Jia Wood (甲木) in the Earthly Branches of the Major Cycle but cannot harm the Jia Wood in the Heavenly Stems of the Major Cycle. "Stillness" can only attack "stillness," much like conflicts between women 👭, which seldom affect external men. Although there is no direct physical attack, there is still a disruptive effect. Just as the Geng Metal in the Earthly Branches of the Major Cycle cannot damage the Jia Wood in the Heavenly Stems of the BaZi. Therefore: The stillness of Earthly Branches can only attack the stillness of other Earthly Branches and cannot attack the movement of Heavenly Stems.
Additionally, the four Earthly Branches—Chen (辰), Xu (戌), Chou (丑), and Wei (未)—are the "storage vaults" of the universe 🧳, collecting all things and being extremely secure. Suppose the Earthly Branches of the BaZi contain Chen Earth (辰土), which internally stores Wu Earth (戊土), Yi Wood (乙木), and Gui Water (癸水). Even if the Major Cycle reaches Yin (寅, which contains Jia Wood), Jia Wood cannot break the Wu Earth within Chen. If it reaches You (酉, which contains Xin Metal), Xin Metal cannot harm the Yi Wood within Chen. If it reaches Wu (午, which contains Ji Earth), Ji Earth cannot restrain the Gui Water within Chen. It is not that they are entirely incapable of breaking through, but rather that the vault door is tightly locked 🔒. It must be "impacted" (冲, Chong) to open—for example, Xu (戌) impacting Chen (辰) is like using a key to unlock the vault, releasing the Wu Earth, Yi Wood, and Gui Water. Similarly, the Chou (丑) vault requires Wei (未) to impact it, as other methods are insufficient to breach it. Hence, the saying in destiny analysis: "Mixed Qi wealth requires impact" stems from this principle.
