What is "head covering" (盖头)? 🌫️ It can be likened to the human body: the head is the most exposed and prominent part. The head is connected to the face, with the eyes, ears, and nose all concentrated on it, collectively referred to as the "head." Defects in the limbs or abdomen below the body can be concealed with clothing, but everything on the head and face is directly exposed and cannot be hidden, making it more easily noticeable and influential on one's fate. The same principle applies in Eight Characters (Bazi) metaphysics.
In Bazi, the four Heavenly Stems (天干) above represent the "head and face" 🧠, while the four Earthly Branches (地支) below represent the "abdomen and limbs" 🦵. The hidden stems within the Earthly Branches (藏干) symbolize the "internal organs" ❤️. If the auspicious energy (秀气) within the Earthly Branches can surface to the Heavenly Stems, it is like inner talent manifesting outwardly, allowing one’s lifetime fortunes—wealth, poverty, or low status—to be directly judged from the surface. For example, if a Bazi configuration忌讳伤官 (dislikes the Officer-Harming element), but the Officer-Harming element is hidden within the Earthly Branches, it is not yet overly alarming. However, once the Officer-Harming element surfaces to the Heavenly Stems, it becomes publicly visible on the "head and face," impossible to conceal. Any harmful element, once exposed on the "head and face," becomes active and causes damage.
Specific example: For a person with a Day Master of乙 (Wood), if丙丁 (Fire) serves as the Officer-Harming element and it is excessively strong, then庚 (Metal) as the Officer Star becomes the root of the problem. If庚 appears in the Bazi configuration,丙丁 Fire is needed to restrain it as a remedy. During early luck periods like壬申 (Water-Metal) and癸酉 (Water-Metal), the fortune is unfavorable because壬癸 Water "covers" the申酉 Metal (Heavenly Stem Water covers Earthly Branch Metal). The Water "covering the head" strengthens the negative effects of Metal. Later, during甲戌 (Wood-Earth) and乙亥 (Wood-Water) luck periods, the fortune improves because甲乙 Wood "covers the head" (Wood generates Fire, which restrains Metal). The丙子 (Fire-Water) and丁丑 (Fire-Earth) luck periods are even better, as丙丁 Fire directly "covers the head" and restrains庚 Metal. Even if the Earthly Branches contain亥子丑 Water, the Water is "covered" by Fire and cannot cause harm.
Another example: For persons with Day Masters of庚 or辛 (Metal),甲乙 Wood and丙丁 Fire are favorable as auspicious elements, while庚辛 Metal and壬癸 Water are disliked as problematic elements. During luck periods, if甲乙 or丙丁 appear on the Heavenly Stems and "cover the head," it indicates good fortune. If庚辛 or壬癸 "cover the head," it signifies bad fortune. Even if the Earthly Branches of the luck period contain甲乙 or丙丁 auspicious elements, if they are "covered" by庚辛 or壬癸 on the Heavenly Stems, the auspicious elements cannot exert their positive effects because they are suppressed and unable to "surface."
By observing the phenomenon of "head covering" in Bazi, one can quickly discern the trends of fortune and misfortune in a person’s life. This is a secret true transmission within Bazi studies. ⚡
