The Zi Yao Si Pattern is a special configuration in Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny) analysis 🌊, based on the combination of the day pillar Jiazi (甲子) and the hour pillar Jiazi (甲子). Its core principle involves the distant interaction between the Gui Water (癸水) in the Zi (子) branch 🌊 and the Wu Earth (戊土) in the Si (巳) branch ⛰. This interaction activates the Bing Fire (丙火) 🔥 in Si, which then combines with the Xin Metal (辛金), allowing the Jia Wood (甲木) to obtain Xin Metal as its Officer Star (representing career and authority). This pattern is disrupted if the four pillars contain Geng Metal (庚金), the Seven Killings star, as it obstructs the function of Jia Wood. It is also unfavorable to have the earthly branches Shen (申), You (酉), Chou (丑), or Wu (午), as they can break the distant combination mechanism.
Traditionally, this pattern requires the month branch to facilitate Wood qi (e.g., spring or winter months) and a strong Day Master (身旺) to be valid. If the month branch indicates another standard pattern (e.g., Wealth & Officer pattern), that standard pattern should take precedence; the Zi Yao Si Pattern is only considered if no standard pattern applies. In practice, while sometimes questioned, this pattern has proven effective repeatedly ⚡. Fortunes are unfavorable in the West (Shen, You, Xu) or metal-dominated cycles (e.g., Si-You-Chou), as they can solidify the Officer Star, rendering it ineffective.
The Xiji Pian (喜忌篇) emphasizes: For a Jiazi day and Zi hour, avoid the characters Geng, Xin, Shen, You, Chou, and Wu.
Historical Controversy: Older texts suggest this pattern cannot coexist with the Officer Star. However, the Gejie (格解) proposes that when the Day Master is extremely strong (e.g., Wood flourishing in spring or Water abundant in winter), entering an Officer luck cycle can反而 bring wealth and nobility. This reflects the concept of "adaptation and change" (通变) — flourishing Wood needs Metal's carving to become useful 🎯; having both Officer and Seal stars complete the noble profile. Therefore, one should not rigidly avoid the Officer Star but judge flexibly based on the Five Elements' balance in the specific chart. If the month branch indicates patterns like Hurting Officer, Eating God, or Wealth & Officer, the analysis should follow the Six Standard Patterns, not force the Zi Yao Si Pattern, lest a slight deviation leads to a great error ❌.
Case Evidence:
Summarized in Zhegutian lyrics: Jiazi day and hour complete, distant combination brings nobility; Gui Water moves Si, Bing Fire-Wu Earth combine power; wealth and blessings abound, commoner becomes high official; avoid Geng, Xin, Shen, You, Chou, Wu; nobility can last forty years 🌟.
The essence of the Zi Yao Si Pattern is the "distant combination" mechanism: Using the Gui Water (癸水) 🌊 in the Zi branch to indirectly activate the Wu Earth (戊土) ⛰ and Bing Fire (丙火) 🔥 in the Si branch, ultimately combining to produce the Xin Metal Officer Star. This reflects the philosophy of "indirect interaction" in Bazi — connections exist indirectly rather than being directly visible. The key is a strong Day Master (sufficient Wood qi) and the absence of disruptive factors (e.g., Geng Metal, Chou, Wu) to successfully obtain nobility.
In modern terms, this pattern can be analogized to "resource integration and indirect achievement" 🎯. For instance, in a career context, gaining promotion opportunities (Officer Star) indirectly through connections or environmental factors (like Water generating Wood), rather than through direct competition. But note:
Modern Scenario Application Suggestions:
If this pattern is identified, it can translate into decision-making points:
This pattern contains the Eastern philosophy of "indirectness" and "adaptation" (通变):
