The Well Curb Pattern is a configuration in Eight Characters (Bazi) destiny analysis, specifically referring to individuals born on a Geng day (i.e., the day pillar's heavenly stem is Geng). The earthly branches must completely include Shen, Zi, and Chen, forming the Triple Combination Water Bureau (Run Xia Pattern), which impacts the Wu fire (representing wealth and authority). Geng metal takes Ding fire as the officer star (🔥 authority) and Wei earth as the wealth star (⛰ wealth). The Shen-Zi-Chen water bureau can clash against and overcome the Yin-Wu-Xu fire bureau, thereby indirectly obtaining wealth, authority, and seal. This pattern fears the appearance of the characters Yin, Wu, Xu in the earthly branches, as they would disrupt the configuration.
When the pattern is successfully formed, it favors luck in the North water direction 🌊, but dislikes the South fire direction 🔥 or excessively strong Ren and Gui water luck (as excessive Drain Officer may drain the energy too much). If the hour pillar is Bing Zi (Partial Officer) or Shen hour (Return to Salary Pattern), blessings will be halved, resulting only in empty fame and meager profits.
Classical annotations emphasize: having Shen, Zi, and Chen complete in the four pillars is noble; it is not necessary to have three Geng Zi, but having more Geng is even better. It dislikes the directions of Ren, Gui, Si, and Wu, meaning it fears the Drain Officer in the North and the Officer-Killing luck in the South.
Supplementary explanation: The dislike for Ren and Gui is because excessively strong water can cause the Drain Officer to drain energy too severely, leading to disasters. A poem Zhe Gu Tian summarizes: Geng day with Shen, Zi, Chen complete, combines with the Officer Star; meeting Si, Wu, Wei brings suffering; Ren and Gui break it, Bing and Ding clash it; if luck is unbroken, it manifests nobility.
Case study: Wang Fengjun, with the Bazi Gui Mao, Geng Shen, Geng Zi, Geng Chen, fits this pattern. He achieved official success and fame and was enfeoffed as a Censor. However, during the Ren Zi luck (strong Drain Officer) and the Gui Hai year (excessively strong water), the Drain Officer drained energy too severely, leading to his death, which confirms the warning against Ren and Gui.
The essence of the Well Curb Pattern lies in utilizing the impacting force of the Triple Combination Water Bureau (Shen-Zi-Chen) to indirectly obtain wealth (Wei earth), authority (Wu fire), and seal (Xu earth). This is a pattern thinking that "uses impact as function," emphasizing dynamic balance and Five Elements interaction rather than static attributes. The key is that when the water bureau impacts the fire bureau, it does not directly harm the day master Geng metal but instead stimulates potential benefits.
This pattern reflects the traditional Chinese philosophical idea of "seeking stillness within movement": potential is stimulated through conflict (impact) rather than avoiding contradiction. However, it also warns that "excess is just as bad as deficiency"—an imbalance in the Five Elements (excessively strong water) disrupts harmony, reflecting the need for balance between change and stability in life. From a modern perspective, this can be analogized to the management philosophy of "innovation and risk control."
