Nan Yue: The Jia Se Pattern refers to when the day stem is Wu (戊) or Ji (己) earth, and the earthly branches contain many earth branches such as Chen (辰), Xu (戌), Chou (丑), or Wei (未), with no official or killing stars (wood stars) in the four pillars to restrain it. In such cases, this pattern can be adopted. 🌱 However, it is important to note that in Chou, Chen, or Xu months (earth months), if the four pillars consist purely of earth without wood restraint, they mostly fit this pattern. The fortune favors the southern fire-earth regions (fire generates earth) and the western metal fortune (metal can restrain wood), which often leads to wealth and honor. If wood fortune comes to break the earth pattern, it may bring disaster or even death. Specific examples can be referred to in the "Verification of Jia Se" category. When Wu or Ji days are born in the Wei month (earth is overly strong), they do not qualify for this pattern; only in Chen, Xu, or Chou months, where earth is relatively weak, does this pattern apply.
Ge Jie says: This pattern requires the day stem to be Wu or Ji earth, and the earthly branches must include all of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, with no wood to restrain it. If there is water as a useful element (earth restrains water as wealth), the pattern can be formed. The fortune favors the southwest (fire-earth-metal fortune) and dislikes the northeast (wood-water fortune).
Example of Zhang Zhenren's destiny:
Wu Xu (戊戌), Ji Wei (己未), Wu Chen (戊辰), Gui Chou (癸丑)
Poem:
Wu and Ji day stems born in the four earth months,
Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei must all be present.
Favor wealth (water) and dislike official/killing (wood),
Fortune reaching the east (wood fortune) will surely bring danger.
Another saying:
Both eastern wood fortune and northern water fortune are disliked, hence "disapprove of them."
The northeast is even more feared for its clashes (wood-water clashes).
Bi Yuan Fu states:
Wu and Ji pillars complete the four earth seasons,
Glory surpasses the ordinary.
Example of wealthy destiny: Ren Wu (壬午), Gui Chou (癸丑), Ji Chou (己丑), Wu Chen (戊辰)
Fucheng Zhang Hua’er’s wealthy destiny, complete earth Jia Se pattern.
Nan Yue: Ji earth born in the twelfth month (Chou month),
Earth energy is heavy, cold earth can achieve the merit of crops and harvest.
But subtle wood energy mixed in is a flaw,
When metal fortune arrives, wealth will be abundant. 💰
Ji earth born in the twelfth month, day sitting on earth branches,
Four pillars pure earth, earth energy cold,
Can be considered a complete earth Jia Se pattern.
Relies on the subtle water energy in Chen hour (Gui water),
Secretly harming the earth pattern—is this not a flaw?
Early years in eastern Jia Yin (甲寅), Yi Mao (乙卯) wood fortune,
Drawing out the Yi wood in Chen to restrain earth, very unfavorable.
When fortune reaches Bing Chen (丙辰), Ding Si (丁巳), Wu Wu (戊午), Ji Wei (己未) fire-earth fortune,
Weak earth favors support, wealth reaches hundreds of thousands.
Then entering Geng Shen (庚申), Xin You (辛酉), Ren Xu (壬戌) metal fortune,
Restraining all Yi wood flaw in Chen, wealth becomes unparalleled.
Only when entering Hai fortune (combining wood) does death occur,
Long life and abundant blessings are natural.
Another example: Ren Wu (壬午), Gui Chou (癸丑), Ji Chou (己丑), Ji Si (己巳),
Because Si and Chou combine into a metal formation,
It is only considered a hurt officer pattern, not Jia Se,
And poverty with deafness, only working as a mediocre doctor,
Due to hurt officer pattern encountering declining wealth fortune.
The Jia Se Pattern is a special destiny pattern based on the prosperity of the earth element in the Five Elements theory. It emphasizes the stability,包容性 (inclusiveness), and generative characteristics of earth. It requires the day stem to be Wu or Ji earth, with numerous earth branches in the earthly branches and no wood to break it, maintaining the purity of earth. If the pattern is formed, it leads to wealth and honor; if broken, it brings disaster. This reflects the core ideas of Five Elements balance and the relationships of generation and restraint.
In a modern context, the Jia Se Pattern symbolizes practicality, stability, and accumulation. Earth represents foundational industries such as construction, agriculture, and real estate, making it suitable for stable careers or investments. Disliking wood fortune (east) corresponds to periods of change, competition, or pressure in reality, suggesting avoidance of high-risk decisions. Metal fortune (west) helps resolve conflicts and enhance stability. Cold earth requires fire for adjustment (south fortune), analogous to needing a warm environment or enthusiastic support to unlock potential.
The Jia Se Pattern is deeply rooted in the ancient Chinese philosophy of "harmony between heaven and humanity," emphasizing the balance between environment and the individual. The virtue of earth symbolizes bearing and nurturing, reminding modern people to value foundations, patience, and sustainability. The generation and restraint of the Five Elements reflect dynamic balance, inspiring flexibility and the principle of overcoming hardness with softness in life.
