The Qūzhí Rénshòu Gé is a special pattern in Bazi analysis. It is formed when the Day Master is Jia Wood (甲) or Yi Wood (乙), and the Earthly Branches simultaneously contain Yin (寅), Mao (卯), and Chen (辰) (known as the "Complete Eastern Wood Bureau") or Hai (亥), Mao (卯), and Wei (未) (known as the "Triple Harmony Wood Bureau"). Furthermore, the Heavenly Stems must contain absolutely no Metal elements like Geng (庚) or Xin (辛) to破坏 (break/disrupt) the pattern. Individuals with this pattern often possess characteristics of benevolence and longevity. In terms of fortune, they are particularly suited to Wood (East) or Water (North) major life cycles (大运), and should strongly avoid encountering Metal (West) cycles, especially Earthly Branches like Shen (申) and You (酉), as these can severely damage the inherent elegance (秀气) of the pattern.
This pattern emphasizes the purity and vigor of Wood Qi. Wood, in the Five Elements, represents benevolence, growth, and vitality. Having the Earthly Branches form a complete Wood Bureau signifies highly concentrated energy, endowing the individual with a benevolent and long-lived disposition. However, just as trees fear being cut by an axe, this pattern most fears Metal to damage it. The appearance of Metal elements like Geng, Xin, Shen, or You breaks the pattern and is considered inauspicious.
"Qūzhí" (曲直) is derived from the characteristic of Wood in the Five Elements theory, meaning "can bend and can be straight" –它既能柔韧适应,也能向上生长 (It can be both flexible and adaptable, as well as grow upwards). This pattern embodies the Chinese philosophical idea of correspondence between heaven and humanity (天人相应) – the Earthly Branches gather the Wood Qi of the East, where celestial and terrestrial conditions facilitate a disposition for benevolence and longevity. However, it also requires staying away from destructive elements in later life and nurturing one's Qi to achieve fulfillment.
Male Chart: Jiǎ Yín (甲寅) Dīng Mǎo (丁卯) Yǐ Wèi (乙未) Bǐng Zǐ (丙子)
This destiny has Yi Wood born in Mao month. The Earthly Branches Yín, Mǎo, Wèi gather Wood Qi 🌳. Although Yín-Mǎo-Chén is not complete, the Hài-Mǎo-Wèi Triple Harmony Wood Bureau is formed. Furthermore, there are no Geng or Xin Metal in the Heavenly Stems,符合 (conforming to) the "Qūzhí Rénshòu Gé". The Wood and Fire are bright (木火通明), with the Hurting Officer and Dining God透出 (showing/emanating), indicating a talented individual who is willing to contribute. However, as strong Wood Qi is泄秀 (drained/expressed) by Fire, it also suggests fame spreading far and wide.
Male Chart: Rén Yín (壬寅) Guǐ Mǎo (癸卯) Jiǎ Zǐ (甲子) Wù Chén (戊辰)
This destiny has Jia Wood born in Mao month. The Earthly Branches Yín, Mǎo, Chén form the complete Eastern Wood Bureau 🌳. Water and Wood mutually generate each other (水木相生), resulting in pure Wood Qi forming a "Category Image" (类象). The Hour Pillar Wù Chén has Partial Wealth sitting on a reservoir (库), indicating someone who, although charitable and compassionate towards the lonely and poor, also possesses financial management skills. This chart has no Metal to break the pattern, so it successfully forms the pattern, resulting in a benevolent person capable of accumulating wealth.
If the Day Master is Jia Wood, and the Earthly Branches contain Shēn Metal (e.g., born on a Jiǎ Shēn day), Shēn Metal冲克 (clashes and overcomes) Yín Wood,破坏 (damaging) the pure Qi of the Wood Bureau, thus "breaking the pattern" (破格). The original text points out that such individuals反而 (conversely) experience poverty and hardship,甚至 (even to the extent) that encountering a Shēn cycle can endanger their life. This illustrates that the purity of the pattern is extremely critical; once broken, the beneficial power is completely lost.
Some scholars interpret "strong Wood implies benevolence and longevity" from a psychological perspective, suggesting that individuals dominated by Wood Qi often have relaxed emotions and empathy. The harmony between mind and body thus contributes to longevity, aligning with the modern concept of "psycho-physiological health" interaction.
