The Xiji Pian states: When the earthly branches form the Arching Lu or Arching Gui pattern, if they become "filled" (i.e., the original earthly branch appears), it turns into an inauspicious sign🌪.
Additional note: "Lu" refers to the Lu at the临官 position (e.g., Jia seeing Yin as Lu), and "Gui" refers to the正官 star (e.g., Jia seeing Xin as官), not the Tianyi Guiren (Heavenly Virtue Nobleman)❌. The Gejie mistakenly interprets Arching Lu as Arching Wealth and Arching Gui as Arching Tianyi Guiren, which is inaccurate. The Arching Lu pattern has five combinations, and none of these Lu positions involve wealth stars—how can it be called Arching Wealth? Although the Arching Gui pattern includes five days and four hours, and some involve the Tianyi Guiren, its core is arching the官 star (e.g., a Jia day master arches Xin as官), not simply arching the Tianyi Guiren.
If these two patterns are pure and unbroken, they indicate great nobility📈. They favor strong self-element, 印绶 (seal ribbon), 伤官 (hurt officer), and 食神 (eating god). They dislike 刑冲 (clashes and conflicts) in the day and hour of the arch (e.g., arching Zi water but encountering Wu to clash), and they also fear the appearance of 伤克日干的七杀 (the seven killings that harm the day master) in the four pillars, as these will破坏 the energy of Arching Lu and Arching Gui. Most importantly, they忌讳 the direct appearance of Lu or Gui in the four pillars (e.g., arching Zi water but already having Zi water in the八字), which is called "filling," akin to a container already full and unable to hold more energy⚱️. They also忌讳 Lu or Gui falling into 空亡 (empty death).
Zhegutian summarizes:
Jiayin and Jiazi arch Chou Gui, Wuchen and Wuwu hide Lu within.
Encountering clashes, filling, or empty death, official positions collapse and disaster is hard to avoid⚡.
If the pattern is unbroken and the官 star is revealed, one rises swiftly and gains fame.
Holding authority up to the三公 (Three Dukes), donning purple robes and golden belts to meet the emperor👑.
Q: Sanche says it favors伤官 and食神, but an ancient song says "fear伤官 in the month branch." Why the contradiction?
A: The two perspectives differ. Gejie points out: If the命局 has wealth stars, it favors伤官 and食神 to generate wealth. If there is no wealth and印 is strong, then伤官 will克制 the官 star (source of nobility), making伤官 in the month branch a忌⚠️.
Q: Gejie mentions that "Guiyou Day + Guihai Hour" can arch Xu中的戊土 as官 Gui. Why is this not adopted in the original annotation?
A: This is incorrect! Guiyou Day falls in the甲子旬, where Xu and Hai are precisely空亡. Arching空亡 makes the nobleman powerless and instead forms the "天中杀 (sky-middle kill)" (空亡煞), so it cannot be used❌.
Virtual Arching as Utility: The essence of the pattern lies in its "virtual" nature (implied but not directly appearing), like an unopened container capable of holding energy. Once filled, its function is lost. It emphasizes the cleverness of structure and implied potential.
The dialectical relationship between "virtual" and "real": Chinese philosophy values "being and non-being generating each other." The arching patterns reflect the wisdom of using emptiness to carry fullness. In personal development, leaving blank spaces and remaining hidden often provide more strategic resilience than fully revealing oneself.
