Overall Meaning Translation
The Eight Methods of Spirit and Interest is an analytical approach in Four Pillars of Destiny (Bazi) that identifies eight special patterns by categorizing the morphological characteristics of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches combinations to determine life trends. This chapter elaborates on the formation conditions and key points for judging the auspicious or inauspicious nature of the eight patterns: Likeness, Belonging, Following, Transforming, Illuminating, Returning, Ghost, and Latent. 🌿
Original Case: Ding Mao, Jia Chen, Jia Yin, Jia Zi
This birth chart features three Jia Wood (甲) in the Heavenly Stems 🌳, while the Earthly Branches Yin, Mao, and Chen combine to form the complete Eastern Wood configuration, creating a Likeness Pattern. The Year Stem Ding Fire acts as the Injury Officer, which can channel the wood's elegance, forming the imagery of "Fire Illuminating Wood's Elegance." It favors Water luck (North direction) to nourish its foundation and also requires Metal (Geng and Xin) to trim the excessively strong wood energy, thereby achieving wealth and nobility.
Core Concept 💡
Likeness refers to a pure combination of Stems and Branches forming the same elemental aura (e.g., an all-wood configuration). The key lies in maintaining elegance and coherence, avoiding luck of decay or extinction that disrupts the pattern.
Modern Interpretation 🌟
Practical Value ⚡
Earthly Branches Hai, Mao, and Wei form the triple-combination wood configuration, with Jia or Yi Wood (甲乙)透出 in the Heavenly Stems 🌱. Requires pure wood energy without disruption; those with this pattern possess benevolent virtues.
When the Day Master lacks root, it follows the strongest element:
Conditions for Heavenly Stems' five combinations transforming into Qi:
The Hour Pillar provides
The Monthly Useful God reaches the position of decay or extinction in the Hour Branch ⚠️, creating a contradictory state of "useful yet not useful." Indicates energy decline in later life stages.
Autumn Wood (Jia or Yi) encounters all-Metal Earthly Branches ⚔️, treating Metal as the ghost. Requires strong Metal luck (ghost gaining power) for auspiciousness; weak Metal luck brings inauspiciousness.
Hidden Stems in triple-combination configurations emerge: e.g., Yin-Wu-Xu Fire configuration, Ren Day Master without root, takes Ding Fire hidden in Wu to combine with Ren and latent Fire. Favors Fire or Earth luck; dislikes strong Water.

The essence of the Eight Methods is the unification and transformation of Five Elements' energy:
