When the main hexagram lacks Wealth but the changed hexagram has it, or when the World line's Wealth Star is dead and exhausted but transforms into liveliness, it indicates poverty first then wealth. When the main hexagram has Wealth but the changed hexagram lacks it, or when the World line's Wealth Star is lively but transforms into death, emptiness, or monthly break, it indicates wealth first then poverty.
As for the cases where the World line's Sibling is empty and moves, and Wealth Star and Offspring are lifeless; when the Fundamental Palace is dormant, empty, and the World line is rushed by the Daily Chen, carrying Sibling, Officer Ghost, Two Depletion Stars, or Broken Fragment Star; when the Useful God Wealth Star is dead and exhausted; when the Useful God transforms into emptiness, exhaustion, death, break, or transforms into Officer Ghost or Sibling; when among the six lines there is no Wealth Star; when the Wealth Star is hidden beneath the Officer Ghost—all the above cases indicate poverty.
To know what affair causes ruin of the household, just look at which kind of Sibling line moves upon the Useful God. When Sibling plus Azure Dragon moves, it indicates losing money through joyful matters, such as refined pursuits, associating with officials, marriage, seeking office, purchasing concubines, or building houses. When Sibling plus Vermilion Bird moves, it indicates losing money through disputes, such as verbal clashes, associating with clerks and functionaries, entering government offices, or fighting over money in lawsuits. When Sibling plus Earth Hook moves, it indicates losing money through pride and aspiration, such as extravagantly building houses, greedily buying fields, having overlapping and unclear deeds, or entrusting money to others for lending and having it absconded. When Sibling plus Snake moves, it indicates losing money through delusion, such as credulously believing strange doctrines, praying to spirits and making vows, staging operas and ceremonies, or acting as guarantor and becoming implicated. When Sibling plus White Tiger moves, it indicates losing money through violent matters, such as overlapping funerals and mourning, disputes over inheritance, falsely accusing someone of murder, or being harmed or murdered. When Sibling plus Dark Martial moves, it indicates losing money through carelessness, such as being implicated by thieves, having money owed and being deceived, gambling and whoring, or associating with petty people and women, giving rise to troubles.
The above concerns determining wealth and poverty. To calculate the amount of family assets, take the Wealth line's Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch from the Nailia system, matched with the Former Heaven numbers to calculate: Jia, Ji, Zi, Wu are nine; Yi, Geng, Chou, Wei are eight; Bing, Xin, Yin, Shen are seven; Ding, Ren, Mao, You are six; Wu, Gui, Chen, Xu are five; Si, Hai always add four.
All take the Wealth Star appearing in the Fundamental Palace as the main calculation; if the Wealth Star is hidden, take the hidden wealth. If two Wealth lines appear in the hexagram, then take both lines' numbers. There is also the "Great Image" (the hexagram palace itself) as Wealth of the Fundamental Palace; one also takes that hexagram's stems and branches for combined calculation. For example, Ren Shen and Xu Hai belong to Qian; Yi Gui and Wei Shen belong to Kun; Bing Chou and Yin belong to Gen; Xin Chen and Si belong to Xun; Wu Zi belongs to Kan; Si Wu belongs to Li; Geng Mao belongs to Zhen; Ding You belongs to Dui.
For example, in the Pure Qian hexagram, the second line Jia Yin is the Wealth line: Jia is nine, Yin is seven, totaling sixteen. If it is a very wealthy family, then ten progresses to thousand and six progresses to hundred, i.e., sixteen thousand taels of silver. For middle-class wealth, ten progresses to hundred and six progresses to ten, i.e., sixteen hundred. For lower-class wealth, ten progresses to ten and six progresses to ten, i.e., one hundred sixty. If it is a small household, then only use the Five Elements number calculation: one water, two fire, three wood, four metal, five earth. For example, Yin wood wealth in the Qian Palace, wood is three, one advances ten to thirty taels.
In the above numbers, when prosperous and vigorous, double them; when resting and dormant, use the original number; when imprisoned and dead, halve them. If the Grand Duke Jupiter with Nobleman, Traveling Horse, Virtue, and Salary Star all gather on the Wealth line, add one more time. When the Monthly Virtue with Nobleman, Horse, Fortune, and Salary gather on the Wealth line, add half. When the Grand Duke Jupiter punishes and breaks the Wealth line, subtract half; when the Monthly Virtue punishes and breaks the Wealth, subtract one third. If beneficial and harmful influences coexist, then neither add nor subtract—take only the original number.
There are also cases where both the line and palace are empty, broken, dead, and exhausted. For example, in the year Jia Shen, month Ren Shen, in the Jia Zi cycle, day Geng Wu, divining the Pure Qian hexagram: the Wealth line Yin wood is punished and broken by the year and month Shen metal, and dies in the day's Wu fire; moreover, the Fundamental Palace's Xu and Hai are KONG (empty) in the Jia Zi cycle. In this configuration, even with wealth like Shi Chong's, one would lose everything in the blink of an eye.
Another example, the Tian Feng Gou hexagram: among the six lines there is no Wealth Star appearing. Xun is Wood, which is also the Wealth of the Qian Palace (the Wealth of Qian Palace is wood, Xun trigram belongs to wood, therefore the Xun palace serves as the Image of Wealth). Beneath the second line of the Xun palace is hidden the Fundamental Palace's Jia Yin Wealth line. The Xun hexagram's Heavenly Stem is Xin (seven), Earthly Branches Chen (five) and Si (four), totaling sixteen. Adding the hidden line Jia Yin also totals sixteen, in all thirty-two. Great wealth then thirty progresses to three thousand, two progresses to two hundred, i.e., thirty-two thousand taels; middle-class wealth, thirty progresses to three hundred, two progresses to twenty, i.e., three thousand two hundred taels; small wealth, ten progresses to ten, two progresses to two, i.e., three hundred twenty taels. Each is derived by the ten-fold method. Small households also use the Five Elements numbers, advancing ten to derive, as above.
Prosperous and vigorous doubles; resting and dormant uses original numbers; imprisoned and dead halves. Year and month noble omen versus punishment and breaking, all follow the former examples for increase and decrease (above from the "Lamp Divination Method").
Whenever determining noble or base, rich or poor, whether distant or near ancestors, nine generations of relatives, people from distant places and villages, or officials and lowly persons, all are determined by this method. One must also know: the auspicious, when encountering death, tomb, exhaustion, fetus, punishment, harm, overcome, and break, suffer diminished fortune; the inauspicious, when encountering Nobleman, Traveling Horse, Virtue, Spirit of Joy, Azure Dragon, and Offspring that generate and unite, reduced disaster. One cannot apply fixed rules rigidly.
The "King Spirit Classic" says: The misfortunes and fortunes encountered in human life change without constancy; all are taken from the Six Spirits. When the Six Spirits generate union, each responds with its fortune; when the Six Spirits harm and overcome, each responds with its disaster. However, among the Six Spirits, the one on which the Grand Duke Jupiter of the divination time descends is supreme; the Monthly Clime's Greater Six Spirits are secondary; the Daily Clime's Lesser Six Spirits are again secondary.
All Six Spirits delight in "meeting favor" and should "return to their barracks." Overcoming the Taboo Spirit and generating the Useful God are auspicious; overcoming the Useful God and generating the Taboo Spirit are inauspicious.
What is called "meeting favor"? The Azure Dragon entering water (wood entering water), the Vermilion Bird entering wood (fire entering wood), the Earth Hook entering fire (earth entering fire), the Snake entering wood (fire into wood), the White Tiger entering earth (metal into earth), the Dark Martial entering metal (water into metal)—these are the Six Spirits each receiving their generating favor. What is called "returning to barracks"? In the spring months, the Azure Dragon holds authority; in the summer months, the Vermilion Bird holds authority; in the autumn months, the White Tiger holds authority; in the winter months, the Dark Martial holds authority; in the third and ninth months, Earth Hook holds authority; in the sixth and twelfth months, Snake holds authority—these are the seasonal methods of "returning to barracks." The Azure Dragon entering wood, the Vermilion Bird entering fire, the Earth Hook entering Chen and Xu, the Snake entering Chou and Wei, the White Tiger entering metal, and the Dark Martial entering water—these are the fundamental images of "returning to barracks."
Azure Dragon descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter and moving in the outer trigram: within the year, promotion in office, increase in wealth, and increase in salary. Joining with the Heavenly Horse: sharing joy with the multitude; adding the Traveling Horse: one's own joyful event. Moving in the inner trigram, adding the Virtue Star, Six Harmonies, Offspring, or Spirit of Joy: pregnancy, marriage, celebration. If encountering inauspicious ghosts, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: joy in the midst of affairs instead invites disaster—through wine and women, or acting as guarantor, matchmaking, or performing good deeds with vows, or going to festive homes and thus incurring misfortune. For persons in official service, misfortune arises from mistakes in promotion, recommendation, congratulations, or gift-giving.
Vermilion Bird descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter and moving in the outer trigram: favorable events of promotion, official advancement, examination success, and documents. Moving in the inner trigram: separation, fire scares, disputes, and official lawsuits. Adding Sibling, Officer Ghost, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: disaster born from anger—through documents, family letters, loud quarrels, lawsuits, or going to conflagrations, artillery, or firearms places, and the like. For officials, misfortune may arise from errors in issued edicts, restoration documents, memorials, or detailed reports; or through satire and impeachment.
Earth Hook descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter, and Nobleman, Traveling Horse, and Wealth Salary in the outer trigram and moving: the favorable events of promotion, increase in salary, and adding fields. Moving in the inner trigram: disasters entangle and cannot escape. Adding the Official
Pendant: litigation over fields or marriage. Adding inauspicious ghosts, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: disasters through falls, fevers affecting many simultaneously, renovating houses, burial, fields, or going to graves. For officials, misfortune arises through errors in city walls, frontiers, fields, grain, and funds.
Snake descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter, in the outer trigram moving: seeking plans will encounter difficulty, external entanglements and dragging concerns. Moving in the inner trigram: unfounded scares, strange phenomena, restless dreams. Adding inauspicious ghosts, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: moving earth causing lawsuits, officials extorting without end; or becoming ill through fright; seeing apparitions; or being startled in dreams. For officials, misfortune arises through one's own deception or through being implicated by others.
White Tiger descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter, in the outer trigram moving: for military posts, promotion, all affairs of good fortune, business prospers. Moving in the inner trigram: blood light disasters, mourning clothes, weapons and unanticipated violence. Adding inauspicious ghosts, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: disaster through visiting mourning houses, places of combat and slaughter, or mistakenly entering tiger or wolf dens. For officials, disaster arises through arms, civil turmoil, massacres, and punitive expeditions.
Dark Martial descending upon the Grand Duke Jupiter, in the outer trigram moving: traveling by boat will encounter bandits; if meeting auspicious spirits, one will decapitate or capture thieves, or gain boats, fish, salt, wine, and vinegar wealth. Moving in the inner trigram: at home, clandestine property theft or loss, and disasters for pregnant women. Adding ghosts, murders, punishment, harm, overcome, and break: disaster through water works, latrines, yin persons (women), wine houses and flower streets, or going traveling riverrs and seas. For officials, there will be crossing rivers and seas encountering thieves, indulging in lewdness toward servant-concubines, or hemorrhoidal leakage disasters (the Monthly Clime and Daily Clime Six Spirits follow these same judgments).
The "Zhouyi Xuanwu" (The Dark Enlightenment of Zhouyi) says: All Great Limits and Small Limits, when lively, bring Nobleman, Traveling Horse, Virtue Star, Six Harmonies, Fortune and Salary, Azure Dragon, Spirit of Joy, Wealth Star, and Offspring—their alignment is auspicious. When they meet death, tomb, exhaustion, fetus, plus punishment, harm, overcome, and break, with White Tiger, Snake, the Destroyed Spirit, the Robber Star, the Mourning Guest, the Funeral Gate, Blade of Yang, and the Great Murder: inauspicious. When the Limit line generates and unites with the World and Body lines, auspicious. When it rushes, punishes, overcomes, and harms the World and Body lines, inauspicious. An inauspicious limit should have rescue by the Virtue Star and Six Harmonies; an auspicious limit most should beware revenge by suffering harming among them. Encountering rush and overcome within auspiciousness: good within evil turns to harm. Encountering rescue within misfortune: harm within auspice has salvation. More good less bad is half-god; more bad less good is half-sin. If good and ill split evenly, neither worry nor joy results.
And another saying: Limit line moves—disaster and hardship will easily gather to one; the Limit line empty means the body flutters like tumbleweed. The Limit contacting the Heavenly Canopy (Chen) and Earthly Net (Xu), combined with ghost and murder, brings several years of things confounded and lost sight, as dreaming within a dream.
The "Chuan Wang Tou Yi" says: Limit vigorous has an embryo wherein fortune is gestating; Limit eviscerate gestates chaos— concealed good or boding harms lying till just hour arrive. Therefore, horoscope-revealing proofs harness again by Grand Duke when trippy times stir them to effect.
