Capítulo 1 de 14
神煞章
Upon detailed investigation of classical destiny texts, the foundation of the Zi Ping method lies in the Four Pillars and Five Elements. Examining the prosperity and decline of the Five Elements, studying their favorable and unfavorable relationships, differentiating their advance and retreat tendencies, and judging their likes and dislikes – this is the true "understanding" of the art of destiny. As for those extraordinary patterns, unusual structures, spirit stars, and nayin classifications, they are nothing more than fabrications created by busybodies, bearing no substantive connection to the auspicious or inauspicious outcomes of destiny. If one relies on these to interpret destinies, they will inevitably mistake right for wrong, truth for falsehood, and perpetuate errors, ultimately shrouding the principles of fortune and misfortune in obscurity.
This passage above comes from Ren Tieqiao's Exposition of the Deep Mysteries of the Drip Sky (Di Tian Sui Chan Wei), written during the Republican era. He advocated orthodox Five Element theory for destiny interpretation, examining prosperity and decline, analyzing favorable and unfavorable tendencies, and advancing and retreating fortunes, while discarding the systems of patterns, spirit stars, and nayin. It is precisely because of this that the vast realm of BaZi destiny theory has largely eluded him. This is not an attempt to assess Ren Tieqiao's merits or faults, but rather to point out a reality in the field of destiny studies: there are many who do not accept spirit star theories, and their support base is quite substantial – at the slightest disagreement, they dismiss spirit stars as superstition. One destiny enthusiast calling another destiny enthusiast superstitious – this in itself is indeed quite "superstitious" (confusing).
Orthodox Five Element theory of destiny interpretation is based on the cold, rigid metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, endlessly studying clash, punishment, combination, and harm along with prosperity and decline. Ultimately, it cannot escape the constraints of a simplistic Five Elements worldview, reducing human beings, emotions, and affairs to relationships among the Five Elements – generating and overcoming, punishing and harming – its level of discourse has limitations. Evolving to the Zi Ping destiny theory stage, the concept of patterns (ge ju) was introduced, incorporating the idea of Six Relations into the generating and overcoming framework, elevating from Five Elements interactions to Six Relations interactions, transforming the cosmic Five Elements theory into a mapping of social ethics such as ruler-minister, father-son, and husband-wife, upgrading the cold, simplistic theory into a pattern-based system more compatible with social structures. From Five Elements to Six Relations, and then deducting various BaZi structures from the Six Relations, the BaZi framework was constructed – but this is only the initial stage (foundations). Looking only at patterns, one cannot yet touch the flesh and blood of a BaZi chart, appearing too thin and uninteresting. With the addition of spirit stars, the study of BaZi becomes vibrant, brilliant, and intricately detailed.
How to determine whether a BaZi chart indicates constant wandering and toil? In addition to Five Elements clashing against each other, one can refer to the Traveling Horse (Yi Ma) ;
How to determine whether a BaZi chart indicates intelligence, love of learning, and academic excellence? Beyond Wealth, Officer, Seal, and Eating God, one can use School Star (Xue Tang) and Academy Star (Ci Guan) ;
How to determine whether a BaZi chart indicates turning danger into safety? Aside from a harmonious chart free of clashes and harms, one can also consult the Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue (Tian Yue Er De) ;
How to determine whether a BaZi chart indicates petty theft and unseemly behavior? It is indeed difficult to approach this from Five Elements and Six Relations alone, but Original Chen (Yuan Chen) and Salty Pool (Xian Chi) can serve as references.
And so on. (These applications cannot be arbitrarily applied; strict conditions of use apply.)
For those studying BaZi, spirit stars are the simplest and most brilliant system of knowledge. This body of knowledge can exist independently of patterns, and even interpreting destinies solely with spirit stars can sustain one's practice and endure for a long time. In the interpretation practices of many rural "Blind School" masters, spirit star theory occupies an extremely important position. One often sees them murmuring about spirit stars endlessly, tapping their fingers to locate spirit stars – hidden in every finger joint are *Salty Pool, Celestial Nobleman, *and Dying Spirits (Wang Shen)**, among others.
The above serves as an introduction. In the coming period, in addition to chart interpretation, we will continue to update knowledge related to spirit stars, elaborating in detail on the meanings and applications of each major spirit star, allowing those with the opportunity to initially apply spirit star theory in destiny interpretation and gradually advance to the ranks of spirit star experts.
The following outlines the sequence of presentation for each spirit star. Please stay tuned:
Salty Pool (Xian Chi), Calamity Saber (Jie Sha), Dying Spirit (Wang Shen), Original Chen (Yuan Chen), Traveling Horse (Yi Ma), General Star (Jiang Xing), Flowery Canopy (Hua Gai), School Star (Xue Tang), Academy Star (Ci Guan), Void Star (Kong Wang), Solitary and Widowed (Gu Gua), Separation Corner (Ge Jiao), Sickness Charm (Fu Bing), Entanglement and Noose (Gou Jiao), Celestial Nobleman (Tian Yi Gui Ren), Heavenly Moon Double Virtue (Tian Yue Er De), Dark Metal Calamity Star (An Jin De Sha), Celestial Net and Earth Net (Tian Luo Di Wang).
This preface reveals an important methodological divergence within the field of destiny studies: represented by Ren Tieqiao, the Orthodox Five Elements school advocates purely discussing destiny through the rise and fall of the Five Elements, their generating and overcoming, and favorable and unfavorable interactions, regarding spirit stars as heresy and fabrications; the preface's author, however, takes a stance that embraces both patterns and spirit stars, arguing that spirit stars are the crucial supplement that transforms BaZi analysis from mere "skeleton" to fully fleshed "body and blood."
The core argument can be summarized in three layers:
From a modern cognitive perspective, the debate over spirit stars is essentially the tension between "model simplicity" and "model richness."
Orthodox Five Elements theory parallels reductionism in physics – attempting to explain all phenomena with minimal variables (Five Elements clashing and generating, rise and fall). This approach is elegant and powerful, but when faced with the high complexity of human affairs, the explanatory power of reductionism encounters bottlenecks. Compressing all changes in human life into relationships among the Five Elements indeed risks losing nuance and depth.
The spirit star system is akin to multi-dimensional feature engineering in modern data analysis. Within the framework of basic Five Elements variables, additional dimensional tags are introduced (e.g., Traveling Horse = mobility, Flowery Canopy = solitary introspection, Celestial Nobleman = noble patronage), enabling destiny analysis to operate in a richer feature space. Each spirit star is essentially an empirically induced label – a "pattern recognition" tool cultivated through ancient observers' long-term observations.
The key modern interpretation: spirit stars are not supernatural mysticism, but rather a "system of categorizing human situations" established by ancient destiny practitioners (an interface of social tagging). In modern parlance, each spirit star corresponds to a typical life scenario or behavioral tendency. Its value lies in providing more analytical dimensions, not replacing the fundamental logic of Five Elements interactions.
In contemporary life, the spirit star system can offer the following practical values:
| Spirit Star | Modern Applications | Practical Suggestions |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling Horse (驿马) | Assess suitability for frequent business travel, cross-city development, remote work | Those with this star suit fluid careers – sales, logistics, e-commerce |
| School/Academy Stars (学堂/词馆) | Evaluate learning abilities and academic potential | Used for academic planning, exam strategies, continuing education choices |
| Heavenly/Monthly Virtue (天月二德) | Identify risk-resistance abilities and "turning misfortune into fortune" potential | Used as a risk-buffering reference indicator in major decisions |
| Flowery Canopy (华盖) | Assess introspective tendencies and creative thinking | Fit for research, arts, independent creative work requiring deep focus |
| Salty Pool (咸池) | Analyze interpersonal charm and emotional appeal | For understanding patterns of interpersonal interactions, especially in romance and social contexts |
Qing Boundary – Not to Be Blindly Applied: The original text is warned (“these descriptions carry restrictive application conditions – not blindly asserted-copy applied with set conditions!) citing:"Strict conditions of use.” Essentially – Zhu points ultimately saying all stars must analyze entire chart globally, combined with analyzing element behaviors that will then at higher discriminating more sound reading.** – This indicates a crucial methodological principle: spirit stars are reference dimensions, not determining factors.
The preface's observation layered with deep philosophical significance — " one destiny enthusiast calling another destiny enthusiast superstitious"- points to a deeper question: How are boundaries of knowledge assigned? (Who decides what logic-their known-boundary? knowledge setting for a belief-system?)
