Study of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians: The Conception Vessel (Ren Meridian)

The Conception Vessel is known as the "Sea of Yin Meridians" (the pivotal hub where all yin meridians of the body converge). Its main pathway originates deep within the lower abdomen below the Zhongji point, specifically in the perineal region between the anterior and posterior yin orifices. From there, it ascends outward and upward, passing through the Qugu point (located above the pubic symphysis, in the depression at the margin of the pubic hair), rising to the upper edge of the pubic hair to reach the Zhongji point (four cun below the navel, the Front-Mu point of the Bladder—a specific acupoint where visceral qi converges in the thoracic and abdominal regions). Here it travels in parallel within the abdominal cavity with the Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin, the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin, and the Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin. Continuing its course, it passes through the Guanyuan point (three cun below the navel, the Front-Mu point of the Small Intestine, and also a crossing point of the three yin meridians of the foot with the Conception Vessel), then through the Shimen point (also known as the Dantian or Mingmen, two cun below the navel, the Front-Mu point of the Sanjiao), and the Qihai point (one and a half cun below the navel, centered in a depression—called by the ancients the "Sea of Vital Qi" in men). It then ascends to the throat, where at the Tiantu point (four cun below the Adam's apple, in a depression) it intersects with the Yin Link Vessel (Yinwei Meridian); it then passes through the Lianquan point (above the Adam's apple, at the center beneath the tongue). Continuing upward to the chin, it passes through the Chengjiang point (in the depression below the lower lip, where it intersects with the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians and the Governor Vessel), encircles the lips, ascends to the junction of the gums, emerges from the mouth, runs in two branches across the face, connects to the center beneath both eyes, and terminates at the Chengqi point (seven fen below the eye, precisely in the depression directly below the pupil; one point on each side, two in total). Ancient records list a total of twenty-seven points on this meridian.

Neither the Nan Jing (Classic of Difficulties) nor the Jiayi Jing (A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) describe the Conception Vessel as extending below the face.

The collateral vessel between the Conception Vessel and the Thoroughfare Vessel is called Weiyi (i.e., Jiuwei). It descends below the Jiuwei and spreads through the abdomen. If this collateral vessel is affected by pathogenic excess, abdominal skin pain may occur; if affected by vital qi deficiency, skin itching may result. The Ling Shu (Spiritual Pivot) states: The center of the supraclavicular fossa, where the Conception Vessel passes, is called the Tiantu point; the pulsating areas on either side are the Renying points, belonging to the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. 🌿
