Effortless Wandering:
In the Northern Sea there is a fish, whose name is Kun. The Kun is so immense that we don't know how many thousands of miles it encompasses. It transforms into a bird, whose name is Peng. The Peng's back stretches so wide that we don't know how many thousands of miles it spans. When it rouses itself to fly, its wings are like clouds hanging from the edge of the sky. When the winds churn up the sea, this bird prepares to migrate to the Southern Sea. The Southern Sea is a natural celestial pool.
Qixie, a book of records, documents wonders and anomalies. This book says: "When the Peng migrates to the Southern Sea, its wings strike the water, roiling waves for three thousand miles. It rides the whirlwind, spiraling up to a height of ninety thousand li, carried upon the gale of the sixth month." The roaming air like wild horses, the swirling dust—all are the mutual breaths of living creatures blowing upon one another. The sky appears azure—is that its true color? Or is it because of its immense distant, unfathomable depths? When the great Peng looks down from high, it sees things in just this way.
Furthermore, without sufficient depth of water to hold it, great vessels would lack the buoyancy to float. Pour a cup of water into a shallow depression before a hall—a blade of grass rides upon it like a boat. Place a cup there, and it sticks fast, for the water is too shallow and the vessel too great. Without sufficient accumulated wind beneath it to lift it, there is no strength to bear the enormous wings. Thus, the Peng flew to ninety thousand li; the wind was beneath it, able to ride upon it. Only then it made its way.
🌱 The cicada and the little dove laughed at the great Peng, saying: "We dart and flit, soaring among the elms and sandalwood trees. Sometimes, if we don't quite reach our destination, we simply land on the earth—what need is there to fly ninety thousand li to the Southern Sea?" He who goes on an outing to the countryside prepares three meals and returns, his belly still full. He who travels a hundred li pounds grain the evening before. He who travels a thousand li accumulates provisions for three months. What do these two little creatures know of this?
Little understanding cannot match great understanding; short-lived existence cannot match long-lived existence. How do we know this is so? The morning mushroom can't conceive of the first or last days of the month; the cicada of a single season can't comprehend spring and autumn—this is what short-lived means. In the south of Chu there is a tree called Mingling, for which five hundred years is one spring, and five hundred years is another autumn. In high antiquity there was a tree called Da Chun, for which eight thousand years form a spring, and eight thousand years another autumn. Yet Peng Zu is celebrated simply for his longevity, and common folk compare themselves to him—is it not pitiable?
The words of Tang of Shang concerning Ji were akin to these: In the vast northern wastelands there lies a dark, deep sea—the natural celestial pool. Within it dwells a fish, several thousand li wide, whose length no one knows. Its name is Kun. There dwells also a bird, its name Peng, whose back is like Mount Tai, and whose wings are like clouds hanging from the edge of the sky. It rides the whirlwind, spiraling up to ninety thousand li, piercing through the clouds, bearing the azure sky upon its back, flying southward toward the Southern Sea.
The small quail laughed at it, saying: "Where does it intend to fly? I spring up with a flurry, and though I may reach merely a few zhang before descending, I soar amid the brushy thickets and peng-hao grass—that encompasses the very pinnacle of flight! Whither does it fly, then?" Such is the distinction between the small and the great.
Thus, those whose intellectual talent is sufficient for a single office, whose conduct is sufficient to win praise throughout a village, whose virtue is enough to please a single ruler, whose ability is enough to win the trust of their entire state—how they view themselves is precisely like the small quail. Yet Master Song Rong merely chuckled at them all. This was one who, when the whole world praised him, did not exert extra effort; when the whole world condemned him, was not dejected. He perceived the distinction between internal and external, discerned the boundaries of honor and disgrace—yet he stopped there. Toward earthly affairs or worldly fame, he was never anxious. Even so, there remained a level he could not yet reach.
Liezi rode the wind and voyaged forth, at ease in his elegance of spirit—perhaps surpassing the men of human standards concerning seek heed into ground without thought.
