Chapter 25 of 33
庄子
🌊 Zeyang (also known as Peng Yang, a person's name) traveled to the state of Chu. Yijie recommended him to the King of Chu, but the King did not receive him. Yijie returned. Peng Yang then met Wang Guo and asked, "Sir, why did you not recommend me to the King of Chu?" Wang Guo said, "I am not as good as Gong Yuexiu." Peng Yang asked, "What does Gong Yuexiu do?" Wang Guo said, "In winter he catches soft-shelled turtles in the river; in summer he rests among the mountains. When passersby ask him about it, he says, 'This is my home.' Even Yijie could not accomplish such a thing—how much less could I? Moreover, I am not equal to Yijie. This man Yijie has no De (true inner cultivation) but possesses cleverness and skill. He does not presume to be right, yet he uses his cleverness to manage human relations, and he is already deeply immersed in a world of wealth and honor. This is not using De to help others, but rather helping others erode their De. People who are cold long for spring; people suffering from heatstroke long for the cold wind of winter. The King of Chu's character is outwardly noble and majestic, and he shows no leniency whatsoever toward offenses—he is like a tiger. Unless one is an eloquent speaker or a person of true virtue, who could possibly change him? Therefore, when a sage is in difficulty, he can make his family forget his poverty; when he is in prominence, he can make dukes and kings forget their ranks and titles and become humble. Toward external things, he dwells in harmony with them; toward other people, he takes delight in communicating while also preserving himself. Thus, at times without speaking, he can benefit others through his gentle demeanor; when standing together with others, he can transform them. This is precisely the proper relationship between father and son. He lives in seclusion and contentment, and all his actions appear leisurely and unhurried. His influence on the human heart is so profound. Therefore it is said: 'We must await Gong Yuexiu.'"
🌱 The sage penetrates the tangled entanglements of all things, pervading them as one whole, yet he does not know why he is able to do so—this is inherent nature. He returns to the root of life and takes Heaven (nature) as his teacher, and for this reason people call him a sage. What is troubling is the cleverness of human artifice, for what is accomplished through it ceases before long; and if it ceases, what then can be done about it? A person who is naturally beautiful—if others give him a mirror but do not tell him, he will not know that he is more beautiful than others. It is as if he knows, and as if he does not know; as if he has heard, and as if he has not heard. His joy has no end, and others' fondness for him has no end—this is inherent nature. The sage's love for others is likewise: if others give him the name "sage" but do not tell him, he does not know that he is loving others. It is as if he knows, and as if he does not know; as if he has heard, and as if he has not heard. His love has no end, and others' ease in his love has no end—this is inherent nature.
🍃 Catching sight of an old capital, one feels a surge of joy at the very glimpse. Even if hills and woods cover seven or eight parts out of ten, still one feels joy—how much more when one sees what was originally seen and heard? It is like a ten-ren terrace suspended among the multitudes, where everything is clearly visible. Ran Xiangshi grasped the Ring's Center (the pivotal point of the Dao, the empty and lively center), following along with all things to complete them, having with all things neither beginning nor end, nor any sense of time. One who daily changes together with the ten thousand things maintains within himself an unchanging core. When has he ever abandoned it! Those who imitate Heaven yet fail to attain Heaven chase after things and lose their way. What can they accomplish by acting in this manner? The sage never clings to "Heaven," never clings to "humanity," never clings to "beginning," never clings to "things"—he moves with the world yet does not stagnate; what he accomplishes is complete yet not partial. How does he achieve such attunement?
⛰ King Tang of Shang obtained his imperial charioteer (an official title), and Menyin Denghuang served as his teacher. Tang followed his teacher yet was not constrained, acquiring the wisdom of following along with things and completing them. He administered titles and names for him; titles became full and the laws manifested themselves from both aspects. Confucius exhausted his deliberations and also made him his teacher. Rong Chengshi (a legendary ancient emperor) said: "Remove the days and there is no year; have no inner, and there is no outer."
🌿 Wei Ying (King Hui of Wei) and Tian Hou Mou (King Wei of Qi) concluded a covenant, but Tian Hou Mou betrayed the agreement. Wei Ying flew into a rage and planned to send an assassin to kill him. Xishou Gongsun Yan heard of this and felt ashamed, saying: "Your Majesty is the ruler of a ten-thousand-chariot state, yet you would take vengeance in the manner of a common man. Grant me two hundred thousand armored soldiers, and I will attack the state of Qi for you, capture their people, drive away their oxen and horses, and make the heart of the Qi ruler burn within him and sores break out on his back. Then I will seize his state. When Tian Ji flees, I will whip his back and snap his spine."
Ji Zi heard of this and likewise felt ashamed, saying: "When building a wall of ten ren, if it has already reached ten ren and you destroy it, this is a labor that exhausts the common people. Now for seven years there has been no war—this is Your Majesty's foundation. Gongsun Yan is a man who agitates the people's hearts; you must not listen to him."
Hua Zi heard of this and considered it detestable, saying: "One who argues well for attacking Qi is one who agitates the people's hearts; one who argues well for not attacking is also one who agitates the people's hearts; one who says that 'both those advocating attack and those advocating non-attack are agitators of the people's hearts' is still an agitator of the people's hearts."
The King of Wei said, "Then what should be done?" Hua Zi said, "Let Your Majesty simply pursue the Dao."
When Hui Shi heard of this, he introduced Dai Jinren. Dai Jinren said, "There is a thing called a snail—does Your Majesty know of it?" The King of Wei said, "I know." "On the left horn of the snail there is a state called Touch; on the right horn there is a state called Man. The two states constantly contend with each other over territory and go to war. Tens of thousands of soldiers die in battle, and they pursue routed troops for fifteen days before returning."
The King of Wei said, "Alas! Is this not empty talk?" Dai Jinren said, "Allow me to demonstrate its reality for Your Majesty. Does Your Majesty consider the four directions and above and below to have an end?" The King of Wei said, "They are without end." Dai Jinren said, "When one knows how to wander the mind in the realm of the infinite, and then looks back upon the states that are reachable (the Central Plains), is it not as if they exist and yet do not exist?" The King of Wei said, "It is so." Dai Jinren said, "Within the reachable world, there is the state of Wei; within the state of Wei, there is the city of Liang; within the city of Liang, there is Your Majesty. Is there any distinction between Your Majesty and the state of Man?" The King of Wei said, "There is no distinction."
After Dai Jinren went out, the King of Wei felt lost and disconsolate. After the guest left, Hui Shi came for an audience. The King of Wei said, "This guest is a great man (a person of supreme attainment); even sages are not his match." Hui Shi said, "When one blows a pitch-pipe, there is a resonant sound; when one blows through the tiny opening of a sword pommel, one produces nothing more than a faint hissing. Yao and Shun are what people praise, but speaking of Yao and Shun before Dai Jinren is just that faint hissing."
🌙 Confucius traveled to Chu and stayed at an inn in the village of Yiqiu. A neighbor—a husband and wife with their servants—climbed to the roof of their house. Zi Lu said, "What are those people gathered up there doing?" Confucius said, "These are the servants of a sage. This is a man who buries himself among the common people, who hides himself in the fields. His fame has already vanished, but his aspiration is boundless. Though his mouth speaks, his mind has never spoken. He stands opposed to the customs of the world, and in his heart he disdains to go along with them. This is a man who has sunk into the world (hidden in the marketplace and buried without recognition)—could it be Shi Nan Yiliao?" Zi Lu requested to go summon him.
Confucius said, "Forget it! He knows that I have taken note of him, and he knows that I have come to Chu. He will think that I must surely cause the King of Chu to summon him. He will regard me as a glib talker. If that is so, then as for one who disdains glib talkers, he feels ashamed merely to hear their voices—how much more so to see one face to face! Why would he stay around!" Zi Lu went to look, and the house was already empty.
🌾 Changwu Fengren asked Zi Lao, saying: "In the government of your affairs, do not be careless; in the management of the people, do not be rash (hasty and crude). Formerly, when I farmed, my tillage was careless, and the crops responded to me with careless growth; my weeding was rash, and the crops responded to me with rash results. The following year I changed my methods—I plowed deeply and sowed with care, and the crops grew lush and flourishing, so that I was fully fed all year round."
When Zhuangzi heard of this, he said: "Nowadays, when people cultivate their bodies and govern their hearts, most do so in the manner described by Fengren: they flee their innate nature, depart from their true inborn disposition, extinguish their genuine feelings, lose their spirit, and follow the crowd in acting as they do. Therefore, those who treat their nature carelessly will find that the weeds of desire and aversion take root in their nature, like reeds and rushes beginning to sprout, first lending support to our physical form, then gradually pulling out our true nature. Thus all manner of diseases break out at once, festering and discharging in every part: ulcers, scabs, eczema, internal heat, and nocturnal emissions—all occur in this way."
🌧 Bo Ju studied under Laozi and said, "Allow me to travel throughout the world." Laozi said, "Forget it! The world is the same everywhere." Bo Ju asked again, and Laozi said, "Where do you intend to begin?" Bo Ju said, "I will begin with the state of Qi." When he arrived at Qi, he saw a criminal exposed for public execution. Bo Ju pushed him, took off his court robe and covered the corpse with it, then wailed at heaven, saying: "You! You! The world has incurred a great calamity, and you alone have encountered it first. It says, 'Do not become a thief; do not kill people.' The notions of honor and disgrace have been established, and only then do people see what affliction is; goods and wealth have been accumulated, and only then do people see what contention is. Now making people afflicted with what they worry about, accumulating what people contend for, driving people into poverty with no rest—is it not impossible to end up nowhere near this? The rulers of antiquity attributed what they attained to the people and what they failed to attain to themselves; they attributed the right to the people and the wrong to themselves. Therefore, when a single person was harmed, they would retreat and reproach themselves. But it is not so today: they conceal the true nature of things to befuddle the common people, deliberately magnify every difficulty to punish those who dare not do what is asked, increase the burdens to punish those who cannot shoulder them, and lengthen the roads to punish those who cannot complete the journey. When the people's wisdom and strength are exhausted, they meet it with deception. Every day multitudes of falsehoods appear—how can the scholars and the common people help but be untrue? When strength is insufficient, there is fraud; when wisdom is insufficient, there is deceit; when resources are insufficient, there is theft. To whom should the blame for theft be attributed?"
🌱 Qu Boyu lived to be sixty years old, and through sixty years he was continuously transformed—never once was there a moment when what one initially regarded as right was not later regarded as wrong. Who knows whether what is now called "right" might not be what was called "wrong" at age fifty-nine? All living things have life, but none can see its root; all things have coming into being, but none can see its gateway. People all revere what their knowledge can encompass, yet do not understand that one can only have true knowing by relying on what knowledge cannot reach. Is this not the height of bewilderment? Enough! Enough! There is no one who can escape this. This is what is called "being thus."
📜 Confucius asked the Grand Historians Da Tao, Bo Changqian, and Xi Wei: "Duke Ling of Wei devoted himself to drinking and pleasure, paying no attention to governance; he hunted and fished, and would not participate in the alliances of the feudal lords. How did his posthumous title come to be 'Ling'?" Da Tao said: "It was for precisely that reason." Bo Changqian said: "Duke Ling had three wives, all bathing together in the same tub. When Shi Qiu entered bearing something, the Duke hastily received the gift and assisted him. Even though the Duke could be so negligent in other matters, he treated worthy men with such respect—that is why he came to be named 'Ling.'" Xi Wei said: "After Duke Ling died, divination was performed for burying him in the ancestral graveyard, and it was inauspicious; the oracle for burying him on Sand Hill was auspicious. When the diggers had gone down several ren, they discovered a stone coffin. Washing it off, they found an inscription on it that read: 'No need to rely on descendants; Duke Ling will take this for his dwelling place.' His being 'Ling' was long since predetermined! How could those two have comprehended anything of this?"
🏔 Shao Zhi asked Da Gong Diao: "What is meant by the Words of the Village (homely sayings of the hill country, metaphorically expressing a partial consensus)?" Da Gong Diao said: "The village is the formation of customs that unite ten surnames and a hundred names. It brings together what are different as one, and it parts asunder what are one into differences. Now, pointing to the hundred (i.e., innumerable) parts of a horse, one cannot find the horse; yet with the horse tethered before us, joining those hundred parts together we call it a horse. Therefore, a hill-mound piles up the low-lying bits of earth below to attain its height; rivers and streams bring together the flow of the waters to become vast; the great man unites all the myriad things to become impartial. Therefore, what comes in from outside, one holds an opinion without being stubborn; what goes out from within, one holds a right way without excluding what others bring. The four seasons have different weather, yet Heaven does not play favorites—and therefore the year is complete; the five officials have distinct duties, and the sovereign is not partial—and therefore the state is well governed; accomplishments and martial skills are diverse, and the great man is not biased—and therefore his virtuous character is perfect; the principles of all things are varied, and the Dao is not partisan—and therefore it is without name. Being without name means being without deliberate doing; being without deliberate doing means that nothing is left undone. Time has an end and a beginning; affairs have their transformations; fortune and misfortune alternate with each other; at times they twist and at times they coalesce, each in pursuit of its own direction; at times they tally and at times they diverge. It is like the great marsh, where the hundreds of forms of timber all find their uses; it is like the great mountain, where trees and rocks are alongside each other. This is what is called 'the words of the village.'"
Shao Zhi asked, "Then is it sufficient to call it the Dao?" Da Gong Diao said: "No." When we reckon the number of things, it surpasses ten thousand, yet we call them simply 'the ten-thousand things,' applying the number of the majority as a name. Heaven and Earth are the greatest of all forms; Yin and Yang are the greatest contained within the primal energy; the Dao is what is common to all of them. To call it 'great' in this sense is acceptable; but since the name is now fixed, how could it possibly be used for further comparisons? If one distinguished so, then the distinction between dog and horse—still, the difference is vast indeed."
Shao Zhi asked: among the Four Directions, within the Six-Reflections-expanse, the sixty he-goats of thatch inside that passage when that raft departs cut right across toward what calls forth. Wait. "The myriad phenomenon starting themselves present indeed. Their dawn." ??? Correction text clarity.

Duke Xiu of Gong represents the power of "transformation without words." He does not rely on cunning to manage relationships, nor does he use speech to persuade others; instead, he influences people through his very state of being. This is what it means to "refresh others with harmony"—benefiting people through a gentle demeanor rather than striving to win arguments or curry favor through words. The influence of a sage comes from the natural outpouring of De (virtue), not from the deliberate maneuvering of clever calculation. Yi Jie, "without virtue yet possessing cunning," uses cleverness to navigate among the wealthy and powerful, and the result is not helping people cultivate their virtue but helping them erode it—this is a powerful critique of intellectualism.
The Struggle on a Snail's Horn is the most famous fable in this chapter. King Wei of Wei flew into a rage over a single betrayal and prepared to launch a war, but Dai Jinren used the image of "two states on a snail's horn" to show him the absurdity of his perspective. Seen from the perspective of the infinite universe, what difference is there between the state of Wei, the city of Liang, King Wei himself, and the Man clans on a snail's horn? This is not the despair of nihilism but a shift in perspective: when we realize how small the things we cling to appear within a larger frame of reference, our anger and contention become laughable. Huizi said that to speak of Yao and Shun in front of Dai Jinren is merely a breath of wind across a sword's edge—this does not deny the value of Yao and Shun, but rather points out that before a higher level of existence, all praise of the human world seems insignificant.
The metaphor of Rough Farming and Hasty Weeding links governance to the nourishment of life. Elder Changwu's wisdom is simple: however you treat the crops, the crops will repay you accordingly. Zhuangzi extends this to: however you treat your own nature, your nature will repay you accordingly. When one treats one's nature roughly, supporting the body with the obstacles of desire and aversion, the result is various ailments. This is not a discussion of medicine but a warning about cultivating the mind—to turn against one's nature and pursue external things is to gradually destroy oneself.
Bo Ju Weeps for a Punished Man deepens this theme of social critique. When confronted with a disgraced man on public display, Bo Ju weeps for him and asks: who truly brought about this man's tragedy? The answer is society itself. When people establish honor and disgrace, hoard wealth, and drive others into endless destitution, crime becomes inevitable. The practice of ancient rulers was to "attribute success to the people and failure to themselves." Modern rulers, by contrast, hide the truth, deliberately create difficulties, and intensify punishments. Zhuangzi's critique here is extremely sharp: when theft occurs, who should be blamed? The person with no way out, or the society that creates such situations?
Qu Boyu's Transformation at Sixty reveals the relativity of "right" and "wrong." For sixty years, he negated himself every year compared to the previous one. What he considers right today—who knows whether it might be what at fifty-nine he considered wrong? This is not the self-dissolution of skepticism but a clear-eyed recognition of the limits of cognition. All things are born and arise, but no one can see their root or their door. People honor their own knowledge, not knowing that true wisdom lies in "relying on what one's knowledge does not know, and only then coming to know."
The dialogue between Shao Zhi and Da Gongdiao is the theoretical climax of this chapter. When Shao Zhi asks how "the words of the village" differ from the "Dao," Da Gongdiao's reply reveals the limitations of language and concepts. The words of the village are partial agreements; the Dao is the common origin of the ten thousand things. Calling the Dao "Dao" simply borrows a name, taking the notion of "greatness," and with that name comes limitation. When Shao Zhi asks where the ten thousand things come from, Da Gongdiao responds: yin and yang, the four seasons, desire and aversion, safety and danger, fortune and misfortune—these processes of change are the coming and going of the ten thousand things. Speech and wisdom can exhaustively understand "things," but cannot exhaustively understand the Dao. Toward the two theories of "non-action" (wu wei) and "something causes it" (huo shi), Da Gongdiao's stance is that both "do not escape the realm of things"—both are still circling within the realm of phenomena. One who truly sees the Dao does not pursue ultimate questions amid the arising and passing of things, but rests in the natural flow of the great Dao. The Dao transcends the opposition of speech and silence, and can only be touched in silent comprehension.
Zhuangzi's critique of "intellectualism" carries significance that transcends the ages. This is an era that deeply admires "cleverness," "connections," and "social skills." Yi Jie, "without virtue yet possessing cunning, using it to spirit his associations"—lacking inner cultivation yet possessing cleverness, using that cleverness to manage relationships—is an exact portrayal of today's workplace and social circles. We expend enormous effort building images, maintaining relationships, and calculating gains and losses, but Zhuangzi's warning is that such cleverness does not help cultivate people but helps erode them. True "connections" are not built through cleverness but naturally attracted through genuine virtue. Duke Xiu of Gong does nothing at all—only catching turtles in winter and resting in summer—yet the King of Chu wants to "wait upon Duke Xiu." Those who are truly influential do not rely on management.
The Struggle on a Snail's Horn is a perfect antidote to today's information anxiety. We scroll through our phones daily, follow the news, argue with others, and grow furious, anxious, and indignant about all sorts of trivialities. But pull the perspective far back—to the scale of the universe, to the scale of history—what difference is there between what keeps us awake at night and the war on a snail's horn? Zhuangzi is not asking people to become indifferent, but to liberate themselves from obsession. "Know how to let the mind roam in the infinite, and then return to find oneself in the midst of the grand world, as existing and yet as if not"—first let the mind roam in the infinite, then look back on your own situation, and that feeling of "as if existing, as if not" is precisely the capacity that modern people lack most. When Huizi says that speaking of Yao and Shun before Dai Jinren sounds like a breath of wind, today we might say: before the infinite, all trending topics, all live feeds, all status anxieties are as wind passing by the ear.
The warning of "rough farming of one's nature" is especially piercing for the exhaustion of the contemporary body-mind. We stay up late working, suppress emotions, pursue desires, stray far from nature. Zhuangzi's language: flee one's heaven-endowed nature, leave one's genuine self, annihilate one's genuine feelings, lose one's spirit. And the result? "Bursting with eruptions that leak everywhere, without choosing where to come out"—diseases break out from all directions. This is not a scare directed at the body but a questioning directed at our way of life: are we nourishing ourselves, or consuming ourselves? Elder Changwu's experience of cultivating crops—"deeply till the fields and carefully weed them; the grain grows bountifully and luxuriantly"—stands today as an insight about the rhythm of life: work deeply and meticulously, rather than roughly and hastily.
Bo Ju's probing question strikes at the heart of structural problems in society. "When strength is insufficient, one deceives; when wisdom is insufficient, one cheats; when wealth is insufficient, one steals."—when a person's basic needs are unmet, hypocrisy, deception, and theft become inevitable. This is a systemic problem of society, not a moral defect of individuals. Today's wealth gap, education anxiety, and workplace perversion are all nothing but modern renderings of "smearing people's suffering while gathering the causes of their contention." Zhuangzi's question, "When theft takes place, against whom can the blame justly be directed?"—who among us deserves the blame for acts of theft?—remains the most powerful question in social critique today. When making systems structurally generate despair, blaming individuals for moral failure is hypocrisy itself.
Qu Boyu's "Turning at Sixty" offers a rare kind of cognitive humility. In this era where everyone rushes to declare themselves, picks sides instantly, and seeks to prove themselves right, having the kind of who each year negates the previous year, as Qu Boyu did, requires extraordinary courage. True cognitive growth does not mean standing by what one believes, but having the courage to surrender each held explanation to transformation. Zhuangzi writes: "See humanness within the hub's hollow. Fast means continue wrong opinions. Care about what care doesn't stop daily. Its fruit while born. This child catches earlier after light changes bring only these small cries or laughter. As free as taking much with it without certainties final. Still . Ah yes includes same gates reach of open .." Wait continue lacking. — the true humility lies in knowing what you don't know. This counts for far more than any knowledge itself.
First, practice 'perspective shifting.' When tangled in rage, anxiety, or feeling wronged, try following Dai Jinren as he guided King Wei and pull the perspective back. That is not to negate your feelings but to place them in a larger geometry of horizon. How much of the "snail's horn" of what you cling to actually occupies within infinite time and space? This is nothing else than staying unhook-bound. Ask, amid every intensity, once grabbed by the emotions: "Return now into slime." From the viewpoint within the infinite, yes care the mood sometimes, going inside space deeper or drop shards or force tide current tune light :— Is this event to me within its soft view truly pressing?" Nearly automatically, this simple inquiry often so unexpectedly brings the tall fever and raging resentment quietly at once alight.
Second, stay alert against this default gravity toward clever-connivance. Contemporary society rewards people who always hack others, pulling all useful wires and "event-minded," to manage downsize logic instantly in . And yet—remember old Zhuang clearly then returns call fast says : "Turned this street instead use honesty," for the traffic next to them which quiet still present power greater is. The notion of the "Center of the Ring" is among the most profound philosophical contributions of the chapter. Ran Xiangshi "found the center of the ring and followed realization"—the ring; a circle; the center, its empty hub. Standing within the ring's center offers a view of every point around its entire orbit equally. From any point along the circle toward any other, opposites keep multiplying so fast old pair surfaces constantly backward—left half wants wrong has line chosen? Except silent right from inside but bright, set beside weight center top gate wide is sees shape equal gently know on rim saw fold it center rests neither is calm stronger holding differences without side no left no friction turn join ancient one returns finally trust. Against end reach any counter hit returns shift but while center remains instead for both. Having looked ahead every outside angle stay and observe again all visible grasp; parallel entire each center. This is the geometric metaphor of 'making all things equal.' Da Gongdiao states, "The Dao is not partial; thus it is without name." Any name makes position—an identity instantly around difference at press any piece aside daily almost rest world maybe; only form moves daily false statement and other names immediate cast everything if this out often calm distance the much comes soon if corner fail stay but always gathers air hand move has row any fixed color?
