Chapter 28 of 34
黄金策
The Six Qi govern celestial changes, with the alternation of cold and heat bringing omens of calamity and auspice; the Five Elements revolve in succession, leading to the prevalence of diseases such as smallpox, measles, sores, and boils 🌪. To inquire about safety and danger, one must rely on divination using the Yi hexagrams; first observe the prosperity or decline of the 'Use God', then investigate the movement or stillness of the 'Hate God' 📊. If receiving support, assistance, or harmonious combination, the pox and rashes will grow smoothly like a spiritual root 🌱; if encountering restraint, harm, punishment, or conflict, it is like flowers falling under jealous rain 🥀.
If the Parent Yao moves, it indicates that siblings receive protection, but offspring may not be favorable; if the Sibling Yao flourishes, it causes difficulties for wives and servants, but nephews and nieces happily encounter it 👨👩👧👦. The most auspicious is when the Officer Ghost is tranquil and the Use God is prosperous and strong; the most ominous is when the Officer Ghost is prosperous and strong and the Hate God moves ⚠️.
If the Use God is in the state of Eternal Life, there will be no worries for a hundred years; if the Original God approaches the place of Death and Extinction, harm will ultimately come beyond a month ⏳. A strong Officer Ghost makes the pox and rashes difficult to clear; prosperous Offspring make the rash sparse 🌸. The Tomb and Treasury are not suitable to approach the Use God; how can Resting and Imprisoned hold the World Line? Multiple appearances of the Officer Ghost in the hexagram require guarding against harmful 'thief pox' (malignant pox); gathering of the Offspring Yao in the lines necessitates caution against inviting calamity through excessive supplementation 💊.
Chaotic movement is not an auspicious sign; Hidden Repetition is also an ominous omen ❌. The appearance of the Offspring Yao means recovery without medication; the overlapping movement of the Parent Yao means difficulty in treatment even with extended medical care 🏥. Movement of the Wealth Yao in the hexagram is suitable for regulating the spleen and stomach; flourishing of the Sibling Yao within the image requires managing one's disposition 🍚. Greed for food and drink that increases worries is mostly due to helping the Officer harm the World; loving flavors and consuming food certainly stems from assisting the Blessing and nourishing the body 😋.
Encountering Six Conflicts in the hexagram makes it difficult to initiate and develop; encountering Six Harmonies in the lines indicates favorable completion 🔚. Stifled and not erupting are all due to the Use God being hidden and additionally injured; erupting but not forming pus is only because the Officer Ghost is empty and perishes, increasing restraint 🤒. If the Original God is damaged, its appearance is still inauspicious; if the Main Image is injured, receiving rescue and protection makes it unharmed 🛡.
If the Blessing God (Offspring) or Officer Ghost aligns with the Azure Dragon, then inoculation is appropriate; if the Use God or Killing God approaches the White Tiger, then slow the planting of flowers 🐉🐯. The Black Warrior conflicting with the World or Body Line causes changes due to defilement by women or nightmares; the White Tiger approaching the Officer or Use indicates severe fire toxin not yet cleared 🔥. The Tiger on the body must be discussed in terms of the Five Elements carrying illness; the Killing in the lines should be judged based on the Eight Trigrams for the entire life ⚖️.
Metal corresponds to the lungs, making increased pain and coughing unfavorable; Fire belongs to the Heart Meridian, making eruptions of sores and macules greatly忌讳 ❤️. The Wood Ghost indicates wind pathogen not expressed; the Water Palace indicates cold food still retained; pockmarked face with the Officer riding the Four Earths, broken position encountering Three Conflicts 🌫. The Black Warrior governs yin deficiency and dark shrinkage; the Hooked Array corresponds to distension, stuffiness, yellowing, and floating; the Coiled Snake Wood sways like convulsive wind; the Vermilion Bird Fire blazing indicates true blood heat 🌡.
The White Tiger together with the Hate God overlapping means cries are imminent; the Azure Dragon meeting with the Favor Star moving means congratulations forcefully arrive 🎉. Determine life and death within the mutual generation and restraint of the Five Elements; decide severity on the basis of the Six Divine Beings approaching and holding ⚔️. Offspring filling the eyes, yet the rash has not erupted, carries many worries; gold and jade filling the hall but lacking proper instruction wastes mental effort 💎.
The core of this chapter is predicting the auspiciousness or danger of pox and rashes (like smallpox) through divination using Yi hexagrams, emphasizing the influence of the mutual generation and restraint of the Five Elements and the Six Divine Beings (Azure Dragon, White Tiger, etc.). Key points include: the prosperity or decline of the Use God determines the progression of the illness; the movement or stillness of the Hate God brings risk; support, assistance, and harmonious combination are auspicious; restraint, harm, punishment, and conflict are ominous. Overall, it reflects the preventive medical thought combining ancient Chinese medicine and Yi studies, valuing the interaction between natural factors (Six Qi, Five Elements) and human health.
In a modern context, this can be understood as a kind of risk warning system: assessing disease trends through symbolic analysis (hexagram images). For example:
Viewed with scientific rationality, this is more ancient experiential summary than scientifically verified, but it reflects early systems thinking—viewing health as a result of Five Elements balance, sharing similarities with the modern holistic health concept.
Today, this kind of wisdom can be used for:
This chapter deeply explores the relationship between humans and nature: The Six Qi governing the heavens reflects the environmental impact on health, resonating with modern ecological medicine. The successive operation of the Five Elements symbolizes balance amidst change, reminding us that disease is part of the life process, requiring顺应自然规律 (e.g., seasonal changes). Simultaneously, it emphasizes causality and intervention: The relationships of generation and restraint are like chain reactions; rescue and protection (e.g., support) can change the outcome, similar to feedback regulation in modern systems theory. Philosophically, it advocates humility and reverence—humans should act cautiously in the face of natural forces, not control blindly.
