Chapter 30 of 34
Huang Jin Ce — Golden Strategies
If one is not a person of wealth and status, how can one simply enjoy glory and luxury? If one pursues fame and gain, it is inevitable to travel far and wide on the road 🌍. But a journey of a thousand miles—can it be completed in a single day or night? Who can foresee the fortune or misfortune encountered along the way? Yet regarding internal calamities and auspices, the spirits have their measure 🔮. The Parent Yao represents luggage 🧳; if afflicted by punishment or restriction, the luggage is prone to damage and becomes unusable. The Wife/Wealth Yao represents travel funds 💰; if flourishing and strong, the funds will be ample and sufficient. If the Self Yao is weak, it will be difficult to endure the hardships of exposure to wind and dew; if the Other Yao is empty/void, it will be hard to expect success in affairs or the fulfillment of plans. If the Intermediary Yao is tranquil, the journey back and forth will be peaceful 🛣️; if the Year Branch (Tai Sui) clashes or restricts, the entire year's movements and stops will be obstructed and chaotic.
If the Self Yao restricts the Other Yao, travel is favorable regardless of distance; if the Other Yao restricts the Self Yao, it is unfavorable for both public and private matters ❌. In the Eight Pure Hexagrams, if all lines are active, it is ominous wherever one goes; if both Intermediary Yao are empty/void, traveling alone is instead auspicious ✅. The Self Yao moving indicates the travel date is set, but if it transforms into an Official/Apparition Yao, it is like walking into a trap oneself; an Official/Apparition Yao in position makes one hesitant, but if it transforms into a Blessing Spirit (Offspring Yao), one can ultimately escape difficulties 🆓. A tranquil Yao encountering a clash from the Day Branch means one is certain to depart due to others; a moving Yao meeting combination with an Intermediary Yao means one is bound to stay due to companions 👥. If the Self Yao encounters emptiness/void, it is most favorable for those of the "Nine Streams" (e.g., merchants, performers) to travel; if an Earth Yao encounters a Blessing Spirit, it is especially suitable for land travel 🚗. The direction indicated by the Earthly Branch or tomb/reservoir of an Official/Apparition Yao should not be trodden upon; the direction of a Wealth Yao or Parent Yao, however, can be ascended upon ✅.
If an Official/Apparition Yao holds the Black Tortoise (Xuanwu) and is under punishment/restriction, beware of disturbances from thieves or robbers 👮; if a Brother Yao rides the White Tiger (Baihu) and is overlapping/repeated, guard against dangers from wind and waves 🌊. If a Wife/Wealth Yao comes to restrict the Self Yao, do not covet unrighteous wealth; if a Wealth Yao combines and transforms into an Official/Apparition Yao, do not indulge with an affectionate woman 💔. If the Parent Yao suffers from drenching wind and rain, boat travel is particularly to be avoided ⛵; if the Blessing Spirit (Offspring Yao) encounters harmony with companions, visiting noble persons is instead ominous 🚫. If in the Gen (Mountain) Palace, an Official/Apparition Yao sits on a Yin (Tiger) Yao, carefully guard against tigers and wolves (dangers); if in the hexagram a Brother Yao meets the Coiled Snake (Tengshe), beware of tricksters or swindlers 🕵️. If an Official/Apparition Yao moves in the Intermediary Yao, there is discord with companions; if a Brother Yao is strong on the Self Yao, travel funds will be spent excessively 💸. Only if a hexagram lacks Official/Apparition Yao or baleful spirits can all matters go as one wishes; if the hexagram lines show no Blessing Spirit, how can one be content? If the Master Yao moves and encounters emptiness/void, one will return halfway; if the Wealth energy is strong and approaches the Month Branch, one can return fully laden 🎯. As long as one can pursue good fortune and avoid calamity, why worry about climbing heights or wading through dangers?
The core of this text is using Six Yao Divination to predict the fortune or misfortune of travel. It emphasizes analyzing factors like luggage, travel funds, companions, and direction through elements in the hexagram such as the Self Yao, Other Yao, Parent Yao, Wife/Wealth Yao, and Official/Apparition Yao. Essentially, it is the ancients' systematic assessment of travel risks based on Yijing logic, aimed at helping people avoid dangers in advance and seize opportunities.
In a modern context, this can be understood as a kind of travel risk assessment model. For example:
Practical advice: Before traveling, one can use this framework for rational analysis but should combine it with real-world information (like weather forecasts, travel guides) rather than blindly relying on divination. Divination conclusions can be transformed into an action checklist, for example:
This reflects the ancient Chinese philosophy of "unity of heaven and humanity": travel is not merely physical movement but an interaction with the energies of time and space. It emphasizes active pursuit and avoidance rather than passive acceptance, encouraging people to find balance within natural and social constraints. Modern extension: Life's journey is full of variables; through self-reflection (Self Yao) and external insight (Other Yao), we can better navigate life, embodying the wisdom of "knowing fate without submitting to it."
