星学大成
We, your ministers, respectfully submit: Xing Xue Da Cheng (The Great Compendium of Astrology), in thirty volumes, was compiled by Wan Minying of the Ming Dynasty. Minying, styled Yu Wu, was a native of Daning Dusi. He was a jinshi (metropolitan graduate) in the gengxu year of the Jiajing reign (1550), and successively served as Censor of the Henan Circuit, and was later posted as Right Assistant Administration Commissioner of Fujian. This work gathers the writings of earlier astrologers, arranges them in order, and intersperses annotations and critical comments. The first volume presents diagrams and examples of astral bodies; the second covers essential observations on stargazing and the twelve positional categories of palace-degree mastery; the third presents various schools' methods for determining life limits and the Qintang system of vacuity and substance; the fourth contains the secret methods of the Yelü clan; volumes five through seven include Xiancheng Wangdou (The City of Immortals Gazing at the Dipper) and Sanchen Tongzai (Comprehensive Records of the Three Luminaries); the eighth volume collects the treasured archives of the Purple Mansion and miscellaneous astrological writings; the ninth contains the Biyu Zhenjing (Jade Bi Jade True Scripture) and the writings of Deng and Qiao; and the tenth presents Guangyu Yuanwei (Profound Subtleties of Radiant Light) and the patterns of stellar configurations. With regard to the ancient methods of the astrologers, nothing is omitted, however fine or extensive—it may truly be called a great and complete work. From antiquity, among those who have spoken on the arts of numerology, only Zhang Shichun's words—“some methods prove effective and some do not; what is effective proceeds from what human wisdom can discern, and what is ineffective lies in the mysterious workings of Heaven”—are most apt and balanced. Yet practitioners insist that everything must prove effective, and therefore multiply their approaches to measure it; but the more approaches they proliferate, the less they can achieve accuracy. What is most difficult to believe, above all, is the theory of "Qiaomiao." This theory holds that Fire and Earth, being opposites, nevertheless complement each other—Day-Fire in the mansions of Can, Zhen, Ji, and Bi is deemed harmless and greatly auspicious, while Night-Earth in Jiao, Dou, Jing, and Kui confers blessings likewise. But this fails to recognize that the principle of the Five Phases only concerns generation and conquest: for instance, when seasonal Earth sits over withered Wood, it naturally borrows the latter's dredging and penetration; when thriving Fire approaches the flowing of gentle waters, it conversely delights in their nourishing benefit. But if Winter-Fire sits in the watery mansions, or Spring-Earth occupies the Wood position—how can these be regarded as Qiaomiao and determined auspicious? Moreover, when Earth predominates, Wood has already been buried and immersed; when Fire blazes, Water already fears desiccation—benefit to one means harm to the other. Such is the quirk of seeking marvels and demanding effects without reckoning the reasoning of Five Phase generation and conquest. In such matters, Minying for the most part follows inherited traditions and fails to refute their errors. Additionally, because the degrees of the five wandering stars have shifted with precession since antiquity, it is also difficult to guarantee their complete correspondence with the present. Nevertheless, his gathering of various theories preserves numerous texts not transmitted within the practitioner tradition, and truly constitutes a comprehensive treasury of the five-star system, standing alongside San Ming Tong Hui (on the Zi-Ping method) without conflict. Later students of the Lao-Guo method, in their comparative examinations, will necessarily draw upon this work as their resource. The "Treatise on Arts and Letters" in the History of the Ming and Huang Yuji's Qi Wan Tang Bibliography both attribute this work to Lu Wei, while separately listing Wan Minying's San Ming Tong Hui in twelve volumes. On examining the preface and general principles in this edition, it is definitively authored by Minying. The "Treatise on Arts and Letters" inherits Huang's error; hence we still record it under Minying's name.
Respectfully submitted for collation in the fifth month of the forty-sixth year of the Qianlong reign (1781).
In antiquity, the sages, being enlightened regarding the Way of Heaven and observant of the people's conditions, accordingly commanded the officials of the astronomical bureau to create the Jiheng (armillary instruments), in order to regulate the Seven Governors (Sun, Moon, and Five Planets), and thereby calendrical methods first came into being. Their broader purpose was nothing more than "reverently according with the vast Heaven, and respectfully bestowing the seasons upon the people." Thereafter, this devolved into the arts of calculation and divination. When Pi Zao, Gan De, Tang Mei, Yin Gao, Shi Shen and their kind successively appeared, observing astral emanations and investigating auspicious and inauspicious signs to amend human affairs, the doctrine of fate-and-emolument (life-mandate) systems was not yet spoken of. Only Lü Cai of the early Tang, in one discourse, first touched upon it—yet he deeply doubted and did not dare to credit it. Through the Five Dynasties, Song, and Yuan, the theory gradually flourished, and gentry and scholars came increasingly to accept it. Hence Su Zizhan (Su Shi) had the saying, "Tuìzhi's (Han Yu's) fate lies in the Wei and Ji mansions; my own fate likewise lies in Malakāt (Capricornus)." Now, given the loftiness of celestial phenomena and the profound distance of the Heavenly Way, every variation among the stars suffices to portend fortune or calamity and lay the groundwork of order or chaos—near at hand in years or months, farther off extending decades beyond; none failed to prove true. How much more, then, when a human being receives the vital breath of Heaven, Earth, and the Five Phases at birth—at the moment of that initial birth, the hosts of luminaries vary above and coincide with the occasion, while human affairs pulse below in sympathetic resonance with Heaven—this likewise accords with the inherent signs of principle and number. For example, in the flourishing of the Song dynasty's virtue, the Five Planets gathered in Qu, worthies emerged one after another, and letters and the moral order of the age were thereby transformed on a grand scale. Is not the teaching of the astrologers thereby clearly evidenced? It may be discussed generally thus: Heaven's transformations operate in and through qi (vital force) while holding firm in li (principle); qi may be pure or turbid, but li is single and undivided. "Fate" is spoken of in taking li and qi together. Confucius, in composing the Spring and Autumn Annals, recorded anomalies and portents, yet did not commit matching responses to writing—heaven's Way and fate are not spoken; and even when spoken, not made explicit—in all cases, desiring that people regulate qi by li, rest content in the ordinary, and wait upon fate. I am not one who knows Heaven, yet in the doctrines of stellar fate I have devoted careful study and inquiry, and have fairly grasped their essentials and subtleties. Grieved that the specialists of the age do not understand the principles governing Heaven and humankind, and recklessly proclaim fortune and misfortune to delude the world, I have accordingly taken up such works as the Sanchen Tongzai, Wuxing Zonggui, Wangdou, Dianjia, Yelü, Qiaoaozhe, Xushi [vacuity and substance], together with un-transmitted secrets treasured in my family's collection. I have deleted the redundant, corrected the erroneous and misleading; where I held views the ancients had not yet expressed, or where old explanations no longer stand, I have classified by order, investigated with commentary, and assembled the whole into a complete work of [thirty] volumes, titled Xing Xue Da Cheng — to broadly transmit this art, and to assist our sage Emperor's policy of revering Heaven and bestowing the seasons. Such is my intent. Should someone object that the circulation of this book will cause the gentleman to rely upon fate and neglect good deeds, and the petty man to rely upon fate and presume to commit evil—would this not be impermissible? Alas! The Book of Changes treats of yin and yang; it is a work of divination. The sages created it to teach people to approach the auspicious and avoid the inauspicious, and comprised this in a single sentence: "All the movements under Heaven are rectified in the One." If we say that the auspicious is what we approach—it is not the "auspicious" itself that we approach, but the principle by which good fortune is obtained; this includes such actions as "reviewing one's footfalls and examining one's omens." As for the inauspicious which we avoid—it is not the inauspicious itself that we avoid, but the causes by which misfortune is induced; this includes such rectifications as "return to the mandate, transform, and abide in stability." Being thus, good fortune is not a mere seeking; being thus, misfortune is something unshunnable. The sixty-four hexagrams and three hundred eighty-four lines all amount to no other principle. Verily, the sages' obscure support of spiritual intelligence and opening of things and completing of tasks carries the same essential intent—and my own heart is like this. So why should this not be permitted? For the circulation of this book will enable those who understand fate to contemplate it: encountering wealth and honor, they shall say, "It is fate; nay, that state must not be pursued recklessly"; encountering poverty and lowliness, they shall say, "It is fate; nay, that state must not be casually evaded." Abiding in one's path as fate arrives, without duplicity in encounter with death or longevity, gathering them into unity whether loss or gain, whether life or death—does not this teaching hold abundant good? But if a man, expecting fate to incline toward fulfillment, staggers recklessly along straight paths, or, seeing that fate will lessen prospects, seeks to dodge each liability on a narrow escape—then one shall die shackled and fettered, or stand beneath a toppling rubble wall. How is that different from self-destruction? Against such a man, even the sages could do nothing. Would I countenance this? Would I countenance this? Thus is the preface.
Written on the first day of the tenth month of the guihai year, the forty-second year of the Jiajing reign (1563), by Wan Minying of Yishui, respectfully.
The doctrine of astral fate has numerous diverging strands on how to organize. In assessing the astral bodies, there are distinctions of Miao, Le, Yuan, Dian, Chi, Liu, Fu, Ni (in dignity, delight, palatium, hall, slow [in motion], lingering, retrograde, docile/opposing, etc.)—as well as transformative and non-transformative presentations. In selecting functional spirits and correlates, there are the four-correlated judgments of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches signifying auspicious and inauspicious, and gradations in use and disuse—varying even when the same in principle. In tracing the source from the branches of this river, you cannot pass through without holding [the unbroken thread]. Looking into a subject with many streams at many times, you exhaust deeply when you mention the concepts, because one consistent principle embeds everything.
He who observes the stars and follows planetary causes without first illumining the reasons of all stellar bodies and funereal-badge-spirits—such a one, full of full understanding, yet all as blind as the ones deciding; such a one who, mouth wide over copies of Classics whole and yet bound in chained leaves, with mazy eyes takes first step afield, will meet as though caught—in stark void of any map. Who might expect single-corporation mastery? Rather over generations numerous astrology-collections have failed exhaust reasoning. Cannot reconcile and interlink (the thoughts) purely inside one course to reveal the maze—universal masters wager wholly on prior stars? To those skills add one at issue: that, opening all handings-of-its-vogue around palace-use temples known to every patroller too worn again separately therein on entries cut-away far readings, that single-capture echo drown spells lack no such for ground as keylessness of 'not.' You take them forward. Our readings in various instances many-jacket classics only to stack snippets; heaven grant place thereafter more school as there gathered evidence; and assembled therein already against trace's gnarled self along double marks whole histories a need haunts, three star-norms and critical stations, etc.,
Thereupon, I take the official-calendar diagrams of the stars and the scattered references in various schools and, whereby able precisely-all informed on them of every reason governed with content upon titles entire, thereby settle in the manner of preliminary “guiding-antics”, three juan: the first fixes in rank success/fission-span un-number mixing of arbitrary aspects; the fuses-still mind the center sets the upper-bound on cosmic-gazing gauges-from p or matters needs no steady; vellum shoat thesis such final one falls center into ever-gorged a degree another was middle-order indeed blanker middle-neck extra to be sure against read through fall' un-positioned and "ranking shifts overall one both strongest, -self cases family list tables differing life-limit yard sample from a key generation into and notes due each; two sections lay initial both beyond a period by present at height inter-supplement with issues p/cross-functions 'Of of Q,' that third axis actually three a as internal optional base clear aside flow rest. Sole apart mine explicit likewise be added gradually my "Appendix Questions (There Arise as Howze )" – these give each answering base for fitting hems until whole in measured. I have centered effort and small every end with bounds those conjunctions framed extra stellar to preserve. Vague everywhere.
In these prefaces, Wan Minying establishes the theoretical foundation for the entire Xing Xue Da Cheng. Several core ideas run through the work consistently:
Governing Qi by Principle (Yi Li Yu Qi): The operation of Heaven’s Way involves both "qi" (vital force) and "li" (principle). Qi may be pure or mixed, but principle is singular and unchanging. The fundamental task of the numerology/fate doctrine is not to bow blindly to qi, but to direct qi through understanding li. 🌬️ This is Wan Minying’s original point of departure in defining the ethics of astrological fatalism.
Astral Fate Is Both Effective and Ineffective: Citing Zhang Shichun, he admits that the arts of observing astral fates “have had proven instances and proven failures.” What is validated legitimately falls within the realm graspable by human reason; what fails does so because an obscure subtlety of Heaven's Way has not yet been fathomed. This self-limiting rational attitude distinguishes the Xing Xue Da Cheng from the bluster of ordinary charlatan practitioners.

From Astronomical Observation to the System of Fate Determination
Wan's own preface clearly traces the progression from astronomy (the armillary Jiheng and the Seven Governors) to astrology (observing stellar emanations and auspicious signs) and finally to the art of life-cusp determinism based on planetary fate. In early Tang, Lü Cai touched the subject with skeptical reservation, and only in the Five Dynasties–Song–Yuan periods did it gradually gain ascendancy—Su Shi’s “Capricorn” remark testifies to literati-acceptance. This evolution reflects a major transition in Chinese configurations of knowledge from matters considered clearly public-significant (such as state sacrifices and agricultural timekeeping) toward how individuals applied these frameworks to give meaning through constellations—sign also once heavens communicated overwhelmingly the communal ritual landscape simultaneously as template accommodating a shaping global introspection across people/ space model framework.

We, your ministers, respectfully submit: Xing Xue Da Cheng (The Great Compendium of Astrology), in thirty volumes, was compiled by Wan Minying of the Ming Dynasty. Minying, styled Yuwu, was a native of Daning Dusi. He was a jinshi (metropolitan graduate) in the gengxu year of the Jiajing reign (1550), and successively served as Investigating Censor of the Henan Circuit, and was later posted as Right Assistant Administration Commissioner of Fujian. This work gathers the writings of earlier astrologers, arranges them in order, and intersperses annotations and critical comments. The first volume presents diagrams and examples of astral bodies; the second covers essential compendia on stargazing and the twelve positional categories of palace-degree mastery; the third presents various schools' methods for determining life limits and the Qintang system of vacuity and substance; the fourth contains the secret methods of the Yelü clan; volumes five through seven include Xiancheng Wangdou (The City of Immortals Gazing at the Dipper) and Sanchen Tongzai (Comprehensive Records of the Three Luminaries); the eighth volume collects the treasured archives of the Purple Mansion and miscellaneous astrological writings; the ninth contains the Biyu Zhenjing (Jade Bi Jade True Scripture) and the writings of Deng and Qiao; and the tenth presents Guangyu Yuanwei (Profound Subtleties of Radiant Light) and the patterns of stellar configurations. What is most difficult to believe, above all, is the theory of "Qiaomiao" (the paradoxical exaltation). This theory holds that Fire and Earth, being opposites, nevertheless complement each other—Day-Fire in the mansions of Can, Zhen, Ji, and Bi is deemed harmless and greatly auspicious, while Night-Earth in Jiao, Dou, Jing, and Kui confers blessings likewise.
Their broader purpose was nothing more than "reverently according with the vast Heaven, and respectfully bestowing the seasons upon the people." Thereafter, this devolved into the arts of calculation and prognostication. When Pi Zao, Gan De, Tang Mei, Yin Gao, Shi Shen and their kind successively appeared, observing astral emanations and investigating auspicious and inauspicious signs to mend human affairs, the doctrine of fate-and-emolument (life-mandate systems) was not yet spoken of. Only Lü Cai of the early Tang, in one discourse, first touched upon it—yet he deeply doubted and did not dare to credit it. Through the Five Dynasties, Song, and Yuan, the theory gradually flourished, and gentry and scholars came increasingly to accept it. Hence Su Zizhan (Su Shi) had the saying, "Tuizhi's fate lies in the Wei and Ji mansions; my own fate likewise lies in the Moji (Capricorn) palace." Now, given the loftiness of celestial phenomena and the profound distance of the Heavenly Way, every variation among the stars suffices to portend fortune or calamity and lay the groundwork of order or chaos—near at hand in years or months, farther off extending decades beyond; none failed to prove true. For example, in the flourishing of the Song dynasty's virtue, the Five Planets gathered in the Kui mansion, worthies emerged one after another, and literature and the moral order of the age were thereby transformed on a grand scale. Is not the teaching of the astrologers thereby clearly evidenced? It may be discussed generally thus: Heaven's transformations operate through qi (vital force) while holding firm in li (principle); qi may be pure or turbid, but li is single and undivided. "Fate" is spoken of in taking li and qi together. Confucius, in composing the Spring and Autumn Annals, recorded anomalies and portents, yet did not commit matching responses to writing—the Way of Heaven and fate are not spoken; and even when spoken, not made explicit—in all cases, desiring that people regulate qi by li, rest content in the ordinary, and wait upon fate. I am not one who knows Heaven, yet in the doctrines of stellar fate I have devoted careful study and inquiry, and have fairly grasped their essentials and subtleties. Grieved that the specialists of the age do not understand the principles governing Heaven and humankind, and recklessly proclaim fortune and misfortune to delude the world, I have accordingly taken up such works as the Sanchen Tongzai, Wuxing Zonggui, Wangdou, Dianjia, Yelü, Qiao'ao, Xushi [vacuity and substance], together with un-transmitted secrets treasured among my family's collection. I have deleted the redundant, corrected the erroneous and misleading; where I held views the ancients had not yet expressed, or where old explanations no longer stand, I have classified by order, investigated with commentary, and assembled the whole into a complete work of [thirty] volumes, titled Xing Xue Da Cheng — to broadly transmit this art, and to assist our sage Emperor's policy of revering Heaven and bestowing the seasons upon the people. Such is my intent. Should someone argue that the circulation of this book will cause the gentleman to rely upon fate and neglect good deeds, and the petty man to rely upon fate and presume to commit evil—would this not be impermissible? Alas! The Book of Changes treats of yin and yang; it is a work of divination. The sages created it to teach people to approach the auspicious and avoid the inauspicious, and comprised this in a single sentence: "All the movements under Heaven are rectified in the One." If we say that the auspicious is what we approach—it is not the "auspicious" itself that we approach, but the principle by which good fortune is obtained; this includes such things as inspecting one's conduct and examining one's omens. As for the inauspicious which we avoid—we do not avoid the inauspicious itself, but the causes (the <areasons)> by which misfortune is induced; this includes such rectifications as "returning to the mandate and changing to abide in firm correctness." Being thus, good fortune is nought we presumptuously seek; being thus, misfortune is nought we stintingly flee. The sixty-four hexagrams and three hundred and eighty-four lines amount to no other principle. Verily, the sages, in secretly assisting spiritual intelligence, in opening up things and completing affairs, possessed this same essential intent—and my own heart is likewise. So why should this not be permissible? For the circulation of this book will enable those who understand fate to contemplate it: encountering wealth and honor, they shall say, "It is fate; it must not be pursued as a stroke of luck"; encountering poverty and lowliness, they shall say, "It is fate; it must not be meanly evaded." Abiding in the law of right conduct as fate arrives, drawing no distinction between early death and long life, holding gain and loss as one, and life and death as one—does not this teaching hold abundant benefit? But if a man, confident that fate will soon prosper, blindly plunges along tangents, or seeing that fate will decline, seeks to dodge it and grasp at dodges for safe escape—then one shall die in shackles, what says the saint? One would simply be like one standing beneath a crumbling wall. Even the sagely and worthy could do nothing for such a one. Would this be something I understand? Would this be something I understand? Thus is the preface.
Written on the first day of the tenth month of the guihai year, the forty-second year of the Jiajing reign (1563), by Wan Minying of Yishui, respectfully.
The doctrine of stellar fate has numerous ramifying threads. For instance, in assessing the astral bodies, distinctions arise among Miao (exaltation), Le (delight), Yuan (enclosure/palace), Dian (hall), Chi (slow), Liu (lingering), Fu (hidden), Ni (retrograde), and whether they are changing or unchanging. In taking up functional spirits and the calculation cycles (Shen Sha), there are judgments by Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches foregrounding auspiciousness or inauspiciousness, excellence or ill—differing according as they are "used" or "not used." Tracing back these streams while fixing principles according to deeper veins, everywhere can be tasted a thread of fully coherent causal ground located behind each and every star corpus, exemplifying models beyond dispute. He who would observe star-portents gate-keep them only as vague categories without first fathoming the 'why' persisting behind the host of guiding structures in their display would undertake to weave through many recensions all previous books' pronounce, wanting those further lucid judgments elsewhere—one would be met by chains ratterled upon beyond number. It grieves a practiced eye.
Now if we look into the collections of notable syncretic fortune-plotters among these literatures, few have demonstrated the enough scholarship unified all principles right model comprehensively for our purpose where each earlier branch might withhold some significance and each scribe with vital links to olden complete copies known by re known others: some will lay them simple false her of concept transmuted matter obscured not by exact reason; others transmitted astrological names suppressing their actual validity within the single thread is clear principle, either subtle for readers though elsewhere in the chapters you often wander without land, entering your presence reader at loss: including absence absent an overarching accurate inventory can fall all around you intact elsewhere include instead unclear tables produce easily equally other missing relations and doubles.
